Arad, Romania
Arad is the capital city of Arad County, historically situated in the regions of Crişana, and having recently extended on the left bank of the Mureș river, in Banat region of western Romania.
An important industrial center and transportation hub on the Mureș River, Arad is also the seat of a Romanian Orthodox archbishop and features two universities, a Romanian Orthodox theological seminary and a training school for teachers. It had one of the first music conservatories in Europe. The city has a population of 159,704, making it the 12th largest city in Romania. Arad is the third largest city in the western part of the country, behind Timișoara and Oradea.

Un fel de interviu cu bunicul meu, Nicolae Tanasescu, in care imi povesteste cum era sa lucrezi ca sofer in Romania anilor '50 - '60 in industria petroliera.
Dupa scoala de soferi din cadrul armatei, a lucrat pe rand la Geofizica Bucuresti (sectia din Craiova), foraj si apoi la carotaj, unde a petrecut 25 de ani pana la inceputul lui 1990.
Vorbim de diferite tipuri de masini si camioane conduse, de diferitele metode de cercetare a solului in cautarea de titei si gaze naturale, dar si de armata.

Cacica este situată în partea central-estică a județului Suceava, la 18 km nord de Gura Humorului. Biserica catolică de aici a fost construită pentru a deservi spiritual comunitatea de mineri adusă aici la sfârșitul secolului al XVII-lea de către autoritățile austriece (Bucovina a aparținut Imperiului Habsburgic în perioada 1775-1918) în vederea exploatării zăcământului de sare. Urmașii acestor mineri, preponderent polonezi de confesiune catolică, formează și azi o comunitate închegată în zona Cacica. Prima biserică (capelă), închinată Sfintei Varvara, ocrotitoarea minerilor, a fost amenajată la Cacica în anul 1806 în subteran, la 21 m adâncime, în locul primei camere de sare exploatate (vechea salină se poate vizita). În 1810 s-a construit o biserică de lemn în care a fost adusă din principala zonă de proveniență a minerilor polonezi o icoană a Maicii Domnului cu Pruncul, replică a vestitei Madone Negre de la Czestochowa (Silezia), încă de atunci venerată ca icoană miraculoasă (făcătoare de minuni). În ciuda faptului că biserica de lemn era neîncăpătoare și se degrada rapid, noua biserică din piatră și cărămidă a fost contruită târziu, fiind sfințită neterminată, în 1904. Biserica are hramul principal ”Adormirea Maicii Domnului” (14-15 august) zi în care aici se desfășoară cel mai important pelerinaj catolic din Moldova. Biserica, realizată în stil neogotic, este superb amenajată și decorată. Pe altarul principal se găsește icoana miraculoasă amintită. Lateral sunt alte două altare mai mici, ale Preasfintei Fecioare Maria și ale Sfântului Iosif. În spatele bisericii a fost amenajată o grotă care reproduce arătarea miraculoasă a Maicii Domnului de la Lourdes (Franța, 1858). Grota, construită în 1908, a fost extinsă în 1936 cu o galerie pentru adăpostirea pelerinilor. În anul 1996, Sanctuarul Marian de la Cacica a fost declarat sanctuar diacezan, în 1997 ”Sanctuar național”, iar în anul 2010 Papa Ioan Paul al II-lea îl ridică la rangul de Basilica Minor.
Cacica is located in the central-eastern part of Suceava County, 18 km north of Gura Humorului. The Catholic Church here was built to serve the mining community brought here by the Austrian authorities at the end of the 17th century for the exploitation of the salt mine (Bucovina belonged to the Habsburg Empire between 1775 and 1918). The descendants of these miners, predominantly Poles of Catholic Confession, form today a community in the Cacica area. The first church (chapel), dedicated to St. Varvara, the protector of the miners, was set up in Cacica in 1806, in underground, at 21 m deep, in the place of the first exploited salt chamber (the old salt mine can be visited). In 1810, a wooden church was built in which an icon of the Virgin Mary and Child was brought from the main area of the Polish miners, a replica of the famous Black Madonna from Czestochowa (Silesia), since that time worshiped as a miraculous icon. Despite the fact that the wooden church was too small and degraded rapidly, the new church of stone and brick was built late, being sanctified unfinished, in 1904. The church has as principal patron The Assumption of the Virgin (14-15 August) here being the most important Catholic pilgrimage in Moldova. The church, made in neo-gothic style, is beautifully decorated. The miraculous icon is on the main altar. On the other side there are two smaller altars, of the Holy Virgin Mary and of St. Joseph. Behind the church was arranged a cave that reproduces the miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes (France, 1858). The cave, built in 1908, was extended in 1936 with a gallery for sheltering pilgrims. In 1996, Marian Sanctuary in Cacica was declared a diacezan sanctuary, in 1997 National Sanctuary, and in 2010 Pope John Paul II raised it to the rank of Minor Basilica.
Oradea
Oradea the capital city of Bihor County and Crișana region, is one of the important centers of economic, social and cultural development in the western part of Romania, retaining these characteristics throughout history. The city is nestled between the hills that separate and unify in a harmonious way with plain Crișana. Located on the banks of Crișul Repede River, that divides the city into almost equal halves, it is the gateway to Central and Western Europe. The city is located in the north-west of Romania, at the intersection of parallel 47 ° 03' north latitude with meridian 21 ° 55' east longitude.
Located about 10 km from Borș, the most important crossing point on the west border, Oradea ranks tenth in size among Romanian cities. It covers an area of 11,556 ha. The city is at an altitude of 126 m above sea level, in the opening of the Criș valley and the plain area, in an area of contact between the extensions of the Apuseni Mountains and the extended plain Crișana-Banat. It lies as the area of transition from relief hills, to the Pannonian plain. City topoclimatic action is determined by the prevailing Western winds. Climate is Temperate Continental, with some oceanic influences.

