Designed and built by Mary Watts, the Chapel is a unique fusion of art nouveau, Celtic, Romanesque and Egyptian influence with Mary's own original style. It is impossible not to admire the work and inspiration that lies behind this beautiful little building.

Hymn Writer Issac Watts
Born July 27, 1674, in Southhampton, England, Isaac Watts became one of the world’s most prolific hymn writers. The eldest of nine children, Isaac shared his father’s love of books—learning Greek and Hebrew as a young man.
He also had the “strongly held faith” of his father, a dissenter from the Anglican Church. Because of his father’s belief’s, Isaac was banned from attending Cambridge or Oxford. Instead, he attended an academy run by dissenters. His years of language and Bible study led to his prolific hymn writing.
One of Watts’s most famous collections was called The Psalms of David: Imitated in the Language of the New Testament. He wrote that he wanted “to imitate rather than to translate” the Psalms, including his “imitation” of Psalm 98, which became one of the most popular hymns of all time.

Watts Cemetery - Terracotta and Timelessness
The Watts pottery employed local people, training them to be potters. Their skills created unique and beautiful grave markers. Two can be seen in this short video. The Watts Cemetery is on the outskirts of Guildford, Surrey, and is a must-see if you are in the area. This was shot in July 2010.
G F Watts: Protest - Progress - Prophecy
G F Watts drew on an extensive range of classical, biblical and literary sources throughout his long career. He continually sought new ways to explore and adapt even the most familiar narratives to create his own unique and profound vision.
From the 1880s onwards love, death, hope and redemption grew to be central themes in Watts’s work. In order to express these fundamental human ideas he developed an increasingly symbolic visual language.
See a stunning selection of G F Watts’s symbolist works on display in our historic galleries, re-displayed this spring, at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village.
International Women's Day At The Watts Gallery
Equality was a key concern for artists George and Mary Watts, who resided in Compton. Mary was a pioneering sculptor in a male-dominated world and was actively involved with the suffragists. To mark both International Women’s Day and the centenary of the first women getting the vote, the Watts Gallery put together a day of events and a new display. Our reporter Katherine Bett was there.

Time Out Walks, Book 2, Walk 12, Guildford to Farnham. 23/10/11.
This 14 mile walk through the Surrey Heathlands is rather special as it was the last one created by Nicholas Albery, author of the first book of 'Time Out Country Walks', and his only one appearing in book 2. Thus, today was given over to the tenth year since his passing and his inspiration...
The walker leaves Guildford via The Wey South Path but is soon diverging away inland towards The North Downs Way (this is an optional route to Watts Gallery); passing Loseley Park, the walker continues on by the Chapel/Gallery before passing under the A3 for lunch at Puttenham.
Thereafter, the walk continues through some delightful heathland and woodland scenery, with a few lakes thrown in for variety, before rejoining the North Downs Way for the return into Farnham.
This fine example of Nick's great work is clearly reflected in the fine walks created by others since his unfortunate passing...a great inspiration.R.I.P.
(The Smooth Snake seen in this video is rarely seen outside these sandy Heathlands, so it's a shame that such a rare species is now one less!).

ALDGATE TO WHITECHAPEL - THEN AND NOW (2011)
Here's my newest video in my series of Then & Now shots - and it's getting easier! For those of you with an interest in Jack the Ripper or the history of the East End of London, you should get a kick from this. A couple of them aren't exact but generally it's not a bad job. There'll be more in due course.
