Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower II ship are major attractions in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Authentic yet entertaining the two are links to our past and the 102 passengers that survived the journey across stormy seas.
During the journey the bad storms of the North Atlantic forced the crew to take down the sails and just let the winds blow the ship wherever it wanted. During one brutal storm one of the Mayflower main beams cracked and the sailors where convinced they'd have to turn back.
But the journey continued and because of it the world was forever changed.
No, this is not going to be a history lesson, but the first of two articles about two unique experiences of US history you can have during your New England vacations.
This first article covers the area of Plymouth Plantation, and the second in the series covers Sturbridge Village.
The Mayflower voyage of 1620 took 66 days after leaving Plymouth, England on September 6, and anchoring in present day Provincetown harbor in Cape Cod on November 11, 1620. Miraculously only one passenger died on the voyage.
The Pilgrims decided Cape Cod was not a suitable place for a settlement, and forced north because of the weather and dangerous shoals south of Cape Cod, the pilgrims finally came ashore in late November in present day Plymouth center.
That first winter at Plimoth Plantation decimated the settlers due to cold and disease. Of the 102 that came ashore only 52 were left in the spring.
The native Wampanoag men showed the survivors how to plant corn and in October 1621 the Pilgrims celebrated their first harvest at Plymouth Plantation. Later generations would recognize the significance of the harvest by setting aside a special day that we now call Thanksgiving. And this day, more than any other in our calendar, binds every American to that fateful voyage in 1620.
And you can relive and feel this spirit and the early days of settlement at Plimoth Plantation and Mayflower II replica. Both located in the coastal town of Plymouth, a city about 40 miles south of Boston and an easy ride on Route 3 south.
Plymouth Plantation is a 1627 Pilgrim authentic village a few miles outside of the city but close to the highway and well sign-posted.
An orientation movie and collection of artifacts greet you at the Henry Hornblower Visitor Center. Plimoth plantation itself is a loop tour with two primary sites, the 1627 Pilgrim Village and the Hobbamock's (Wampanoag) Homesite. The stroll from the museum down to the main village passes by a craft center and crop fields.
The village itself is full of buildings and gardens. Everything is plain and productive, and authentic.
The people of the village dress, talk, and act, as best we know they would've on the original Plymouth Plantation. But that doesn't mean they are aloof or communicate in riddles or a strange tongue. Their aim is to educate and entertain but still remain true to the era. I've always found they are engaging and excellent in this balance.
The stroll out of the village along the Eel River walk takes you to the Native people homesite.
As I said earlier, the Pilgrims would not have survived the first year had it not been for help from the Native Peoples. They taught them about the region and it's agriculture and the resources of the land, and how to thrive.
This special area is a home for an extended family not another village. It honors the importance and affinity the Native People have in this region.
Take time to appreciate the skills of weaving and tanning practiced at the site, and the use of fire for burning out boats. Go inside one of the houses and notice the materials and bindings used for construction.
The inhabitants here do not role-play so feel free to discuss modern day subjects with them.
And now... linger for a while longer at Plymouth Plantation, and rest back at the visitor center, or purchase that craft you saw at the store earlier. And then when you're ready to continue, leave Plimoth Plantation and head for town and the Mayflower II replica.
Mayflower II is docked on State Pier on Water Street. Meter parking is available along the waterfront. .
You'll think it a small ship.
Imagine the vast expanse of the North Atlantic at times wild and unforgiving. A 2,760-mile trip in a ship that leaked and creaked at an agonizing speed of 2 mph!