We are looking fine, flight. Data is good.
NARRATOR:
At the dawn of the 21st Century, space agencies in Europe and
America began making plans to land the first humans on Mars.
But manned missions to the red planet have been proposed before.
For some, Mars holds the answers to mankind’s future in space.
Others say Mars is too far, too dangerous and too expensive for
humans to explore.
And in a world torn by troubles, some say there is no need or will
for mankind to reach into space anymore.
More than 30 years after the last Apollo astronaut walked on the
moon, the American-manned space program seems to have lost its
way, unable to reach beyond even low-earth orbit.
DR. ROBERT ZUBRIN:
We’ve got a problem, NASA has been literally going around in
circles with the space program for the past 30 years.
NARRATOR:
Astronautically engineer, Dr. Robert Zubrin, has been arguing for
years that sending humans to Mars is the mission the space
program needs.
ZUBRIN:
It’s time that we set goals for NASA that were worthy of the risks
of the human space flight. Mars is the next logical step in our space
program image. It’s the challenge that’s been staring us in the face
for the past 30 years. It’s the planet that’s most like the earth, it’s
the planet that has on it the resources needed to support life and
therefore some day technological civilization. It’s the planet that
will provide us with the answer as to whether life is prevalent in
the universe or exclusive to the earth.
And it’s the planet that will give us the critical tests as to whether
humanity, can breakout out of the planet of our birth and become a
space-faring species.
NARRATOR:
In the early 1990s, Zubrin was the head of the Mars Direct
program at Martin Marietta Astronautics. His team developed a
mission to Mars that could be done at the fraction of Nasa’s
projected costs.
Using only existing technology Zubrin argues that the first steps on
Martian soil could be made within 10 years.
ZUBRIN:
There is absolutely nothing in this that is beyond our technology.
DR. EDWARD WEILER:
We are not ready to send humans to Mars right now. We don’t
know how to keep them alive. There are people out there who say
we can go to Mars tomorrow. One of my requirements, one of
NASA’s requirements is that if we send humans to Mars we bring
them back alive.
NARRATOR:
For the past 15-years Zubrin and his colleagues have waged a
campaign to convince society and the political class that humans
on Mars should be the goal for NASA now.
This is the story of our cold neighboring planet and the debate over
whether man’s fate it tied to the red world. It’s the story of an
engineer’s journey - and the battle of ideas over which direction in
space will truly benefit mankind.
