Phetchabun, Thailand the Top Things To Do
Owing to its relatively cool climate, fresh air and Alpine terrain, Phetchabun is known as the ‘Thai Alps’ or ‘little Switzerland’. The province borders the North, Central and Northeast regions of Thailand and makes a worthwhile stopping off point when passing from one region to the next.
Once notorious for being the scene of a bitter communist insurgency from the 1960’s to 1980’s, the Khao Kho Mountains have since returned to peace and tranquility. Offering some of the best scenic views in the province the area has many points of interest to keep you occupied, from waterfalls, viewpoints and mountain bike trails to war memorials, a Weapons Museum and even a Royal Palace built for the current King, but for many simply driving along stunning stretches of steep winding roads proves to be the highlight of any trip to the area.
For a fascinating glimpse into the provinces’ ancient past, head to Si Thep Historical Park, which contains the ruins of the ancient town of Si Thep, built during the height of the Khmer empire around 1,000 years ago.
For anyone suffering from Temple fatigue we recommend a visit to the unique Wat Pha Sorn Kaew. Loosely translated as ‘Temple on a high glass cliff’, the Wat, just a few years old, is set on a 830 metre peak with a breathtaking backdrop of rugged mountains, and is adorned with over 5 million colourful mosaic tiles. The entire site is a real feast for the senses, and what the Temple may lack in history it more than makes up for in beauty.
Phetchabun is a province teeming with tourist potential, yet remains by in large under the radar of most travelers. But for those willing to take the time to explore, the province is a treasure trove of rich cultural heritage, ancient history and stunning misty mountains, ready to welcome you with open arms and that famous Thai smile.

Khao Kho, Phetchabun Trip
Here are some videos before I ran out of memory on our trip at Khao Kho, Phetchabun.
Shot with Mobius camera 30fps, 1080P.
Khao Kho Sneak
Kao Kho is not so much known for western tourists but this nice mountain country is very popular to the Thai people. So, every year at new years eve the region of Kao Kho becomes a huge traffic jam. Good if you know a secret way to the pagoda of Kanchanapisek a national sanctuary.
khao Kho Phukaew Adventure,(Phetchabun Province)
Khao Kho is made up of mountain ranges to northwest of town about 1,174 metres above mean sea level covered in the main by deciduous plants. Very cold during November-February, it once was the base room which communist insurgents conducted their struggles against the authorities during 1968-1982. Today it is accessible via two routes; off Highway No. 12 (Phitsanulok - Lom Sak) at Ban Camp Son with a further distance of 30 kilometres of off highway No. 21 at Ban Na Ngua, about 13 kilometres from town with a further distance of 30 kilometres. Both routes wind through considerably steep terrain. Interesting places include various viewing points, remains of communist bases and buildings, war memorial, arms museum, a Chedi containing Holy Relic and the Si Dit waterfall.
Accommodation at Khao Kho: There is a large number of accommodation to be chosen. Most of them will be in Thung Samo Sub-district and Camp Son, approximately 30 kilometres from the attractions on Khao Kho. The nearest one is the Cavalry Guesthouse at Km. 28 on Highway 2196, 28th Cavalry Division and bungalows for accompanying persons near the Khao Kho Palace and Khao Ya. Moreover, there are many resorts by the route ascending to Khao Kho.

A strategic point in World War II. Learn about the Thai-Japanese alliance in northern Thailand. A fascinating glimpse into that period captured in this little known war museum in Mae Hong Son.

Koh Tang: Site of the Last Battle of the Vietnam War
On May 15, 1975 American Marines stormed the beaches of a remote island in the Gulf of Thailand called Koh Tang to perform a rescue mission. However, due to intelligence failures and other factors, 41 American servicemembers died that day or were missing in what would be regarded as the last battle of the Vietnam War. At least three Marines were left behind to be executed by communist Khmer Rouge forces. Today, the island remains much as it did that day and is still home to Cambodian military forces, however, resort construction is encroaching on potential burial sites, which has distressed survivors of the battle and the families of the lost alike. They say time is running out to bring the fallen home, and that the American government needs to end their secrecy about the operation and its aftermath.
