Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
Weeks Bay is one of only 27 National Estuarine Research Reserves in the country and offers an exceptional opportunity for travelers to enjoy the educational materials of the interpretive center or take to the boardwalks and enjoy the environment firsthand.
Estuaries represent some of the most sensitive and ecologically important habitats on Earth. They provide sanctuary for many species of waterfowl, store nutrients for larval and juvenile marine life, and serve as breeding grounds for many desirable species of ocean fish. As one of the largest estuaries in the country, the Mobile Bay system is the foundation for the environmental beauty and diversity found along Alabama's Coastal Connection.
Pictures From The Past - Fairhope, Al

Fairhope was founded in November, 1894 on the site of former Alabama City as a utopian single tax colony by the Fairhope Industrial Association: a group of 28 followers of economist Henry George who had incorporated earlier that year in Des Moines, Iowa. Their corporate constitution explained their purpose in founding a new colony:
to establish and conduct a model community or colony, free from all forms of private monopoly, and to secure to its members therein equality of opportunity, the full reward of individual efforts, and the benefits of co-operation in matters of general concern.
In forming their demonstration project, they pooled their funds to purchase land at Stapleton's pasture on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay and then divided it into a number of long-term leaseholds. The corporation paid all governmental taxes from rents paid by the lessees, thus simulating a single-tax. The purpose of the single-tax colony was to eliminate disincentives for productive use of land and thereby retain the value of land for the community.
Fairhope Avenue was one of the properties on the 1910 version of the board game The Landlord's Game.
In 1907 educator Marietta Johnson founded the School for Organic Education in Fairhope. The school was praised in John Dewey's influential 1915 book Schools of Tomorrow. Dewey and Johnson were founding members of the Progressive Education Association.
Fairhope became a popular wintering spot for artists and intellectuals. Sherwood Anderson, Wharton Esherick, Carl Zigrosser, and Upton Sinclair were among its notable visitors.

The Fairhope Single-Tax Corporation still operates, with 1,800 leaseholds covering more than 4,000 acres (16 km2) in and around the current city of Fairhope. Despite the ideals of the corporation, the process of land speculation has propelled the transformation of Fairhope from utopian experiment to artist's and intellectual's colony, to boutique resort and affluent suburb of Mobile. In fact, some local residents refer to Fairhope as Carmel-by-the-Bay alluding to Carmel-by-the-Sea on the Monterey Peninsula in California.
For over 50 years, fishermen and residents of Fairhope have experienced the jubilee phenomenon. During a jubilee along the shores of Mobile Bay, some aquatic animals, including blue crabs, flounder, stingrays, and eels, come to the shallow water, such as around Fairhope, Alabama. At those times, it is possible to catch the fish, crabs, and other sealife near the water's edge.
A nearby attraction known as the Weeks Bay Nature Reserve is known for the many oaks, wildlife and pitcher plants along the elevated walkways through the swamp forest.
The Bell Building on the Faulkner State Community College campus currently houses the Marietta Johnson Museum and Fairhope Historical Museum.[4] Fairhope is currently in the process of building a historic museum that will be located in the near center of downtown where the city hall was once located.

59 Week's Bay Discovering Alabama
In recent decades, coastal Alabama has begun experiencing burgeoning growth and development and rapid population increase, with many consequences that threaten the health of some of the nation’s most biologically productive ecosystems, Alabama’s estuaries.’ In this program, Discovering Alabama host Dr. Doug Phillips canoes down Baldwin County’s Magnolia River for a return visit to one of Alabama’s best kept estuaries, Weeks Bay (originally featured among the series’ earliest shows thus drawing public attention to the natural values of this special estuary and helping win protective federal designation as a National Estuarine Reserve.) Host Dr. Doug Phillips examines troublesome changes and impacts affecting Weeks Bay today and talks with local leaders who discuss the rising potential for environmental decline throughout Alabama’s coastal area. MOUNT MITCHELL BALSAM NATURE TRAIL
Here's a short video of the beautiful Balsam Nature Trail on Mount Mitchell. Support my channel by shopping at my website. I will earn a small commission from each purchase. The link is
After taking some time to soak up the views, the hike backtracks from the summit on the paved trail. At .3 mile, the hike hangs a right at the signed trailhead of the Balsam Nature Trail, veering onto the unpaved trail and diving into the balsam fir forest.
The trail descends, hiking through a landscape of extraordinary, high-elevation varieties of plants. The elements near the summit are raw, dominated by wind, ice, snow and fog, and usually-cold temperatures (often 10-20 degrees lower than in nearby Asheville). Many plant varieties that thrive here near the summit are only found in northern states and Canada; informational signs along the trail educate on the forest’s unique plants and ecosystems.
The hike loops to the northeast at .55 mile, continuing to follow the Balsam Nature Trail. The hike arcs to the northwest, beginning a short, moderate climb back toward the mountain’s summit. Wildflowers and fern stretch to reach sunlight under the dense evergreen tree canopy.

America's Byways Survey Results
America's Byways teamed up with Goodyear for a national survey to find out how many people are hitting the roads this fall and what they're looking for in a fall trip. Unlike a summer road trip which is all about the destination, fall getaway trips are about the experience as a whole, and the scenic comfort of the drive itself.
Missouri Bluffs // Preserve This Place
The land that stretches west along the Missouri River past Highway 40 remains largely rural and undeveloped. Driving Highway 94 or riding the Katy Trail in that area feels much like a drive or ride deep in the Ozarks, not 5 minutes from suburban St. Charles. This area provides hiking, biking and sightseeing that are among the best in Missouri. It has retained that feel for decades because of the land protection provided by creation of the Busch and Weldon Spring Conservation Areas in the late 1940s.
The Missouri Bluffs development will change all of this.
The current housing plan shows information about a large development proposed on this area that is currently owned by the University of Missouri. This land is a gateway to the Katy Trail and features a scenic spur trail that meanders through old growth forests, past a clear stream and is close to the August A. Busch Memorial and Weldon Spring conservation areas, just west of Chesterfield.
With the efforts of the Katy Land Trust and Magnificent Missouri, everyone who loves the Katy Trail, Missouri River, clear streams, healthy forests and the Missouri countryside should join the fight. We believe that the scale and the location of the project are cause for questions regarding the impact on the river bluffs from the perspective of plant and wildlife habitat, aesthetics and traffic.
