T4D Kenya - Clip 7 - Watamu Turtle Watch
Watamu Turtle Watch ...Silvia and Vincenzo will experience a real turtle release with the famous Turtle Man
Turtles hatching, Watamu, Kenya ..... with Robert Annis
A huge thanks to both Steve Trott & Jane Spilsbury for all their hard work and dedication.
Kenya's ocean waters are home to five out of the world's eight species of turtles. All are classified as either endangered or critically endangered, and are threatened by poaching, fishing nets, development and pollution. The conservation group Watamu Turtle Watch strive to protect the turtles in Kenya.
Watamu is a beach resort on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. It lies on a small headland, between the Blue Lagoon and Watamu Bay. Its main industries are tourism and fishing. The nearest big town is Malindi to which it is connected by frequent matatu.
The shoreline in the area features white sand beaches and offshore coral formations arranged in three bays: Watamu Bay, Blue Lagoon and Turtle Bay. They are protected as part of the Watamu Marine National Park. The Marine Park is considered one of the best snorkelling and diving areas on the coast of East Africa. In order to assist the managing authorities namely Kenyan Wildlife Service, in protecting the Park, local community groups, the tourist sector and environmental groups have formed a unique organisation,Watamu Marine Association.
Watamu has a population of around 1900 and it is part of the Malindi District.
The name Watamu means sweet people in Swahili. The name came from the fact that Arab slave traders used to distribute sweets to entice the local population before taking them as slaves.
A newly discovered species of the largest spitting cobra in the world (Naja ashei) was recently (2007) discovered in Watamu.
Kenya. Watamu Turtle Rescue.
Fulfilling a long time dream I spent a week with the Local Ocean Trust: Watamu Turtle Watch, working with the team who daily rescue, tag, process and release turtles caught up in nets or found to be ill or wounded on the coastline. A private, not for profit organisation committed to the protection of Kenya’s marine environment, they love the ocean as much as I do and use practical conservation, community involvement and development in their work. A humbling experience to see the incredible work being done.
All in the most beautiful Watamu village on Kenya's East Coast.
I recommend you look into how you can support the good work being done and consider a week or two of volunteering here. It guarantees endless lessons and feel good with the most inspiring people in a beautiful part of Kenya.

DEVELOP YOUR TALENT
“You are unique. You have different talents and abilities. You don’t have to always follow in the footsteps of others. And most important, you should always remind yourself that you don't have to do what everyone else is doing and have a responsibility to develop the talents you have been given.”

Turtle heroes on Kenya's Watamu beach | #LiveWithPaula
There is a group of turtle ninja heroes on Watamu beach. Here they are relocating a turtle nest to give the 108 eggs a chance of survival. Even if all eggs hatch, only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings make it to adulthood 50 years later. This means, one survivor in about ten nests. Turtles are critically endangered and we are grateful for Local Ocean Trust!

Turtle Release in Sunny Watamu
Fikiri, co-ordinator of the Watamu Turtle Watch programme, releases a Hawksbill Turtle on the white sandy beaches of the Watamu Marine National Park. This turtle was accidentally caught by fishermen in Mida Creek, who then reported it to us. This was release number 11,158.
Local Ocean Trust works around the clock to protect the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle and other species from extinction.

CELEBRATING MY BIRTHDAY IN WATAMU | KENYA
I had a really exciting birthday as I celebrated it in Watamu with some of my good friends. The villa was way better than I expected, and as I watch this video I’m having FOMO on going back. It was a 5 star villa and if you have the chance, pay it a visit.
Watamu has a really clean beach and friendly people, weather was not too humid and we had the best service in the villa.
