A Day at Burgage (Blessington Lake)
I spent the day at Burgage on the Blessington Lakes. I recommend to anyone seeking a little time and space to themselves to visit this place. Such beauty and sense of history is hard to come by.
Burgage, anciently known as Domhnach-Imleach and associated with Saint Molomma, its church was one of the four principal churches of the Diocese of Glendalough.
The oldest existing mention of the church in 1179 and continues up to the 1730’s. It covers the holdings of the church, sets it in the context of the history of the period and describes the remaining ruins. Interestingly, the silver lining in the cloud of Henry VIII’s suppression of religious houses is the inquisitions into their possessions which gives us much more information about them than would otherwise have survived.

BLESSINGTON GREENWAY
A lovely walk along the Blessington Greenway on a beautiful Spring evening.
This walk links the historic town of Blessington with the Palladian mansion at Russborough House. The trail starts at Blessington and leads south along the shores of Blessington Lakes and through forest and natural woodland. The Greenway commences at Avon Ri Activity Centre at the southern end of the town and weaves its way along the shores, crosses an ancient medieval Ringfort, uses the footpath along part of the N81 before turning back into the forest at Burgage Moyle lane. It then crosses the Valleymount Road (R758) and makes its way to Russellstown Bay adjacent to Russborough House. Along the way you will have the opportunity to appreciate the magnificent scenery and wildlife in the area.
