The Wellington Cenotaph, also known as the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial, is a war memorial in Wellington, New Zealand. Commemorating the New Zealand dead of World War I, and World War II. it was unveiled on Anzac Day (25 April) 1931 and is located on the intersection of Lambton Quay and Bowen Street, by the New Zealand Parliament Buildings. It features two wings decorated with relief sculptures and is topped with a bronze figure on horseback. Two bronze lions and a series of bronze friezes were later added in commemoration of World War II. On 18 March 1982, it was registered as a Category I historic place with registration number 215.[1] It is a focus of Anzac Day commemorations in the city.
On 2 September, 2013 new plans for the cenotaph were presented including a new staircase and water feature up to the Parliament Buildings. The works also includes repairs to the cenotaph surface materials and creation of a square to create a ceremonial space.[2] [3]
In 2015 the Wellington Anzac Day citizen's wreath-laying ceremony was held at the upgraded Cenotaph.

Māori ode rings out at Wellington cenotaph
Since the early hours of this morning right up until now, remembrance services for soldiers who fought in the war continue in Wellington. But something quite different happened at the dawn service at the town centre's cenotaph this morning, it was the first time the ode had been read at that particular venue in Māori, preceding the English version.

STORYLINE:
Scores of Australians and New Zealanders gathered for a solemn ceremony in Brussels on Friday to mark the anniversary of Anzac Day, named for those who lost their lives fighting for the Australian New Zealand Army Corps.
The Anzac Day commemoration in Brussels, was held at the Menin Gate, a monument dedicated to the missing British and Commonwealth soldiers killed in battlefields in western Flanders during World War One.
Friday's service in the Belgian capital marked the bloody campaign for the village of Passchendaele in Belgium, during the first world war.
The Battle of Passchendaele, ended with the capture of the small village church and left 500-thousand soldiers from Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand dead, wounded or missing.
Anzac ambassadors laid wreaths at the war memorial while relatives of the soldiers who died paid their respects and homage during the ceremony.
This year marks the 93rd Anzac Day.
