How the English learned to hate Catholics
Medieval England was proudly Catholic, but after the Reformation, anti-catholic prejudice came to be a cornerstone of English and then British identity.
A lecture by Alec Ryrie, Gresham Professor of Divinity
20 November 2019 6PM GMT
Medieval England was proudly Catholic and ostentatiously loyal to Rome. But from the late sixteenth century until recent times – and even now – anti-Catholic prejudice has been a cornerstone of English and British identity. This lecture will look at how this prejudice grew out of the persecution of Protestants in the 1550s, at the idealistic historian who crystallised it, and at the political crises, real and invented, which turned his text into a paranoiacs’ charter.

Each To Their Own.
Poem Put To Derry Riots
Helicopters out; a sign of worse to come??
As officers and republicans cautiously load there guns.
Each passionate in hateful words be it taigs or louts or huns,
Each in disregard of peace, cause of what the others done
Lots of tents and activity down by free-derry wall
Peaceful protests of hunger, for-the-people to heed there call.
Drinkers sat upon the banking cant relate to them at all,
they see there attidudes and mindsets, obsolete and miniscule
I heard another bombscare caused bishop street to close,
A community wet with retrospect is kept light upon its toes.
Though its the working man who feels the blunt of rebellions vicious blows
No-ones fighting his own struggle, to feed his weans or buy them clothes
Theres the tea-ladys found in bars, that speak firmly of there hate,
Bitter offiicers in the station, the youth they aggrivate
Each against digested chemicals, the un-involved those help sedate
that enemy, just a bi-product of each impoverished council estate.
This is a twisted web thats started, as idealogys contort and shift
One's angry at suppliers for the things that he has sniffed
Another turn's to that affliction cause of the innocent he's stiffed
Each within an institution; intrenched in a bias, bitter rift...
Mass hypocrisy on every level
Each a victim of the others babble
Each a hand on each stone-thrown
Each for gains of their selfish own
Each a part to take in blame
ALL should hang there heads in shame.

IT’S BACK … FOR THE FINAL CHAPTER
New Line Cinema Invites Fans to the Waterloo Vaults for Epic IT CHAPTER 2 Horror Experience
This August, New Line Cinema invites thrill-seekers to the ultimate immersive experience, based on the highly anticipated film IT CHAPTER 2, directed by Andy Muschietti and featuring an ensemble cast led by James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain and Bill Hader.
Taking over the expansive and atmospheric Vaults in London Waterloo, IT CHAPTER 2: THE VAULTS EXPERIENCE will bring to life breathtaking sets and terrifying scenes from the film in an epic and highly interactive adventure for movie lovers.
Spanning over 11,000 square feet of bespoke sets built into the vast underground maze of disused railway tunnels, the experience will let ticketholders follow in the daring footsteps of The Losers’ Club.
Open to the public from 31st August, ahead of IT CHAPTER 2’s release in UK cinemas on 6th September, the experience will combine nine themed areas where visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the chilling world of Pennywise the clown, and the dark underbelly of Derry.
ABOUT THE FILM
Evil resurfaces in Derry as director Andy Muschietti reunites the Losers Club in a return to where it all began with “IT Chapter Two,” the conclusion to the highest-grossing horror film of all time.
Twenty-seven years after the Losers Club defeated Pennywise, he has returned to terrorize the town of Derry once more. Now adults, the Losers have long since gone their separate ways. However, people are disappearing again, so Mike, the only one of the group to remain in their hometown, calls the others home. Damaged by the experiences of their past, they must each conquer their deepest fears to destroy Pennywise once and for all...putting them directly in the path of the shape-shifting clown that has become deadlier than ever.
The film is Muschietti’s follow-up to 2017’s critically acclaimed and massive global box office hit “IT,” which grossed more than $700 million worldwide. Both redefining and transcending the genre, “IT” became part of the cultural zeitgeist.
“IT Chapter Two” stars James McAvoy (the “X-Men” movies, “Split,” “Glass”) as Bill, Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty,” “Mama,” “Molly’s Game”) as Beverly, Bill Hader (HBO’s “Barry,” “The Skeleton Twins”) as Richie, Isaiah Mustafa (TV’s “Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments”) as Mike, Jay Ryan (TV’s “Mary Kills People”) as Ben, James Ransone (HBO’s “The Wire”) as Eddie, and Andy Bean (“Swamp Thing,” “Allegiant”) as Stanley. Reprising their roles as the original members of the Losers Club are Jaeden Martell as Bill, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley, Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie, Finn Wolfhard as Richie, Sophia Lillis as Beverly, Chosen Jacobs as Mike, and Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben. Bill Skarsgård returns in the seminal role of Pennywise.
Muschietti directed “IT Chapter Two” from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman (“IT,” the “Annabelle” films) based on the novel IT by Stephen King. Barbara Muschietti, Dan Lin and Roy Lee produced the film, with Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Gary Dauberman, Marty Ewing, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg serving as the executive producers.
New Line Cinema presents, a Double Dream/Vertigo Entertainment/Rideback Production, an Andy Muschietti film, “IT Chapter Two.” The film is slated for worldwide release in cinemas and IMAX beginning on September 5, 2019 and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
