Early life[edit]
Kevin Richardson was born in the Nightingale Clinic on 8 October 1974 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent his childhood in the neighbourhood of Orange Grove.[2] His mother, Patricia, worked for Barclays Bank and was also born in South Africa. Richardson's father, who worked for a pharmaceutical company, was born in the United Kingdom and moved to South Africa from Reading, Berkshire. Kevin Richardson is the youngest of four children: he has an older brother and two sisters who are twins.[3] His father died when Richardson was thirteen years old. When he was about sixteen, he met Stan Schmidt and began his career as a self-taught behaviourist.[2]
Career[edit]
Richardson went to college and studied zoology, but quit following two years of repetitive lessons on marine biology instead of mammals. As an adult, Richardson believed that he would never have a career working with animals and that it would remain a hobby of his. He started taking courses in physiology and anatomy in college[4] and started a career in exercise physiology.[5] and became an exercise physiologist. When he was twenty-three, he had the opportunity to work with two six-month-old lion cubs, Tau and Napoleon, at the Lion Park near the outskirts of his home in Johannesburg.[6] He still works with the grown cubs.[4] The facility owner, Rodney Fuhr, started him off with a part-time job at the Lion Park.[6]
Kevin Richardson with spotted hyena
Richardson and his team work with animals for the commercial filming industry and make documentaries to generate income to fund the facility. They also have a volunteer programme which generates income and volunteers who help to run the sanctuary.[4]
Facilities[edit]
Richardson worked in a 1600-acre Lion Park in Broederstroom, a town 35 miles north of his hometown, Johannesburg, in South Africa. While specializing in lions, he also interacted with hyenas and leopards.[5] He spent the first part of his lion career at the Lion Park before moving to the Kingdom of the White Lion. Richardson has a special facility called the Kingdom of the White Lion in Broederstroom.[7][8] The park, which was set up with the help of Rodney Fuhr,[4] is 800 hectares (2,000 acres) and was built for the set of the movie White Lion.[8] Richardson cares for thirty-nine lions at this facility.[7] Currently, the facility is private, but there are plans to open it to the public.[9]
As of 2015, the Kevin Richardson Wildlife Sanctuary relocated to Welgedacht Private Game Reserve near Pretoria.[10]
Lion care[edit]
Kevin Richardson with lions
Richardson has worked with big cats and relies on intuition rather than static rules. He has slept next to, fed, and lived with lions. Along with lions, he has worked with cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. He prefers lions to any other big cat.[11] His relationship with the animals, however, has not been an instant one. He has known all of the lions he works with since they were cubs.[5] He still continues his bond with Tau and Napoleon, the lion brothers who were his introduction to big cats.[4]
Richardson rejects the traditional notion that lions should be mastered and dominated, preferring to develop a relationship over time, based on love and respect.[12] A lion is not a possession; it's a sentient being, so you must pay attention and develop your bond like with any relationship. [12]
Dangers[edit]
Richardson has been scratched, punctured and bitten but never in a malicious way. Richardson is not dissuaded by these dangers. In an interview, he mentions, Obviously one realizes the danger when working with animals of this calibre, I've weighed the pros and I've weighed the cons, and the pros far outweigh the cons. He warns about following in his footsteps, however. All the pictures of his adventures do not backstreet boy

Tshwane probing Dinokeng land claims
JOHANNESBURG - The City of Tshwane is investigating claims by residents of Dinokeng, north of the capital, that they are entitled to a portion of land within the Dinokeng Big Five Nature Reserve.
Last week locals held a protest and damaged a section of the electric fence and set alight a section of land inside the wild life park.
They claim the land is theirs and want animals kept within the park to be moved to make space for them.
The City of Tshwane's Blessing Manale said, They aren't entitled to the land and it means there was fraud to buy land. The matter is now a police matter and the city can help the community to get their money or identify the perpetrators.
Yesterday the game reserve warned residents in surrounding areas that wild animals may escape from the park.
Dinokeng manager Piet Venter said repairs to the fence could take six days to complete.
Feeding A Hungry Black Leopard

Life with Lion Whisperer: Incredible pictures show the bond between a man and his pride of big cats
A pride of African lions and the world-renowned 'Lion Whisperer' Kevin Richardson have become the unlikely stars of a glossy Mercedes-Benz advertising campaign. One of the majestic animals climbs onto the bonnet of a Mercedes SUV in one stunning image, and two others wrestle with Mr Richardson in his wildlife sanctuary in Pretoria, South Africa, in the playful series of photographs. But the pictures, shot by photographer Adrian Steirn, have a serious message - they are being used to raise awareness of the plight of the animals in Africa.
The aim of Steirn and Richardson was a single picture that would capture a conservation message: 'What legacy will we leave for our future generations?' One image - between takes - shows expert Kevin Richardson wrestling comfortably with two fully grown lions. In others, we see the animals inspecting a camp fire and prowling on top of a Mercedes. Photographer Steirn, 36, said: 'Hearing a two-tonne vehicle creak and move and seeing the dents in the car that the lion left behind was a fascinating experience. 'It was unbelievable to see the size of their paws and how easy it was for them to jump onto the vehicle, just how athletic they are.'
Richardson is a conservationist whose work has brought millions of people around the world into the discussion about lion conservation. The founder of a wildlife sanctuary that is now home to over 30 lions, Richardson has developed an intimate bond with his cats and he famously walks freely with the animals. Flouting common misconceptions that breaking an animal’s spirit with sticks and chains is the best way to subdue them, he uses love, understanding and trust to develop personal bonds with the lions. He has presented and produced several documentaries that detail his relationships with the animals and highlight the plight of lions both in captivity and in the wild.
Steirn added: 'To be able to really understand Kevin's background and relationship with these big cats was incredible. 'He puts his heart and soul into lion conservation, so to be able to showcase the cats and their massive value to our world in this way was a great opportunity. 'The lions weren't wild but habituated lions. Kevin was at home in his wildlife sanctuary with these huge carnivores.'
The pair were given 48 hours to work with some of the most impressive predators in Pretoria's Welgedacht Private Game Reserve. But getting the final winning shot proved to be less than easy because the lions had to first become accustomed to Steirn. The challenge for the duo lay in framing the male lion to the right of a caged female behind bars in one of Richardson's cars, which was used as a makeshift prop to represent captivity. During the project the pair also ran into difficulty with bad weather conditions - facing a heavy storm in the first 24 hours of the shoot. 'That put a lot of pressure on time,' said Steirn.
The number of lions in the wild are decreasing rapidly, with the current estimated population down to 20,000 - a major decrease on the estimated 100,000 in the early 1990s. 'They are such big animals so I was very well aware of them because things can go wrong very quickly with the lions,' said Steirn. 'I have been shooting wild lions for almost 20 years now and to shoot these lions in this capacity and to get this close was really extraordinary.'
