Port Douglas tours and things to do: View crocodiles & birds on a 'Waterbird' river cruise.
One of the most relaxing things to do in Port Douglas is join a Waterbird calm water river cruise on the secluded tidal river alongside Port Douglas.
This waterway winds its way through a picturesque mangrove wilderness where you can observe crocodiles and birdlife in their natural environment.
Away from the crowds with a small group of like minded travellers, no engine noise and zero exhaust fumes, you are able to see, hear and smell nature up close.
Tour description: Cruising silently from our Marina berth Waterbird passes luxury yachts and vessels of many shapes and sizes.
As Waterbird turns into the river your skipper ensures you have the best opportunity to spot wildlife including Saltwater Crocodiles and bird life living in this unique habitat.
After exploring the upper reaches of the river Waterbird cruises down the channel towards the entrance of Dickson Inlet, where you pass by the historical Sugar Wharf which is still standing from a bygone era.
Looking to the west you can see the identifying outlines of Mount Demi and the mountains around Mossman Gorge. To the north Thornton's Peak rises above the Daintree World Heritage area.
Your tour finishes passing sandy beaches and rocky coves surrounded by coconut palms before returning to the Marina.
Tour time is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, travelling approximately 10 kilometers.

Hey guys,
This is a 3 day trip on how to do Northern Queensland, Australia in style. First, we land at the Cairns airport and drive up to Port Douglas. Then we head even further North to the tropical Daintree Rainforest. There we have a swim in a nearby billabong (river bend). Then Jenna Rumney shows us around their tropical fruit farm. We see bidiba, breadfruit, miracle fruit, annona, jackfruit, bananas and more. Coconut ice cream is GOOD.
The next day we go snorkeling with Calypso Reef Cruises. These guys were great. We see amazing coral, turtles, fishes and a lot more cool stuff. Also, we learn a lot about the history of the Great Barrier Reef. V and Shannon do express to me later on how much climate change has affected the GBR. It used to be much different, alive and vibrant. This deeply saddened me.
The next day we went Stand Up Paddle (SUP) boarding on the Mossman River with four dogs. On a hot afternoon, there is nothing better than jumping in that cold water and splashing around. Jenna even has a howling session with one of the dogs.
Then we pack up and do a quick and short tour of Cairns, Australia. Checking out the free public barbecues and the helicopters. It's amazing.
Finally we fly back to the Gold Coast of Australia. If you stick around until the end, you'll hear a message from an important leader in the effort to save the Great Barrier Reef, John Rumney.