Celebrating the East Building Twentieth-Century Art Series, Part 14: Modern Sculpture
David Gariff, senior lecturer, National Gallery of Art. The East Building of the National Gallery of Art houses an impressive collection of modern sculptures displayed throughout its many levels. Henry Moore’s Knife Edge Mirror Two Piece, Anthony Caro’s National Gallery Ledge Piece, and the enormous mobile, Untitled, by Alexander Calder were commissioned for the opening of the building in 1978 and are prominently displayed at the entrance and in the atrium. Other large-scale works by Max Ernst, Andy Goldsworthy, Isamu Noguchi, Richard Serra, and David Smith are also found in the atrium. Throughout the upstairs galleries one can trace the history of 20th-century sculpture in parallel with the history of 20th-century painting. As part of the series Celebrating the East Building: 20th-Century Art, senior lecturer David Gariff leads a tour of the Gallery’s modern sculptures in this lecture presented on August 30, 2018, at the National Gallery of Art.

(English, German, Polish, Spanish & Swedish Subtitles now available)
The film is available on DVD and Blu Ray from our official website worldwide in the following languages:
English, Swedish, Spanish, German & Polish.
FUTURE MY LOVE is a unique love story challenging our collective and personal utopias in search of freedom.
At the brink of losing the idealistic love of her life, filmmaker Maja Borg takes us on a poetic road trip through the financial collapse, exploring a radically different economic and social model proposed by 95-year-old futurist Jacque Fresco. How much freedom are we prepared to give to the ones we love? And how much responsibility are we ready to take for our society?
Carefully weaving a texture of archive footage, black and white Super 8 film, and colour HD, Borg poignantly depicts the universal struggle between our heads and hearts in times of big change.

A reason that the furniture and the boxes and virtually every piece of household good that the Shakers made, from a humble dustpan to the most beautiful credenza, was so perfect, is because they believed that work was an important part of their spiritual life, an important part of prayer, if you will. And it was important to devote yourself fully to the making of those household objects, the most humble to the most high and mighty, as it was in religious ceremonies.
15. Medium shot boxes in process
16. Close shot completed boxes
17. Medium shot Steve Griselli making boxes in his workshop
18. SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Griselli, Master Boxmaker of the Hancock Shaker Village
The wooden box business was very important in colonial America, before the mass production of sheet metal, before plastic of course. Household dry goods were in a wooden box of some kind. What the old Shakers did, they just made a better wooden box, for an existing marketplace.
19. Close shot Griselli lifts wooden panel out of metal boiling box
20. Close shot Griselli winds wood around oval mold
21. SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Griselli, Master Boxmaker of the Hancock Shaker Village
I had been a cabinetmaker for many years, doing furniture. But something about the boxes, I don't know what it is - but it became a passion to learn as much as I possibly could about this craft. I wanted to be, I wanted to be a technical virtuoso at this business. I wanted to know everything I could find out about this. And I'm not finished yet, but I'm on the way.
22. Medium shot boxes inside built-in cabinet
23. Medium shot coat rack, another classic Shaker element
24. Wide shot room with bowls and glassware
25. Tilt down herb labels
26. Tilt down bowls of dried beans and spices

29. Close shot cream mixer
30. Medium shot mother and child mixing cream to make butter
31. Close shot boy smiling
32. SOUNDBITE (English) Agathe Naton, visitor, standing with husband Olivier
It's always interesting to learn about American culture and find something that's 200 years old. And it's also very nice, very peaceful, it's very good for the children, because they can experience how people lived at the time.
33. Medium shot desk
34. Pan left bedroom
35. Wide shot women's coats
36. Close shot dresser
37. Tilt up banister
38. Medium shot top floor with visitors
39. Medium shot entrance to Shaker Workshops furniture store
40. Tilt down Louise MacGuire, retail manager for Shaker Workshops
41. Medium shot MacGuire talking on the phone
42. SOUNDBITE ( English) MacGuire
I guess the basic thing that you can say about Shaker design is that it is timeless. It goes with antiques, it stands on its own, it can be mixed with contemporary pieces and it always looks great.
43. Pan right furniture showroom
44. Medium shot rolls of ribbon for chair seats
45. Close shot grandfather clock
LEADIN
The Shaker religion has its roots in the Quaker movement in mid seventeenth century England.

