Not the Great Wall, not the Terracotta Warriors, but an ancient fort in Gansu China !
What we have here is an ancient fort (Buzi 堡子 in Chinese) - in Tongwei City, Gansu Province. Buzi in this area of China date from approximately a couple thousand years old (Qin or Han dynasty) to a few hundred years old (Song or Ming dynasty). In fact, they were actually used in more recent times during the Sino-Japanese war also. As Wikipedia mentions ... the combined defence line of forts has been compared to the Great Wall of China. However, these days most stand empty and unused, and remain simply as ghostly remains of their distant pasts.
The fort you see here is very strategically positioned, and in fact is the largest and thus main fort in amongst 5 or 6 others that overlook the valley down below. You'll see me zooming in to two of the smaller forts in the first 35 seconds. There was definitely a strong defensive presence in place here once upon a time. Also of great interest is the little secret cave which I enter from the 3 min mark - I assume it was a storage area for weapons or supplies.
The problem is I can't seem to find a name or any information for this fort, nor do I have any knowledge of dating things like this, PLUS there are around 1400 of these tombs in this area in Gansu and from what I can tell many of them remain anonymous. I'm going to guess this fort is from the Ming Dynasty.

Gaochang
Here from my epic journey on the silk route in 2012/13 is my look at Gaochang in China. It was one of the highlights for me of the trip, I am a bit into ancient sites, I have a great connection with them, and I don't know why?
Anyway I hope you get a taste for what out there and how the Chinese are trying to restore it!
Located 30 kilometers southeast of Turpan City, Gaochang, is an ancient city built on the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert and to the south of the Flaming Mountains. Built in the 1st century BC, Gaochang, was an important area along the Silk Road. It was burnt down and destroyed in the 14th century due to increased warfare. The old palace and city ruins can be seen today as they’ve been well-preserved.
Gaochang was once a fertile and prosperous city serving as capital for three western states in ancient times. The location of Gaochang was ideal as it was located in the middle of the Turpan Basin and the city’s layout was designed with high walls and deep moats, making it a significant military fortress for the Western Region for centuries.
With an area of about 2 million square meters, the Ancient Ruins contain the outer and inner cities, along with a palace. The layout of the city is similar to that of Chang’an (capital of the Tang Dynasty at that time, today’s Xi’an). It is said that, “If you want to learn about the prosperity of the Tang Dynasty, Gaochang Ancient Ruins will show you.”
The outer city is surrounded by 11-meter high and 12-meter wide mud walls and nine city gates. The inner city is a 3-kilometer long rectangle that shares its southern wall with the Palace in the northern part of the inner city. A pagoda called, “The Castle of Khan” (meaning “Imperial Palace”) stands on a high stage there.
With a history of about 1,300 years, Gaochang, has witnessed many ups and downs in the Turpan region. These delicate ancient ruins have been listed as precious cultural relics under state protection.

A Weekend in Jiayuguan
A Record of a weekend I spent in Jiayuguan with Kieran and Beth, as well as the previous week going around Gansu province with Tom and our school on a school trip.
Jiayuguan is home to the far end of the Great Wall of China and also served as an opportunity to finally go on a camel in the Gobi desert!

SUMMARY
=======
The Jin dynasty or the Jin Empire (; Chinese: 晉朝; pinyin: Jìn Cháo, sometimes distinguished as the Sima Jin (司马晋) or Liang Jin) (两晋, Two Jins) was a Chinese dynasty traditionally dated from 266 to 420. It was founded by Sima Yan, son of Sima Zhao, who was made Prince of Jin and posthumously declared the founder of the dynasty. It followed the Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD), which ended with the conquest of Eastern Wu by the Jin.
There are two main divisions in the history of the dynasty. The Western Jin (266–316) was established as a successor state to Cao Wei after Sima Yan usurped the throne, and had its capital at Luoyang or Chang'an (modern Xi'an); Western Jin reunited China in 280, but fairly shortly thereafter fell into a succession crisis, civil war, and invasion by the Five Barbarians (Wu Hu). The rebels and invaders began to establish new self-proclaimed states in the Yellow River valley in 304, inaugurating the Sixteen Kingdoms era. These states immediately began fighting each other and the Jin Empire, leading to the second division of the dynasty, the Eastern Jin (317–420) when Sima Rui moved the capital to Jiankang (modern Nanjing). The Eastern Jin dynasty was eventually overthrown by the Liu Song.
