RV TRIP TIP: Mt. Rushmore, Custer SP & the Black Hills of SD
While Mount Rushmore is the most well-known attraction in the Black Hills of South Dakota, there are lots of great things to see and do here. We just scratched the surface on this easy, one-day scenic drive.
Although Yellowstone National Park is probably the most famous place to see bison (buffalo), Custer State Park has one of the largest publicly-owned herds in the world, roaming freely throughout the park and often stopping traffic along the the road.
Connecting Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Iron Mountain Road is a work of art in itself. The highway passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Black Hills and includes three tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore in the distance. The road is famous for its Pigtail Bridges that allow travelers to gain or lose elevation quickly.
The Needles Highway is a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen and rugged granite mountains. Completed in 1922, the road's name comes from the needle-like granite formations you'll see along the way. It also has the longest, and coolest, tunnel!
Of course we visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial too, as no trip to the area would be complete without experiencing this amazing site up close. We hike the easy 6/10-mile Presidential Trail for stunning views almost directly beneath the granite faces.
This is only the beginning of the spectacular scenery in the Black Hills. For the more adventurous, be sure to visit Wind Cave National Park and Harney Peak if you have more time to spend in this beautiful part of the world.
We stayed in one of the many full-hook-up commercial RV parks in the area, but there are lots of State Park and National Forest campgrounds to choose from as well.
If you haven't yet visited the Black Hills, maybe this quick snapshot of the area will inspire you to add it to your must-see list. The admission price to the Custer State Park is well worth it!

Death Valley National Park Road Trip - How You DON'T Want It To End
Death Valley National Park Road Trip
If you're not a big fan of the heat, but want to know what it's like inside Death Valley, this Death Valley tour video might help. This is the road trip my friend and I took just before summer.

Death Valley is one of the hottest places in the world. It’s also a short 4 hour drive away from Los Angeles. With summer approaching, I wanted to take a road trip out to Death Valley before it got too hot.
My friend Bobby went with me. Neither of us had been, yet. We were only there two days yet I’d say we did learn how to road trip Death Valley successfully by failing at a few things first.
Here are some basic tips to get you started:
Bring a hat, sunscreen, and lots of water. And make sure you are 100% confident in whatever car you are taking out there. The conditions are rough. There’s virtually no cell phone service and no relief from the sun if you get stranded. Also, Death Valley camping is a thing, but I suggesting you know what you're doing. Because we wanted to make things simple, we just stayed in a motel in Beatty, right outside the park.
As I said, we planned on making this road trip to Death Valley a simple one, but it turned out to be the opposite of that because of car trouble. I had to get my car towed. I’ll let the video explain that.
Here are some more tips if you’re traveling to Death Valley:
What to see when visiting Death Valley:
-Father Crowley Vista
-Rhyolite Ghost Town
-Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
-Badwater Basin
-Devil’s Golf Course
-Artist’s Drive
-Artist’s Palette
-Zabriskie Point (I don't know for certain, but this seemed to be a popular Las Vegas to Death Valley tour route destination. It was super crowded with lots of tour buses and people pouring out.)
-Dante’s View
My favorites:
Badwater Basin, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Artist’s Drive/Palette
Devil’s Golf Course was pretty cool too. But mainly just because it’s fun to walk on. It’s razor sharp though.
Also, If you road trip Death Valley, consider the car you bring because there are certain roads that are only good for high clearance vehicles. Most of top sights are all accessible via paved roads, but there are a few (like the Race Track) that aren’t.
Where to stay in Death Valley:
We stayed overnight in a town called Beatty. It’s right outside the east edge of Death Valley and much cheaper. There are also some town-like areas (used town very loosely) inside the park with hotels, cottages, and camp grounds. Consider staying in Furnace Creek, Stovepipe Wells, or Panamint Springs. If you're looking for hotels near Death Valley, you don't have many options. I'd say Lone Pine to the west and Beatty to the east are your best options. Death Valley camping sites can be found all over the park. But again, make sure you know what you're doing and go in a cooler month.
We went in May to beat the heat, but it didn’t work. Death Valley weather is crazy. It was 110 and 111 the days we were there. The week before the weather was in the 90’s. The NP website actually says May is usually when it starts getting too hot for visitors.
I hope you enjoy watching our Death Valley tour via video. It was definitely quite the experience.

Then, we are going to mosey on over to meet the Hutchinson family show some friends of theirs who are greenhorns how to get out on the trail.
Finally, Reece shows us an unusual park that isn’t filled with trees and green grass but rather some enormous red rocks. At Your Leisure is climbing your way now.

