SAFARILANDS - WATERBERG MOUNTAINS - SOUTH AFRICA
Safariland Game Reserve
Safarilands Game Reserve is a relatively new Game Reserve nestled at the foothills of the malaria free Waterberg Mountains just 40km from Lephalale. Containing three of the “Big Five” namely White Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo, and then to include Hippo and Crocodile to make up the dangerous seven. Guests can choose from a variety of lodges to cater for their every need and within an affordable budget. Land marked by the flat-topped Ga-Bobididi Hills, Safarilands is well- known from every direction in the Limpopo Province.
Initiated by international investors Robert and Catherine DuHadaway in 2004, Safarilands covers 7400 hectares of prime Bushveld. The changing face from cattle ranch to game reserve has created a magnificent platform on which to build a variety of habitats for plains game and a good mixture of diverse habitats for many large and small animals alike.
Between the harsh dry western climate and the humid eastern climate of Southern Africa, the combined eco-zones give one a broad mixture of habitats and diverse geology. Safarilands boasts a wide range of mammals, birds, insects and reptiles which flourish in the area together creating a rich biodiversity. Adding further value to the area is the Palala River which host several amphibian and fish species, allowing fishermen to enjoy a full day of fun. The bird count is already in excess of over 300 species with the most popular bird sightings on the Palala River or in each lodges’ own perimeter.
Safarilands offers one of the most unique opportunities for any cultural enthusiast or photographer. The Bobidi Mountain! A Late Iron Age Site (ca 1000 to 1800) of the Shongwane tribe. Here on Safarilands, the Ga-Seleka and Batlhalerwa established spheres of influence in the mountain stronghold Bobididi near Villa Nora and illustrates the kind of site which was used by second millennium farming communities. With our expert guide to lead you along the cattle path to experience what no-one holds anywhere in South Africa - A simple journey on an ancient path of survival.

Telekishi
Telekishi Community Project: Many of our communities are not aware of the natural resources around them and many of us are not aware that we can support these communities to benefit from these natural resources by initiating conservation projects in our region. A good example is the Telekishi Community Project in the Limpopo Province, which is perfectly placed in the middle of the Waterberg and surrounded by private and provincial game reserves like Masebe Game Reserve. The Telekishi community has rich cultural history sites, some with rock paintings dating between 11th to 18th centuries which are scattered in the narrow valleys with interesting rock formations. The Telekishi Project focuses on rehabilitating a severely degraded wetland in the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve and enabling the local Telekeshi community to continue using this natural resource for its own benefit through skills development in alien vegetation control. It has also contributed to the community's tourism initiatives through the publication of a booklet to support its cultural heritage walking trail. The Telekeshi Project began in 2008 and has been supported by the EWT and its Conservation Training Programme. The EWT and its Conservation Training Programme students have helped the community to clear the area in and around a 74 hectare wetland of alien plants, primarily the highly invasive Lantana camara. The wetland eye, which has also been fenced off from cattle and goats, has since shown an increase in general biomass. Furthermore, the grass and sedge cover in this area has spread and increased substantially and the alien plant seed bank has been removed. The ecological functioning of the wetland has improved and the community is again able to utilize the clean water provided by this system, because there is no proper drinking water supply for 300 house holds in this community. At the end of 2010, EWT was awarded with the Kudu Award for the role they played in the Telekishi Community Project.

=====================
Set in the foothills of the majestic Waterberg mountain range, the 22000ha Entabeni Game Reserve is a preferred destination for Johannesburg and Pretoria city visitors seeking a luxury safari experience and without travelling great distances.
Entabeni is located in the Limpopo province of South Africa and a short distance from the main north-south highway that runs between Pretoria and the Zimbabwean border.
Each of the game lodges at the Entabeni Game Reserve offer unique accommodation, from stilted houses high up in the tree canopy to absolute extravagance.
The word Entabeni means Place of the Mountain, fitting considering its location, and the reserve proudly encompasses 5 separate ecosystems. It’s a place where high valleys drop down into warm basins and savannah makes way for wetlands and thickly wooded plains. The area is a true reflection of Africa as a whole, a biosphere where all living creatures co-exist.
Top 6 reasons to visit Entabeni Nature Reserve
=======================================
1. Game viewing holds an endless fascination for human beings where so often, the unpredictable happens. Join a game drive through the reserve to watch the plentiful animals that include the Big 5 (lion, rhino, leopard, elephant and buffalo) and many other smaller mammal species.
2. Birding can be enjoyed from your private deck or along the banks of the Entabeni Lake. The area has over 350 recorded species, enough to keep birders happy for weeks!
3. Playing a round of golf at the Legend Golf and Safari Resort is one you won’t forget in a hurry. Wild animals roam the fairways, each of which have been designed by a golfing great. Golf Digest magazine rated 3 holes on this course as the ‘most terrifying, frightening, fear-inducing holes in golf’. You won’t be disappointed.
4. Take boat cruise on the Entabeni Lake to watch the hippos and crocodiles along the banks. If fortunate, you may see a fish eagle catching prey on the water or crocodiles on the hunt.
5. The contemporary restaurants at many of the Entabeni lodges employ top chefs to prepare local cuisine. Enjoy a pre-dinner drink at one of the lively bars and after an excellent meal, end the evening off with a nightcap in a boma, relating the day’s stories around an evening fire.
6. Makapansgat is a UNESCO world heritage site where significant hominid fossil discoveries were made. Start your tour at the Arend Dieperink Museum in Mokopane to view the finds, then take the tour of 3 caves, the last one the scene of a horrific battle in 1854 between Voortrekkers and Ndebele clans.
Transport
========
Entabeni Game Reserve has its own private landing strip for flights to and from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. This airport is 240km from Entabeni for those wanting to travel by car. There are car rental agencies located at OR Tambo airport and Johannesburg and Pretoria city centres, otherwise order a vehicle online. A 4x4 rental is the recommended option for travelling in this area.
Did you know?
============
The Legend Golf and Safari Resort has probably the world’s most unique 19th hole. Golfers are transported via helicopter up to Hangklip Mountain at 430m high where a small tee box is located. Using sophisticated camera technology, the ball is tracked down to the green which is shaped into the map of Africa.
The Waterberg is where an unusual tree is to be found; the pale green bark of the fever tree makes it conspicuous amongst other trees and is called the fever tree after past travellers incorrectly thought it was the cause of fever. The tree grows near to undisturbed water sources that often carry a tropical disease in parasitic worms called bilharzia.
