Nuremberg (Germany) Travel - Henkersteg
Take a tour of Henkersteg in Nuremberg, Germany -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Henkersteg, meaning Hangman's Bridge, lies in the stunning ancient town of Nuremberg in the southern state of Bavaria, Germany.
Between the 16th and 19th centuries, the town's hangman resided in the segregated tower of this structure, resulting in its daunting moniker.
This bridge was constructed to replace part of the town's fortified wall, after it was washed away by a devastating flood.
In the mid 20th century, after being damaged by war, this stone based, wood covered, and tile roofed structure was reconstructed.
Medieval Germany was highly influenced by religious and folkloric superstition, and it was because of this that the town hangman had to live in absolute seclusion.
This once taboo structure is now cherished by the town, and provides beauty, function, and a stark but interesting history.

Places to see in ( Nuremberg - Germany ) Johannisfriedhof Nurnberg
The Johannisfriedhof is a cemetery in Nuremberg with historical and artistically valuable bronze epitaphs as well as historically significant lying tombstones ( tombstones ) and burial places of famous Nuremberg from four centuries. Because of the many rose bushes he is also called Rosenfriedhof . Due to the historical sights , the Johannisfriedhof is a destination within the framework of a cemetery tourism and a station within the historic mile of Nuremberg . The epitaphs were in theBavarian State Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage added.
The cemetery is located west of the Nuremberg city wall in St. Johannis , which was incorporated in 1825. In the middle of the cemetery is the 13th-century St. Johannis Church . On the eastern edge is the round Holzschuher chapel (1513-1515), which Hans Beheim is attributed to the Elder .
The former cemetery of the old settlement Johannis was in the 10./11. Century created. Germ cell for the later Johannisfriedhof was 1234 a Siechkobel (leper house) for leprosy patients . Around 1395, the plague cemetery was consecrated there with the Stephanus chapel (the later Holzschuherkapelle).
In Nuremberg, the deceased were buried in the cemeteries in the Middle Ages, which surrounded the two parish churches of St. Sebald and St. Lawrence . During the great plague epidemics of the late Middle Ages , in 1518, the Council prohibited any burial in these old cemeteries within the city walls. For the parish of St. Lawrence the Rochusfriedhof was newly created near the Spittlertor . The deceased Sebalder citizens were buried in the Johannisfriedhof, which existed since the 13th century. There was the leprosy cemetery behind the church and since 1518 also the plague cemetery. 1644 took place under the pastor Wolfgang Jacob Dümleran extension of the cemetery.
From the city to the cemetery leads the Nuremberg Way of the Cross with seven stations, which were created in 1506-1508 by Adam Kraft . Since the 20th century, only copies of these works have been on the Way of the Cross. The original stations are in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum , the crucifixion group in the Heilig-Geist-Spital and the entombment in the Holzschuherkapelle.

Nuremberg, a city in northern Bavaria, is distinguished by medieval architecture such as the fortifications and stone towers of its Altstadt (Old Town). At the northern edge of the Altstadt, surrounded by red-roofed buildings, stands Kaiserburg Castle. The Hauptmarkt (central square) contains the Schöner Brunnen, the gilded “beautiful fountain” with tiers of figures, and Frauenkirche, a 14th-century Gothic church.
Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Bavaria’s second-largest city and the unofficial capital of Franconia, is an energetic place where the nightlife is intense and the beer is as dark as coffee. As one of Bavaria’s biggest draws it is alive with visitors year-round, but especially during the spectacular Christmas market.
For centuries, Nuremberg was the undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire and the preferred residence of most German kings, who kept their crown jewels here. Rich and stuffed with architectural wonders, it was also a magnet for famous artists, though the most famous of all, Albrecht Dürer, was actually born here. ‘Nuremberg shines throughout Germany like a sun among the moon and stars,’ gushed Martin Luther. By the 19th century, the city had become a powerhouse in Germany’s industrial revolution.
The Nazis saw a perfect stage for their activities in working class Nuremberg. It was here that the fanatical party rallies were held, the boycott of Jewish businesses began and the infamous Nuremberg Laws outlawing German citizenship for Jewish people were enacted. On 2 January 1945, Allied bombers reduced the city to landfill, killing 6000 people in the process.
After WWII the city was chosen as the site of the war crimes tribunal, now known as the Nuremberg Trials. Later, the painstaking reconstruction – using the original stone – of almost all the city’s main buildings, including the castle and old churches in the Altstadt, returned the city to some of its former glory.
When people think of Nuremberg, they usually think of gingerbread, toys, Christmas, the Nazi Party Rally Grounds or the Nuremberg Trials. The old town of Nuremberg is much more than this and indeed Nuremberg probably comes closest to many tourists' expectations of a typical German city: on the one hand one can find half-timbered houses, gothic churches within a medieval city wall in the shadow of the towering imperial castle, which was one of the most important residences of the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. On the other hand, Nuremberg and the surrounding cities are home to many well-known German companies, e.g. Adidas, Diehl, Faber-Castell, Playmobil, Puma and several divisions of industrial giant Siemens. Finally, Nuremberg even can live up to culinary expectations with breweries and beergardens and its most famous dish, the Nuremberg sausages with Sauerkraut.