Las Vegas Red Rock Canyon Vacation Escapes
In this video we visit Red Rock Canyon in Southern Nevada.
The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Nevada is an area managed by the Bureau of Land Management as part of its National Landscape Conservation System, and protected as a National Conservation Area. It is located about 15 miles west of Las Vegas, and is easily seen from the Las Vegas Strip. The area is visited by more than two million people each year.
The conservation area showcases a set of large red rock formations: a set of sandstone peaks and walls called the Keystone Thrust. The walls are up to 3,000 feet high, making them a popular hiking and rock climbing destination. The highest point is La Madre Mountain, at 8,154 feet.
A one-way loop road, 13 miles long, provides vehicle access to many of the features in the area. Several side roads and parking areas allow access to many of the area trails. A visitor center is located at the start of the loop road. The loop road is also very popular for bicycle touring; it begins with a moderate climb, then is mostly downhill or flat.
Red Rock Canyon is a side-canyon accessible only by an unmaintained primitive road from the scenic loop which mostly only off-road or high clearance vehicles can access. State Route 159 cuts through an unnamed but often-visited valley; it is commonly, but mistakenly, referred to as Red Rock Canyon. The Wilson Cliffs, or Keystone Thrust, a massive wall of rock, can be seen to the west from SR 159.

Sedona-Jerome-Devils Bridge, Cathedral Rock, Fay Canyon Trails Sedona
#sedona #jeromearizona #devilsbridgesedona
#cottonwoodarizona #sedonaarizonawinter
This week we continue RVing to Sedona and Jerome staying at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood just outside of both Sedona and Jerome Arizona. We did a lot of hiking in Sedona at the Cathedral Rock Trail, Devils Bridge Trail and the Fay Canyon Trail. Hiking Cathedral Rock trail we had to stop before going all the way up on account of Nikki. So we then hiked around the Templeton Trail that went around Cathedral Rock. That was a nice easy hike and filled with awesome view of Cathedral Rock. Devils Bridge Trail was really fun as we got to drive closer to the trail head with the 4X4 capabilities of our truck. The Devils Bridge Trail was a little tougher in a couple places as we had to do a couple steep rock scrambles with Nikki, but she did awesome! We didn't actually get to go out on the Devils Bridge itself but we did make it to it and watched a few other people going on the bridge to take pics! After that we hiked the Fay Canyon Trail which was 1 mile out and 1 mile back and was an easy hike.
The following morning we did some exploring in Jerome Arizona which was only a few miles from our campsite at Dead Horse Ranch State Park. This was an old copper mining town built on the side of a mountain. It was really cool to see each street was on a different level. Jerome Arizona is one of the coolest old ghost towns we've seen so far and look forward to going back someday and spending more time there exploring.
Sedona Arizona winter was really beautiful with just some snow on the rocks, but much much more comfortable than the temps at the Grand Canyon. Made hiking just perfect!

S1:E9 - Learning to Find RV Campgrounds in Colorado While Driving
It’s hard not to fall in love with a place like Crested Butte, Colorado. Regardless of the time of year, there is plenty to see and do in the small and somewhat “touristy” town. You won’t find a single chain restaurant and people in town leave their bikes unlocked everywhere they go. It's a quaint mountain town, locked somewhere between a fairy tale and a photo of how life in America used to be.
In this episode we do our best to find a place to camp as we leave Utah. Rather than drive backward where we knew there was BLM land on which to camp, we decided to poke our heads into Canyonland National Park to complete our brief tour of all 5 National Parks in Utah. Then we dusted off our feet of the red Utah dirt and drove on into Colorado. It was a long day, and it shows in us. But we were glad to enter yet another new state in search of other adventure!
We stayed briefly in the town of Delta while we collected ourselves from our last, long day in Utah. Arriving on Friday we managed to get the last campsite in the last RV park in town. But that also gave us an opportunity to attend our first drive-in movie! In Delta we flipped a coin as to whether to explore Maroon Bells near Aspen or Crested Butte. We settled on Crested Butte, and when we arrived in the small town we were grateful that we did!
We were early in the season so we found that we were the only ones at the Oh-Be-Joyful campground on BLM land at the edge of town. From there, we made daily excursions in and around the quaint mountain town. Whether you visit Crested Butte to hike, bike or whitewater raft in the summer or ski or snowboard in the winter, there is no shortage of outdoor activity. The happiest people we met thus far on our journey were in Crested Butte. And there were plenty of reasons why.

HOW TO: Hook Up an RV
Connecting an RV to full hookups at an RV park or campground isn't too difficult, but if you've never done it before, this quick tutorial will get you started. Even if you've been RVing for years, you might pick up a quick tip or two to improve your routine.

For example, do you spray disinfectant on your campsite's water spigot before you connect your water hose? If not, think about one of the last things you do when disconnecting... you rinse out your sewer hose. Of course that means the RVer who used your site last night probably did the same thing. Think about that for a second, and if you don't already keep a can of Lysol in your water compartment, you'll probably get one pretty quick. ;-)
We love boondocking (camping without RV hook-ups), taking full advantage of our ability to live comfortably off the grid for extended periods. But there's something wonderful about taking a regular shower vs a navy shower, microwaving dinner without firing up the generator and watching TV late at night without depleting your house batteries.
These luxuries require hooking up in a campground. When it comes time to connect to water, sewer and electric, following a few standard procedures can make your stay a better one.
