The Weardale Railway is a heritage line which runs from Bishop Auckland in County Durham to Stanhope in Weardale towards the North Pennines.
Infrastructure considerations have prevented special trains running from the national network on to the Weardale Railway in recent years but a tour from London to Stanhope with the bonus of a pause at Shildon (home of the National Railway Museum’s northern outbase ‘Locomotion’) was scheduled and was captured on video on May 11th, 2019 near Frosterley and Wolsingham as the Class 66 Pullman spectacular is shown as it passes through Holebeck and Kingfisher caravan sites heading towards Frosterley.
Hopefully the first of many visits!

Bishop Auckland West Station to Stanhope Station using the Class 141 DMU, Railway, via Wolsingham & Frosterley Stations. The journey continues further along the Dale to the historic market town of Stanhope the capital of Weardale.

23rd May 2010 11:40: The first day of the new community service extending the Weardale railway to Bishop Auckland. This is the 2nd train of the day from Stanhope to Bishop Auckland, using their class 141 DMU.

Weardale Cowshill & Lanehead
An interesting little flight in Weardale I've been waiting to do for a while.
The flight shows the flooded Quarry at Cowshill and further up the Wear valley to Lanehead with its wonderful five arched viaduct.
I dived Cowshill quarry years ago and interestingly the bottom lies deep below the level of the river Wear which runs right next to it.
Its a very dangerous quarry to dive as the visibility is always poor due to dumping. When diving through the gloom I discovered, nearly to my peril, the bottom was littered with rusty barbed wire fencing, old cars, vans and farming machinery, where entanglement was very difficult to avoid.

Weardale Railway, 22 May 2010, at Bishop Auckland West station, County Durham, UK. The speaker is The Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove, Dean of Durham Cathedral, and Weardale Railway is represented by Ed Ellis, president of British American Railway Services and Iowa Pacific Holdings. The occasion is a special train to commemorate reopening of the line between Bishop Auckland and Stanhope, and the inauguration of regularly-scheduled community rail passenger service connecting with the UK national network. Scheduled passenger service ended on this route as early as 1953, and the line was closed for all service by British Rail in 1993.

Stanhope (pronounced in the regional dialect Stanup or Stan'ope) is a small market town in County Durham, in England. It is situated on the River Wear between Eastgate and Frosterley on the north east side of Weardale. The A689 trans-Pennine road meets the B6278 road from Barnard Castle to Shotley Bridge here.
The civil parish of Stanhope has a population of 4,519 in 2001, and also includes Rookhope, Westgate, St John's Chapel, Ireshopeburn, Wearhead, Cowshill, Cornriggs, Eastgate, Frosterley all on the A689 road, along with Crawleyside, Hill End and White Kirkley. The parish was formerly much larger, with an area of 221 km². It shares some land in common with the neighbouring Wolsingham civil parish.
Stanhope is surrounded by moorland in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) - the second largest of the current 40 AONBs in England and Wales.
Stanhope is also the current terminus of the Weardale Railway. However Trains do no longer run regularly to Frosterley and Wolsingham because of lack of income. Features of interest include a petrified tree stump in the churchyard, the Durham Dales Centre which incorporates a tea room, tourist information and craft shops, a ford with stepping stones for pedestrians, the eighteenth century Stanhope Castle in the centre of the town stands on the possible site of a medieval castle.

E55012 running on the Weardale Railway on Mothers Day
E55012 was running on the Weardale Railway as part of the Mothers Day event at which I helped out at, helping run the model railway. It was a hot day and you see E55012 running out of Stanhope to Wolsingham and back with people who then have lunch. The final clip if of E55012 leaving Stanhope with the last few people, dropping them off and then moving to the depot to end the event. 31465 was also there, but for static display as they moved the 31 and the Polar Express into the loop so the main platform was free for the class 122.
