Eating Thai Vegetarian Food at Pun Pun Restaurant at Wat Suan Dok in Chiang Mai, Thailand
At the recommendation of a friend, we visited Wat Suan Dok in Chiang Mai, Thailand to eat Thai vegetarian food at Pun Pun Restaurant (formerly and briefly known as Imm Aim) just outside of the Thai Buddhist temple grounds. With an open air kitchen and self serve drinking water, we appreciated the simple decor and minimalist design. The menu featured an array of vegetarian options (all very well priced) including Thai favorites, gourmand salads and International curries. The hardest part for us was settling on a course of main dishes to sample. We ended up going with deep-fried spring rolls, mixed salad with cheese and a spicy coconut Indian curry with roti.

The spring rolls were the best we've had in Chiang Mai. Loaded with vegetables and spices they were done to perfection.
The mixed salad was a mountain full of various vegetables, beans and chunks of cheese. Again, this was pleasing to the palette.
Finally, the spicy Indian curry was made with a coconut base and had large chunks of assorted vegetables that we sopped up with wedges of roti flat bread.
Although we were stuffed we decided to order dessert: bananas in coconut milk pudding and honey ginger tea with wedges of sweet potato.
In total we paid 300 Baht (slight less than $10 USD) for two coconut shakes, three main dishes and two desserts. This was easily one of the best value Thai meals we've had since coming back to Chiang Mai.
My only regret is that we're leaving soon and that we may not have a chance to come back before we head on a slow boat bound for Luang Prabang, Laos.
Today we are at Wat Suan Dok and we hear there is an amazing restaurant on the temple grounds. It is called Imm Aim and it used to be called Pun Pun, so that is what we're searching for right now.
It is a vegetarian restaurant and it has come highly recommended from a friend but before we go have lunch we're going to go for a wander around the temple.
So far I'm kind of enjoying the minimal design here and they have a really cool outdoor open kitchen. You can see them preparing your food.
The do it yourself water reminds me a lot of being back in Korea where we used to eat at the Kimbap restaurants and we would go up and grab our own waters.
Our first dish has arrived - the vegetarian spring rolls. It is hot. I'm burning my mouth but this is really good. These are definitely some of the best spring rolls I've had here in Chiang Mai. Have a look inside. It has bean sprouts, glass noodles, some vegetables. It is really flavorful. They've added some nice spices in there.
There comes the rest of our food. It looks amazing. Let's get back to your spring roll. I got distracted there. Have a bite! Yeah, these are excellent. My favorite part about this is the tamarind dipping sauce.
This is a really healthy salad. If you look over here you can see we have some green beans, red beans, corn and there is even some barley and of course we love cheese so we had to get some feta cheese on top. Only an extra 20 Baht. I would say it was well worth it. Oh, yes. How is it? That's wonderful. So good you've have three bites and I haven't had any.
That would be our dessert. This was listed as sweet potato honey. Sweet potato tea on the menu, so I was expecting a tea cup but apparently it is a dessert. Tea in a spoon. It tastes like ginger. That is ginger tea. That is not sweet potato.
This is my dessert which I'm kindly sharing with Sam. Oh, yeah, I don't recall that part of the deal. Anyways, we're having bananas with coconut milk and if you look down here you can see giant slabs of banana. I'm going to take one of those and make sure I've got lots of coconut milk too.
That is the face of satisfaction. Yeah?
That awesome feast came to 300 Baht which is 10 USD and that included two shakes, three main dishes and two desserts. That is a lot of food for ten dollars for two people.

Wat Suan Dok
Wat Suan Dok (Thai: วัดสวนดอก, which roughly translates as flower garden temple) is a Buddhist temple (Wat) in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. It is a Royal Temple of the Third Class. The temple is on Suthep Road, approximately one kilometre west of Suan Dok gate at the west side of the moat.

The Wat Suan Dok lies a little outside Chiang Mai was constructed in 1373. While not architecturally as significant as some of the other temples that Thailand has to offer, it has a very strong photogenic element which photographers find hard to ignore.

I take myself to a 2 day silent meditation retreat in the hope to get back into some positive habits along with that inner peace..
Wat Suan Dok in Chiang Mai runs the retreat every Tuesday to Wednesday and aims to introduce foreigners to Buddhism and meditation. It also give s the monks an opportunity to practice their english skills.
It's a relatively gentle course that is good for people who are interested in meditation but perhaps haven't had much experience. This is my Third time here and I'm treating it like a refresher to get me back into good habits.
Just rock up at the temple before 1pm and sign up. It costs 500THB plus 150THB a piece for white shirt and pants. You will need a photocopy of your passport which you can do just around the corner for 1THB.
The whole course is ran by the monks at the temple.

