Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is an animal sanctuary in Wayanad, Kerala, India. It has an extent of 344.44 km2 with four ranges namely Sulthan Bathery, Muthanga, Kurichiat and Tholpetty. A variety of large wild animals such as Indian bison, elephant, deer and tiger are found there. There are also quite a few unusual birds in the sanctuary. In particular, peafowl tend to be very common in the area. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. It is bestowed with lush green forests and rich wildlife. This wildlife area houses some of the rare and endangered species of both flora and fauna.
Wayanad soochipara water falls near Puthumala (Wayanad, Kerala): In Pachakkaadu, where around 80 homes once stood, just ten remain. Pachakkaadu, the Malayalam word for ‘green forest’, is part of Puthumala village of Meppadi grama panchayat, in Wayanad.
Soochipara Falls also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is a three-tiered waterfall in Vellarimala, Wayanad, India. It is surrounded by deciduous, evergreen and montane forests. Locally referred to as Soochipara (Soochi meaning Needle and Para meaning Rock), the 15-20 minute drive from Meppadi to Sentinel Rock Waterfalls has views of a number of Wayanad's tea estates.[1] The Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is 200 metres (656 feet) and offers a cliff face that is used for rock climbing.[2] The water from Soochipara Falls[3] later joins Chulika River or popularly known as Chaliyar River after Velarimala Hills near Cherambadi (Tamil Nadu) in Kerala.
Once people reach the parking area, they have to pass through a security check at the entrance where they make sure you don't carry any plastic. It takes 10-15 minutes walk to the waterfalls and water flow is less during summer, which makes it easy to reach the rocks where water falls.
Wayanad is an Indian district in the north-east of Kerala state with administrative headquarters at the municipality of Kalpetta. It is set high on the Western Ghats with altitudes ranging from 700 to 2100 meters.[5] The district was formed on 1 November 1980 as the 12th district in Kerala by carving out areas from Kozhikode and Kannur districts. About 885.92 sq.km of area of the district is under forest.[6] Wayanad has three municipal towns—Kalpetta, Mananthavady and Sulthan Bathery. There are many indigenous tribals in this area.[7][8]
Wayanad district is bordered by Karnataka to north and north-east, Tamil Nadu to south-east, Malappuram to south, Kozhikode to south-west and Kannur to north-west.[9] Pulpally in Wayanad boasts of the only Lava Kusha Temple in Kerala and Vythiri has the only mirror temple in Kerala which is a Jain temple. The edicts and caves of Ambukuthi Mala and another evidence state that the place is as old as the beginning of the New Age Civilisation.[10]

Mayakshetra evolved into Mayanad and finally to Wayanad.[1] The Folk etymology of the word says it is a combination of Vayal (paddy field) and Naad (land), making it 'The Land of Paddy Fields'. Viral Tiger Videos Raise Concerns Over Human-Wildlife Coexistence In Wayanad| Mathrubhumi News
Kalpetta: Within the month four viral tiger videos claimed to have been shot in the forest areas in and around Wayanad have spread alarm among forest officials and conservationists for its damage potential. While two are from the district, the others are from Rajiv Gandhi national park in Karnataka. The videos create a false impression among public that the forests here are teeming with tigers. The videos are accompanied by misleading captions casting them as dangerous man-eaters; as the one with this legend: ‘Bavaliyil kaduva kootam ira thedan irangiyappol’ {A pack of tigers hunting prey at Bavali} when the fact was that it was a mother and its three sub-adult offspring! The concerns are valid as in the past inflamed crowds have resorted to blocking roads and calling hartals and turning against forest officials on the basis of rumours or scaremongering. While it is natural to spot a tiger near a forest road cutting through the core of a tiger habitat, Adv. Sreejith Perumana raises the obvious question as to who is the trespasser, since all the videos have been shot intruding into tiger territory. The videos can fuel fear and adversely affect the human-wildlife coexistence in a landscape like Wayanad where forests are interspaced with densely populated human habitations.
