St. Maarten - Phillipsburg - Wathey Pier -April 18, 2018
St. Maarten's Wathey Pier is a popular cruise ship destination. A water taxi provides a brief trip across Dutch bay to Town Center pier. St. Maarten took a direct hit from Hurricane Irene in September 2017. Wild goats are huddled in a mountain washout.

2016-06-24 Sint Maarten - St Martin of Tours Catholic Church and Phillipsburg beach area
The church is right on the beach. You could actually stay at a hotel on the beach, enjoy the sand and surf (figure of speech, the water is actually quite calm and crystal-clear blue), and walk to church and places to eat. KFC is just the other side of Wathey Square past the courthouse. Somehow it just tastes better than KFC in the US. Don't know why.
2016-06-24 Sint Maarten - Phillipsburg harbour and Wathey Square
This is the little Dutch courthouse. When you are here, you are in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the country of Sint Maarten which is one of the four countries that make up the Kingdom (the others being Aruba, Curacao, and the Netherlands itself). The country of the Netherlands includes the islands of Saba, Sint Eustasius, and Bonaire. Confused yet? It takes a while to figure out (assuming it even matters to anyone not governed by it). But don't worry, my fellow Americans, everyone speaks English, they use dollars, and they have McDonald's and KFC.

Description
SINT MAARTEN MULTILINGUAL - TROLLEY TRAIN PHILIPSBURG TOUR
On this Multilingual tour as soon as you depart the harbor you’ll start to enjoy the charm and scenery of the South of this island which has been flying the flags of both Holland and France since 1648. We’ll drive you from Phillipsburg, the Dutch capital, in to the Great Salt Pond Island. Continue sightseeing across old back street on our way to visit Fort Amsterdam for pictures with your favorite Cruise Ship in the background, and see the national bird sanctuary. We’ll hop-on our Trolley Train and restart our sightseeing. Driving back, this time via Front Street, we’ll visit new Walter Plantz Square for some last minute souvenir shopping. Continuing across Historical Philipsburg while learning the heritage you will pass by old building full of stories to tell. Arriving at the Street Market in Philipsburg, you can see the first Methodist church that was built in 1785 with red bricks and a wooden roof on our way back to the Cruise Terminal.
When the first Dutch settlers arrived on St Maarten in 1631, they chose the sandy strip separating Great Bay from Great Salt Pond to build their capital, Phillipsburg. Originally starting on the west end at the foot of Fort Amsterdam, the settlement has spread gradually east, to where your ship is moored today.
On your trolley train tour, you’ll take in the unique sight of the national bird sanctuary, Great Salt Pond, the largest permanent saline lagoon saltwater pond on the island, covering an area of 2.25 square kilometres.
Next, you’ll continue on to the other side of Great Bay to Fort Amsterdam, the first fort built by Dutch settlers in the Caribbean, in 1631. Nowadays in ruins, it is nonetheless still a picturesque and far-reaching vantage point. It’s also the perfect place for a selfie with your favourite cruise ship in the background, looking back across Great Bay.
On your way back, you’ll drive down bustling Front Street, before stopping to admire the traditional ‘ginger-bread house’ architecture of Walter Plantz Square – the perfect place for finding those must-have souvenirs. Then, it’s back in the trolley train for the quick 15 minute hop back to the ship.
