Mari talks to Tan Dhammavidu, one of the most respected foreign monks in Thailand
I just felt the need to do something I'd never done before. And it was strong enough to change my life completely” Dhammavidu
Right after I finished my last 6 day silence retreat in Dipabhavan Meditation Center in Koh Samui island, Thailand, in October 2016, I got to talk with T. Dhammavidu and T. Cithapon, two of their monks. I filmed the video it with my cell phone so can see that through my youtube channel. Or you can just enjoy the audio through my “Exciting Careers Podcast” while you workout at the gym or commute to work ????
Dhammavidu (which means revealer of Dharma) is one of the most experienced foreign monks in Thailand, originally from England. He tells us how he became a monk “by accident”, how the digital world is already challenging the monks, the reasons why they have to give up most of their excitements in life such as playing music, having sex, eating yummy food and so forth, the difference between meditating in India and in Thailand, and the difference the western impact has made in the life and customs of Thailand in general.
For 23 years he has given the Meditation and Dharma instruction at Suan Mokkh International Dharma Hermitage, the famous meditation centre in Surat Thani, Southern Thailand. Presently he is providing the same service at Dipabhāvan Meditation Center.
I hope this conversation inspires you to start doing meditation and going to silence retreats because this has really changed my life in ways I can’t even describe. Basically, it took me almost 40 years to discover I had no idea how to breathe and how I could use that for developing my mental control and consequently for discovering who I really am.
Show Notes:
2:17 How monks names, like “Dhammavidu”, are given
4:31 How monks relate with new technology as smartphones

Significant quotes:
I just felt the need to do something I'd never done before. And it was strong enough to change my life completely 30:16
I was lucky. I made a lot of mistakes, but eventually wandered to the right place 33:41
Nice people not necessarily make good monks 22:59
Lack of mindfullness in things is always a shortcome 20:54
If look on the Internet, and make a study of it, you'll find there's a lot of stuff that are not very useful, and creates bad state of mind on people 16:35
Internet and Modern Society tend to make people very narrow 18:27
It happened by accident. Everything in my life does 24:07
The idea with Buddhism is to avoid being delighted and stimulated by the things we experience 43:16
You have to be aware of the problem, aware enough to want to do a meditation. If it is not big enough for people to look for a cure, then there is no way to defeat it 53:55

This Suffering is to be Understood - Tan Kaccāna
Tan Kaccāna reflects on the nature of suffering - dukkha and the duties of the four noble truths. He encourages us to investigate the dukkha that is present right now and often in the body. He asks, Am I expecting anything from the world? Do I want this condition to be different than it is? That is dukkha. He discusses the 5 aggregates subject to clinging. When we identify with any of them as me or mine, that is dukkha. When we can let go of this identification, that is the cessation of suffering.
This talk was offered on May 21, 2017 at Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery.