'Political pottery' sees Brexit egg cups and Donald Trump jugs +REPLAY+
(29 Mar 2018) LEAD IN
Pottery has been used to mark historical moments for centuries - and now UK potters are turning clay into everything from Brexit to Donald Trump
And with the upcoming marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the factories are particularly busy preparing the latest range of Royal Wedding china.
STORY-LINE
The distinctive blue and white of the Willow pattern - a Chinese inspired design developed by English ceramic artists and found on tableware throughout the world.
However look closer at this particular china and you may notice a few subtle differences. In amongst the tranquil birds and weeping willows you'll see storm clouds brewing over Britain, Westminster's Big Ben falling over and the 12 stars of the EU flag reconfiguring.
This is what the designer Harriet Coles is calling Brexit Ware - a range of pottery she created following Britain's referendum on membership of the EU which resulted in the decision to leave.
At the end when the vote came through my whole world turned upside down and I had to think it through. And I suppose it's a kind of art therapy. I'm coming to terms with the whole process, she says.
Coles says that if you go into any regional museum in Britain you'll find 'political pottery' poking fun at figures such as Napoleon or celebrating events such as the end of the Crimean war. So Brexit felt like another significant point in British history which needed to be marked.
Within her Willow pattern plate she's created images such as a refugee with a child in an enclosure south of Calais, German Chancellor Angela Merkel watching over events and Westminster being shaken by the result of the referendum.
There were reports of MPs clustered in groups in the corridors of Westminster straight after the vote and it felt to me as if, right at the heart of politics Big Ben had taken a bash, so I painted it fallen over, Coles explains.
Despite being open about her fears regarding Brexit, not least for its impact on the pottery industry, there's also plenty of humour behind Coles' Brexit Ware. These tongue in cheek egg cups, decorated with Hard Brexit and Soft Brexit, were so popular that 400 sold in less than 4 weeks when they were first released.
The Willow pattern plate, was looking at the whole thing and the experience, it was a bit of an outpouring of emotion, but the egg cups are just sort of: 'Oh goodness me this is a long run isn't it, let's have a good old giggle', says Coles.
Although Coles is based in Buckinghamshire, her Brexit Ware is manufactured in Stoke-on-Trent, widely regarded as the home of British pottery. Today she's displaying her works in the city's Spode Heritage Centre, whose 'Blue Room' of Willow pattern works provided her inspiration for Brexit Ware and whose staff act as Cole's consultants.
However the decorating and firing process takes place at nearby ceramic printers and decorators Edwards & Lockett.
But Brexit isn't the only major historical moment being marked at this business. Edwards & Lockett are currently putting the finishing touches to a range of mugs and plates to commemorate the upcoming royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
We've got a lot of interest from some pretty major companies up and down the country and indeed from abroad who are very interested in commemorative ware for it, explains company director David Lockett.
It does keep the industry buoyant and keeps places like this going, he adds.
He's an ideal choice to do. Basically whether you love him or hate him someone always buys these kinds of things, explains the company's painter, Daniel Smith.
We do all the political pieces like the Prime Ministers, we do a series of mini Prime Ministers, and we sell those in the House of Commons, says Smith.

During your Mayflower tour you'll meet passengers on the ship role-playing for you. You'll get to see the passenger's cramped quarters and the captain's spacious cabin. But most of all you'll be cast back in time.
And if you close your eyes and listen to the gulls overhead maybe you'll hear the shouts of a sailor as he sights landfall and one journey's end... and the start of another.

