What You Can Do in Wayanad - Kerala, India
Every time Amala Menon visits the villages of Wayanad in Kerala, India, she gets a surge of pride.
“These are villages that God created in the best way possible,” she says.
In spring, the hills are covered with luscious tropical foliage, the paddy fields sparkle emerald green, you hear and see birds in their multitude; the abundance can stop you in your tracks.
But Amala noticed that the villagers themselves didn’t value what they had. Many perceived city life to be better.
She saw an opportunity - empower the villagers within their own ecosystems. Show them the value of what they have and enable them to earn income from it.
Amala started SaveAGram (means Save A Village) which invites people to experience village life, first-hand with a local family.
In Wayanad, your hosts are the Nambiar family.
Kesavan - an accomplished tabla player - inherited the home from his ancestors.
His son Rijesh and his wife Souwmya run the farm and are happy for guests to take part in any of the activities.
Sumathi, Kesavan’s wife, is the magician. Using produce picked from their farm, often on the day it’s cooked, she creates ethnic dishes specific only to the region from recipes handed down by her mother. There’s all sorts of rotis (Indian breads), chutneys, curries, vegetable medleys cooked over a wood-fired stove.
There is a lot more to do in the area - treks into the forest led by a local guide, visits to the unique temples, and volunteering time at a local school that provides free food and education to children of tribal communities.
SaveAGram’s concept is to create a ripple of benefit through the community, through experiences that only a local can give you.
SaveAGram also offers a homestay in the village of Gaja in Garhwal, Uttarakhand which is at the foothills of the Himalayas.

Thamarassery churam | Ghat Pass wayanad | Kerala tourism
The ghat pass (churam) begins from Adivaram (downhills), while coming from Kozhikkode and ends at Lakkidi, the beginning of Wayanad district.
There is a view point at the top of the ghat pass just after the 9th hairpin and before reaching Lakkidi. You can stop at this place and enjoy the beautiful view of the serpentine roads through the hills.
There are 9 hairpin curves, which are numbered from 1 to 9, starting from the first one at the downhills. The adventurous hairpin roads through the ghat pass will hold you spell bound. The amazing view of serpentine roads of the ghat pass from the view point located at the 9th hairpin, is really spectacular.
The entire ghat road is about 12 km and you would take about 30 to 45 minutes to cover this distance. Presence of fog may further slow down your journey. The best place to stop by is the view point at the top of the churam, near Lakkidi. Avoid stopping in any other places especially on the hairpin curves to avoid any accidents.

WAYANAD | KERALA | 10 BEST PLACES TO VISIT | TOURIST PLACES | GOD'S OWN COUNTRY |Wanderlust On Wheel
Can’t control my adrenaline rush once Long weekend is around the corner and this time my drive was to GOD’S OWN COUNTRY WAYANAD, KERALA. It was a 3 days trip covering some odd 1100kms.
Avoiding the regular route from Bangalore we went via NAGARHOLE NATIONAL PARK, Nalkeri Forest. As heard the forest was dense, exquisite, jam-packed with greenery & wild-life and to our surprise negligible traffic. With a long walk n few climbing of stairways EDAKKAL CAVES was the first place to visit. Then moved ahead to KALPETTA and called off d day as it grew dark.
2nd day visiting PHANTOM ROCK we headed for NEELIMALA VIEWPOINT. The 4X4 ferocious muddy off-road uphill drive to the view point is not for weak hearts but it was the superlative adventurous part of our trip. The beautiful MEENMUTTY FALLS can be viewed from the hill top. Moving ahead till the edge of the hill was spine-tingling to see Mother Nature in her ravishing attire. The view from there was hypnotising and we were above the clouds without an Air-plane. The next points was less known but beautiful KANTHAPARA WATERFALLS, Meppadi and then visited the spectacular SOOCHIPARA WATERFALLS. Last part of the day was Ghats section sun set view form LAKKIDI VIEW POINT.
Day 3 was started by visiting BANASURA SAGAR DAM and thereafter with a thrilling ghat section drive traveled to splashy THUSHARAGIRI WATERFALL, in Kozhikode district which was our last point. Finally bidding adieu to picturesque WAYANAD we drive back to Bangalore through BERAMBADI STATE FOREST & witnessing a bunch of wild Tuskers was like dessert after a heavy meal.
