I Am The Greatest, a segment from The Expressionists

The Expressionists is a film that follows several artists and educators as they use the incentive of creativity to enrich the lives of underprivileged children in an environment that has devalued the importance of art. The story is as much about the artists who forge ahead with little or no support as it is about the children who's lives are enriched by the efforts of their mentors.

For as long as I can remember we have been told how students in the United States lag behind other developed countries in Math and Science. While I don't dispute this fact, I believe we have lost our way of discovering who we are as human beings and that we have overlooked the ability of art to connect with each other. Who we are as individuals is most often left undiscovered, says the filmmaker, Douglas Clark.

The film's story begins with John Sauvé, an artist from Brighton, Michigan. Sauvé created the I Am The Greatest project -- a public art exhibit displayed throughout Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Michigan. The orange sculptures portray Muhammad Ali posing as Saint Sebastian on the cover of Esquire magazine in April of 1968. Saint Sebastian was a Roman soldier that converted to Christianity and survived a plethora of physical abuse as a result; being tied to a tree and shot with arrows. Like this Roman soldier, Ali paid a high price for standing up for his beliefs. He was stripped of his heavyweight title and spent five years in jail because he was a conscientious objector who refused the military draft.

When Anna Russo-Sieber was introduced to the John Sauvé project, she immediately saw how she could turn it into an art workshop to encourage underprivileged children to believe in themselves and overcome adversity. With Sauvé's encouragement and the cooperation of the Benton Harbor Boys and Girls Club, Anna created a workshop based on the I Am The Greatest project.

There are additional local artists and programs that will be followed in the film including Fired Up!, an after school program for Benton Harbor teens sponsored by Water Street Glass Works and Brunson Hill Art House with Tad and Laura SandEastman. Each program and artist faces a variety of adversities as they follow their vision to impact the children in their community through art. The Expressionists celebrates the benefit to the children and the efforts of the artists as they as they show us, in a tangible way, how we can improve the communities in which we live.

Celeste-Marie Bernier, professor of black studies and personal chair in English literature, School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, University of Edinburgh, and co-editor-in-chief, Journal of American Studies, Cambridge University Press; in conversation with Walter O. Evans, collector

Walter O. Evans has spent decades collecting, curating, and conserving a wide variety of African American art, music, and literature in an effort to preserve the cultural history of African Americans. Part of his collection focuses on the nineteenth-century formerly enslaved statesman and abolitionist Frederick Douglass (c. 1818–1895). In addition to inscribed books from Douglass’s and his descendants’ libraries and printed editions of his speeches, the collection contains letters, manuscripts, and photographs. Much of the material is of a personal nature: correspondence between family members, family histories, and scrapbooks compiled by Douglass and his children; the scrapbooks, with their personal documents and familial relationships, illuminate Douglass in ways never before seen. In 2018 Celeste-Marie Bernier and Andrew Taylor of the University of Edinburgh published If I Survive: Frederick Douglass and Family in the Walter O. Evans Collection, a guide to the collection born of a longstanding collaboration between the authors and Dr. Evans. Within its pages they have reproduced letters, manuscripts, and photographs from the collection along with transcriptions and commentary that provide an invaluable resource for Douglass scholars. On Friday, April 26, 2019, in conjunction with the exhibition In the Library: Frederick Douglass Family Materials from the Walter O. Evans Collection at the National Gallery of Art, Bernier speaks with Evans about the role of his collection in scholarship on Douglass and the preservation of Douglass’s legacy for a new generation of Americans.

James Oles, Senior Lecturer, Art Department, and Adjunct Curator of Latin American Art, Davis Museum, Wellesley College

In 1921, Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueiros called on his fellow artists to absorb the synthetic energy of pre-Columbian civilizations while avoiding lamentable archaeological reconstructions. This lecture explores the diverse ways that muralists envisioned the architecture of ancient American cities in several murals created in the United States in the 1930s, including Orozco's celebrated frescoes at Dartmouth.

Rouse Visiting Artist Lecture: Hans Ulrich Obrist

Hans Ulrich Obrist (b. 1968, Zurich, Switzerland) is Artistic Director of the Serpentine Galleries, London. Prior to this, he was the Curator of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Since his first show “World Soup” (The Kitchen Show) in 1991 he has curated more than 300 shows.

So far in 2018, Obrist has co-curated at the Serpentine Galleries solo shows for Rose Wylie, Wade Guyton, Ian Cheng, Sondra Perry, Tom Abts and Christo. In 2014 he curated the Swiss Pavilion at the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice, where he presented Lucius Burckhardt and Cedric Price—A stroll through a fun palace; the building was designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron, and the program was developed with artists Liam Gillick, Philippe Parreno, Tino Sehgal and Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster. Obrist's Art of Handwriting project is taking place on Instagram and is a protest against the disappearance of handwriting in the digital age.

In 2013, Obrist co-founded with Simon Castets the 89plus, a long-term, international, multi-platform research project, conceived as a mapping of the digitally native generation born in or after 1989. In 2011 Obrist received the CCS Bard Award for Curatorial Excellence, in 2009 he was made Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and in 2015 he received the International Folkwang Prize for his commitment to the arts. Obrist has lectured internationally at academic and art institutions, and is contributing editor to several magazines and journals.

Obrist’s recent publications include Mondialité, Somewhere Totally Else, Conversations in Colombia, Ways of Curating, The Age of Earthquakes with Douglas Coupland and Shumon Basar, and Lives of The Artists, Lives of The Architects.

The House is poised to debate articles of impeachment against President Trump alleging he abused his power and obstructed Congress, setting the stage for an extraordinary rebuke from the chamber of Congress most responsive to the will of the American people. For live updates:

The House will convene at 9 a.m. to begin debate leading up to the final impeachment votes. After an hour of debate on the rule governing the proceedings, six hours of debate on the articles will be divided equally between Democrats and Republicans, who could introduce procedural obstacles that would stretch the proceedings into the evening.

An artist conversation with Chris Burden and art historian Dr. Thomas Crow from March 24, 2012, at Pomona College. Burden and Crow discuss the It Happened at Pomona exhibition and era. Eismann is currently product manager for engagement at Adobe Systems, developing new learning models for photographers all around the world.

Catherine Opie In Person

Catherine Opie is an American fine arts photographer whose work explores the relationship between mainstream and marginalized societies, with an emphasis on sexual identity and how individuals inhabit their environments. Her portraiture, studio, and landscape photography has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, including a midcareer survey at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2008. In 2017, a large survey of Opie’s work opened at the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Norway. Recently, Opie debuted her first film, The Modernist, at Regen Projects in Los Angeles; it will be shown at Lehmann Maupin in New York in November 2018.

Recipient of The Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art Medal in 2016, the Julius Shulman Excellence in Photography Award in 2013, and a United States Artists Fellowship in 2006, Opie was born in Sandusky, Ohio, and holds an MFA from California Institute of the Arts. She lives and works in Los Angeles and is a professor of photography at UCLA.
