Ancient water wheels in Fayoum Egypt
Source: fishconsult.org
These wooden water wheels were first introduced to Fayoum by the Ptolemies engineers for lifting water between four and five meters to the irrigation channels of the agronomic projects. These water wheels move water in a very old traditional way. During those old days, certain families specialized in making these water wheels. These historic water wheels do no longer exist in Egypt except several of them in some locations in Fayoum. The video shows four waterwheels located in the city center which is among tourist attraction. There are several water wheels situated in other places in Fayoum. The governorate of Fayoum adopted these historic and unique water wheels as its national symbol.

Deir el-Banat Egypt Fayum

EGYPT - Traveling in the Fayum from Karanis to Tebtunis
On the road in Egypt's Fayum region, a low-lying depression south of Cairo and west of the Nile river valley. This footage was recorded on June 8, 2012. This video shows a bit of the road between the sites of Karanis and Tebtunis. To save time, the guide and driver decided to avoid the main highway and utilize country roads running along the many canals. We did a lot of stopping and asking the locals for directions.

Helnan Auberge Fayoum...
Originally named Crocodilopolis, then Arsinoe, Medinet El-Fayoum, often quoted as the land of roses, was the main place of worship of the crocodile god, Sobek. Apparently, during the ancient time, crocodiles were adorned with gold and fed honey cakes and meat by the priests of interest are the huge wooden waterwheels.
The waters of the Bahr Yusef are distributed throughout the oasis from Medinet, the capital of the Fayoum. Approximately 200 of the great waterwheels are located throughout the oasis. The Seven Waterwheels, a Fayoum landmark, are surrounded by mangos, palms and willows. A great stone obelisk was erected in honor of Senwosret I in Abgig during the 12th Dynasty.
Located about 80 Km to the south west of Cairo, Fayoum emerges on the map as a bud blooming from the stem , Fayoum has played an important role during the different eras of the Egyptian history , traces and remains can assure these facts from different periods like geese of Maidum Hawwarah pyramid from pharaonic periods Fayoum portraits from Graeco -- Roman and different Monasteries from the Coptic period , Fayoum is well -- know for its unique Sawaki which means water wheels as it has many water stream and that explains the name Fayoum which is derived from word vium which means water in ancient Egyptian language.

This is an animation for my final project as a response to the theme of 'Tales of Magical Objects'. It is based around the Egyptian necklace 'Al-Fayyum Al-Lahun' from the Pitt Rivers Museum. The animation uses a shadow puppet technique inspired by Lotte Reiniger as well as a style of Rob Ryan.

The Ancient City of Medinet Madi, Egypt
Medinet Madi is just one of the many ancient cities remaining in Egypt that tourists don't have time to visit. However, it is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Fayoum area.
The temple remains are fairly well preserved due to its isolated location and is one of the few surviving monuments of the Middle Kingdom. Worn reliefs of pharaohs Amenenhet II and Amenemhet IVV offer to deities in the shrimes.
A beautiful site and worth your effort if you have the time to visit.
