EXPLORING KUWAIT TOWERS | KUWAIT CITY | #BleTravels
Kuwait Towers: History, Art, Architecture and Eternity
Kuwait Towers is a group of three slender towers in Kuwait City, standing on a promontory into the Persian Gulf. They were officially inaugurated on 26 February 1977 and are rated as a landmark and symbol of modern Kuwait.
The main tower is 187 meters high and carries two spheres. The lower sphere holds in its bottom half a water tank of 4,500 cubic meters and in its upper half a restaurant for 90 persons, a café, a lounge and a reception hall. The upper sphere which rises to 123 meters above the sea level and completes a full turn every 30 minutes.
The second tower is 147 meters high and serves as a water tower. The third tower houses equipment to control the flow of electricity and illuminates the two larger towers. The towers hold 9,000 cubic meters of water altogether.
Kuwait Towers were designed by the Danish architect Malene Björn as part of a water distribution project, run by the Swedish engineering companyVBB since 1997. Chief architect of the company Sune Lindström erected five groups of his typical mushroom water towers, the Kuwait Water Towers, but the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed, wanted a more attractive design for the sixth site. Out of ten different designs, three were presented to the Amir, who chose this one.
Projecting ofKuwait Towers was done by VBB, who commissioned the actual building task to the Energoprojekt Companyof Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
The towers were built in reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete. They cost 4,700,000 KD which is around 16,540,000 USD. Building was executed in 1971-1976 and the main tower was opened to the publicon 1 March 1979.
According tothe architect, the Kuwait Tower group refers to ideals of humanity andtechnology, symbolized by the globe and the rocket. Kuwait Towers were, together with theKuwait Water Towers, awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (1980 Cycle).
During the First Gulf War 1990-1991,then opened to public once again after amendments. In 2012, the towers wereclosed for extra amendments and didn’t open yet till this day but still sparkleall the way as you pass by them on the Arabian Gulf road.

Highway of Death Iraqi Army Armed Retreat from Kuwait 1991
The Highway of Death refers to a road between Kuwait and Basra on which retreating units of the Iraqi army as well as Iraqi civilians were attacked and destroyed by American aircraft and ground forces during the United Nations Coalition offensive in the Gulf War, on the night of February 26-February 27, 1991, resulting in the destruction of hundreds of vehicles and the deaths of an unknown and disputed number of Iraqi soldiers and civilians. The scenes of carnage on the road are some of the most recognizable images of the war. According to Elaine Sciolino of the New York Times, the images suggested a turkey shoot and contributed to the war's resolution soon afterwards.
American attacks were conducted on two different roads: some 1,400-2,000 vehicles hit on the main Highway 80 north of Al Jahra (the actual Highway of Death) and, few days later, another 400-700 or so on the much-less known coastal road to Basra.
On the main highway, aircraft bombed the front and rear of the massive vehicle column of Iraqi Regular Army, trapping the convoy, and leaving sitting targets for later airstrikes. When visited by journalists the main highway had been reduced to a long uninterrupted line of destroyed, damaged, and abandoned vehicles, sometimes called the Mile of Death. The wreckage predominantly consisted of stolen civilian vehicles (such as cars, trucks, and buses) which were manned by Iraqi conscripts and the Palestinian fighters, accompanied by their family members fleeing the advancing Coalition forces.

KUWAIT: US TROOPS IN KUWAIT UPDATE 2
English/Nat
More U-S soldiers look set to join colleagues already in the deserts of Kuwait after the Kuwaiti government granted an American request to deploy extra troops on its territory.
The permission, given on Monday, came later than had been expected, amid speculation that the emirate was under pressure from Arab nations to refuse.
For the soldiers already on the ground in Kuwait, the major enemies so far are the heat, the wind and the sand.
Just 20 kilometres from Kuwait's border with Iraq, these U-S soldiers are getting used to life in the desert.
The scarves and goggles, netting and mesh aren't to keep out enemies from Baghdad, they are the soldiers' first line of defence against enemy number one -- the sand.
SOUNDBITE:
Oh yeah the sand is going to get in to anything you have, no matter if you zip it up, lock it up - that sand is always going to find its way through. The best thing we can do is make ourselves a shelter where we can get out of that sand for a couple of hours out of the day when we're not working. We trying to set up this net and put ponchos around it to try and block it from the sand. Now the sand it still going to get in but it won't get in as fast as if you didn't have anything at all so every 20 - 25 minutes you dump all the sand off and sit back down.

The task force consists of three manoeuvre battalions, an engineering battalion and a forward support battalion.
Coming from a hot summer in Fort Hood Texas, the heat is less of a problem for these troops.
SOUNDBITE:
The wind has picked up over the past couple of days but it's hot just like it is back in Fort Hood, not too bad to adapt.
SUPER CAPTION: Lt Judith Splinter /Soldier
Whipped off the endless desert dunes into stinging, choking clouds, the sand can be dangerous.
A military nurse is prepared for collapsed airways.
SOUNDBITE:
Curious stuff, someone gets a collapsed airway for any reason this gets inserted, the guy'll be unconscious, it'll get inserted back down there so that he can breathe through right here.
SUPER CAPTION: Military Nurse
Task Force 1-9 is based at the tactical assembly area, 20 kms from the Iraqi Border.

10. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Abdullah Massad, Kuwaiti resident:
Kuwait is in safe hands. Now we feel even safer and we hope it will stay that way.
11. Various soldiers on street
STORYLINE:
Special police forces traversed Kuwait city in armoured vehicles on Saturday in a test run of a plan to beef up security for a possible war on neighboring Iraq.
Kuwait could become a launch pad for the war if U.S. President George W. Bush decides to use force to disarm Iraq from its alleged weapons of mass destruction.
Some 30,000 American troops are now based in this Gulf state - a third of the total buildup in the region.
Kuwaiti Interior Minister Sheik Mohammed Khaled Al Sabah said earlier this week that Kuwait would deploy a joint force of police, army and National Guards to patrol the streets and guard vital installations.
Their state of alert will be upgraded gradually, reaching the highest level if a war starts.
Civil Defense has been testing sirens, conducting evacuation drills and directing Kuwaitis to prepare a sealed room in every home.
Kuwaiti authorities have also told residents to carry identification on them at all times.
The increased security also comes shortly after the shooting of two U.S civilians on January 21. One of the men died in the attack, and the other was wounded.
A Kuwaiti man was arrested for the attack.
The shootings prompted the U.S. State Department to strongly urge American private citizens to consider departing Kuwait.
Earlier this week, it said it is authorizing the departure of family members and non-essential US embassy personnel from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
The State Department statement on Kuwait said private American citizens in the country should evaluate rigorously their own security situation and are strongly urged to consider departing.