Wat Suan Dok is one of the oldest temples in Chiang Mai. This temple has been established for 700 years.
Wat Suan Dok (Flower Garden Temple) is in the west of old Chiang Mai. Its just off the airport road. There are dozens and dozens of small white chedi, about three meters (10 feet) to six meters (20 feet) high. These house the ashes of many of the Chiang Mai Royal Family but the largest one, just to the south, is a Buddhist relic chedi.
The Viharn (main temple builing) is enormous, the largest in Chiang Mai, it is not very colourful, having a grey tiled roof, though the pillars and eaves are highly decorated and hung with trembling wind bells. The altar displays Buddha images of various sizes with a large sitting Buddha facing and a tall standing Buddha image behind.
The bot (church) has an orange-tiled roof and is famous among Thais for housing the Phra Chao Kao Tu Buddha image, a very large bronze image cast in the 16th century.

Wat Suan Dok Temple
This temple originally lay in a fortified square beyond Chiang Mai walls. Legends tell that King Ku Na invited the venerable Sumana Thera, a very pious monk from Sukhothai to bring the Buddhism of Sri Lanka to Chiang Mai.
The King offered him the royal flower garden (Suan Dok) as a place to build a temple. The temple was established in 1371.
When Sumana Thera was living in Sukhothai, he had a vision which showed him where to find a very holy relic that had long been buried near the city. When the relic was unearthed, miraculous illuminations took place confirming its power. These miracles did not repeat themselves for the King of Sukhothai, who left the relic in the care of the monk.
Thus when King Ku Na invited Sumana Thera to Chiang Mai, the monk brought the holy relic with him. When the relic was about to be enshrined at the temple, he found that the relic had split into two pieces. One of these pieces was kept at Wat Suan Dok, and the other was buried at Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep.
The main viharn was rebuilt in the early 1930's by Khru Ba Srivichai. A large Buddha image with a hand in the position for holding straw stands back to back with the main seated image. The images took on their present shape under Khru Ba Srivichai.
A smaller viharn to the south contains a seated Buddha image - the Phra Chao Kao Tue - cast by King Muang Kaew in 1504. The Lanna style image stands 4.7 meters tall and is made up of nine pieces. The walls of the viharn are decorated with murals showing the previous lives of the Buddha (the Vessantara Jataka may be seen on the upper level of the north wall).
West of the main viharn numerous chedi contain the remains of the royal family of Chiang Mai. These were collected from different sites in Chiang Mai and placed there at the wish of Princess Dararatsmi in 1909. The compound also contains the northern campus of the Maha Chulalongkorn Buddhist University of the Mahanikai sect. A wall with tall ornamental gates surrounds the compound, and the remains of earthen walls that once surrounded the fortified monastery can still be seen on the opposite side of the road.

Wat Suan Dok was founded by King Kue Na of Lanna for the monk Sumana Thera in the year 1370 CE.The temple was erected in the center of Wiang Suan Dok, a walled settlement of the Lawa people, which were in this land even before the Three Kings founded Chiang Mai as a city.The outlines of the fortifications can clearly be seen on satellite images, and the remainings of some of the earthen walls can still be seen from the north of Suthep road.King Kue Na’s flower garden which was located in this temple, lent the temple its original name: “Wat Buppharam Dok Mai” or “Wat Suan Dok Mai” for short. When the moment arrived for the relic to be housed in the newly built temple, it duplicated itself by art of magic.One of the relics was housed, as originally intended, in a shrine inside Wat Buppharam Dok Mai, while the other relic was put on the back of a white elephant that was sent to climb Doi Suthep, which is the mountain located directly west of Chiang Mai, where it trumpeted three times and then proceeded to die. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep was built on that spot to safeguard the second relic, also serving as a sign of respect for the elephant. On Day 10 of our adventure in Thailand we visited Wat Suan Dok, a temple in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. This video is of a presentation given by one of the monks from a monastery 2 1/2 hours away. It is a wonderful description of what it is like to be Buddhist monk since his childhood. Willie discovered that we mis-spelled Moneastery in the video - please overlook that error!
