Ang Thong is one of the central provinces (changwat) of Thailand. The name means golden bowl which refer to Angthong as a central for prosperity as it has a lot of rice fields.
Wat Muang is located at Mu 6, Tambon Huataphan, approximately 8 kilometers from downtown. Go along Ang Thong Wiset Chai Chan route (Highway No. 3195) Km 29 for 1 kilometer, the temple will be on the left side.
There are several important attractions in the temple. The Wat boasts one of the largest statues of Buddha in Thailand -- 95 meter (312 ft) tall -- Phra Buddha Maha Nawamin. The ubosot of Wat Muang is surrounded by the biggest lotus petals in the world. Ground floor of Wihan Kaeo is a museum (open only on Saturday and Sunday during 9 am.5 pm.) exhibiting sacred objects, antiques, and figures of renowned monks from all over the country.
The upper floor of the museum houses the first and largest silver holy Buddha image of the country, which was constructed in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of His Majesty the Kings throne ascendancy. Within the temple compound, there are figures of heaven and hell, Thai god paradise, Chinese god paradise, and a huge statue of Kuan Yin (Avalokiteshvara) female goddess. Besides, there are figures narrating the history of Thai-Burmese battle in Wiset Chai Chan.

The Great Buddha of Thailand, also known as The Big Buddha, The Big Buddha of Thailand, Phra Buddha Maha Nawamin, and Mahaminh Sakayamunee Visejchaicharn (Thai: พระพุทธมหานวมินทรศากยมุนีศรีวิเศษชัยชาญ; RTGS: Phra Phuttha Maha Nawa Mintara Sakkaya Munee Sri Viset Chai Chan), is the currently tallest statue in Thailand, the second-tallest statue in Southeast Asia, and the seventh-tallest in the world.
Located in the Wat Muang temple in Ang Thong Province,[1] this statue stands 92 m (300 ft) high, and is 63 m (210 ft) wide. Construction commenced in 1990, and was completed in 2008. It is painted gold and made of concrete.[2] The Buddha is in the seated posture called Maravijaya Attitude.
The statue was built following the order of Phra Kru Vibul Arjarakhun, the first abbot of Wat Muang temple, in order to commemorate the King Bhumibol of Thailand. The statue was built using the donated money from faithful buddhists considering as the act of making merit. The budget spent on the statue was roughly 104,200,000 baht. The statue can now be observed from the far distance, marking the fame of both Ang Thong province and Thailand.
The formal name, Phra Phuttha Mahanawamintra Sakayamunee Sri Visejchaicharn (Thai: พระพุทธมหานวมินทรศากยมุนีศรีวิเศษชัยชาญ), was given by Phra Khru Vibul Arjarakun, meaning
Phra Phuttha (พระพุทธ-) = The Buddha
Mahanawamintra (มหานวมินทร-) = The Great King Bhumibol
Sakayamunee (ศากยมุนี) = Sakayamunee Buddha (Guatama)
Sri (ศรี) = being sacred by-
Visejchaichan (วิเศษชัยชาญ) = Wiset Chai Chan, the name of the tambol (district) where the statue is located.
Together, the name can be translated to The Great Guatama Buddha of Wiset Chai Chan, built to commemorate the great King Bhumibol.
The statue sometimes called by the locals Luangpho To (หลวงพ่อโต) or Luangpho Yai (หลวงพ่อใหญ่). Which in fact, the term Luangpho To (หลวงพ่อโต) does not refer to any specific Buddha statue. The name means Big Buddha, so it has been used to call any colossal Buddha statue. The same thing goes to the term Luangpho Yai (หลวงพ่อใหญ่), which means exactly the same.

จากวัดร้างที่สันนิษฐานว่าสร้างขึ้นในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาตอนปลายหรือ พ.ศ. 2230 ตั้งอยู่แขวงเมืองวิเศษชาญ ซึ่งเคยเป็นเมืองหน้าด่าน ที่มีความเจริญรุ่งเรืองมาก ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2310 กรุงศรีอยุธยาได้เสียกรุงให้แก่พม่า และพม่าได้เผาผลาญบ้านเมือง วัดวาอาราม และพระพุทธรูปไปเป็นจำนวนมากสิ่งที่หลงเหลืออยู่ คือ ซากปรักหักพังของวัดวาอาราม และพระพุทธรูป ที่อยู่บนเนินต้นไม้ใหญ่เป็นจำนวนมาก ในปี พ.ศ. 2534 ท่านพระวิบูลอาจารคุณ ได้ร่วมพลังจิตอธิษฐานร่วมกับประชาชนผู้มีจิตศรัทธาทั่วประเทศ ได้สมทบทุนสร้างพระพุทธรูปที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลกมีพระนามว่า ”พระพุทธมหานมินทร์ศากยมุนีศรีวิเศษชัยชาญ” เพื่อน้อมถวาย แด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ด้วยขนาดหน้าตักกว้าง 62 เมตร สูง 93 เมตร มูลค่าในการก่อสร้างราวหนึ่งร้อยหกล้านบาท โดยใช้เวลาในการก่อสร้างทั้งสิ้น 16 ปี นับตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2535 – 2550

Within the temple compound, there are depictions of heaven and hell, a Thai deity paradise, a Chinese deity paradise, and a huge statue of Kuan-Im, a Chinese female goddess. In addition, there are figures narrating the history of the Thai-Burmese battle in Wiset Chai Chan. At the back of the temple, there is a fish preserve, where Ang Thong signature treats and souvenirs are for sale.

Wat Muang is located in the countryside off Highway 3195, just East of Wiset Chai Chan village, less than 10 kilometers West of Ang Thong town.