Virtual Tour #10(!!) - Birmingham, Paddleboats, Gary Nock
We're ten episodes in, which means we're over halfway to the longevity of My So-Called Life!
I couldn't sleep all night the night before filming this episode, so come enjoy my inability to string together sentences in my native tongue.
We're in Birmingham, England for the Tenth Showstravaganza, and this one has it all: an extended remix of the theme song, Gary Nock (not-exactly-)live from London, another premier of one of the new songs, A BABY, and the most confusing song ever.
NOTE: All Pledgers will receive an mp3 of this version of the Virtual Tour theme song, and yes, that is the only way to get it unless you cheat.
PADDLEBOATS LYRICS:
I never let you in until you needed out and then I realized these walls that I'd let build themselves out of thin doubt had turned the deadbolts inside out so I couldn't even chase you like I needed to.
I'm so sorry that I shut you out; please let me make this heart a home again
So I've thrown all of the furniture out in the lawn in case you're ever driving by; I want to try to prove to you I've turned my insides out again: I took the doors and windows off the hinges so you can come right in.
This doorway's dark without your shadow, but the only thing I'm letting in is rain, rain, rain
This mattress is a paddleboat; when I try to ride alone I float in circles for an hour and then give up and I go medicate myself until I pass out on the front lawn or the floor, and I come visit you.
You always haunt my dreams a little bit, but I love to see you any way I can.
So every morning I'm in pain, whether from spirits or from ghosts (or both), and I wonder if I found you in whatever paddleboat you're in with him these days (I just want to haunt your dreams a little bit, too).
I know this wound won't ever heal if I keep picking it, but it's all that's left of you.
So I keep the front door open to whoever wanders in, but she don't balance out this bed, so I don't write her name in pen; she's just a melody that doesn't match the chords you wrote (but I just can't stop picking them).
It's like a one-sided equation with an answer that I know won't ever grace these sheets again.
I'm just a one-sided equation with an answer that I know won't ever grace these sheets again
LYRICS TO THE VIRTUAL TOUR RAP:
I got ten episodes all over the road
Palmdale, California to the Delaware coast
So like, 90 more shows til syndication
But I don't have the catalogue, or the patience
So - maybe I can be appreciated
For one season, breezin' all around the nation, like
Freaks and Geeks with the storyline hanging
While a former honor student goes on tour
And we hate that it's cancelled
but somehow we find the strength to make it
I'm way off subject! Back to basics
(Welcome to the Virtual Tour)
I got a map in the back and a mask I stole
(Welcome to the Virtual Tour)
I'm just trying to get my music in the record store
(Welcome to the Virtual Tour)
And I'd like to pay the band (Hey, band. Hi guys!)
(Welcome to the Virtual Tour)
Oh, another show I miss is Firefly

Scooter Braun: The Life of an Entertainment Power Player | Talks at Google
Scooter Braun is one of the entertainment industry’s biggest entrepreneurs and innovators and the founder of SB Projects, a diversified entertainment and media company with ventures at the intersection of music, film, television, technology, brands, culture and social good. Today, Braun has a roster of the top pop culture icons under his management, record label, and publishing companies that include Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Ariana Grande, Usher, Karlie Kloss, Tori Kelly, Carly Rae Jepsen, The Black Eyed Peas, and Martin Garrix to name a few.
Braun has broken more new artists than any other music executive in the last decade and now has expanded his reach by establishing a fund, which invests in some of the largest management, media, and rights companies in the industry. SB Projects houses a film and television production division which led to Braun making waves in the industry with his first documentary film, Never Say Never. SB Projects also continues to impact new verticals under its tech incubator, Silent Labs, which holds investments in Uber, Spotify, Songza, Casper, Waze, and Pinterest among others.
As Braun continues to expand SB Projects, he remains committed to the company’s founding philosophy of giving back and designs a philanthropic element for each new initiative. Braun serves as Chair of the Advisory Board of Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization that builds schools in developing countries. The organization has helped to build more than 400 schools in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He is also on the board of Fuck Cancer, an organization focused on prevention and early detection of cancer, which his wife Yael Braun co-founded. Braun, his clients, and his companies have – together – granted more wishes for Make-A-Wish than any other organization in the history of the foundation. In 2017, Braun proved to be the music industry’s ‘first-responder’ when he organized the One Love Manchester benefit concert and Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief telethon, within just months of one-another.
Braun lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two sons.
