Walks in Somerset - Exploring Cathedral City of Wells
Today Julia and I are exploring very briefly the city of Wells in Somerset. We have stopped en-route from our return home from Glastonbury. Clearly in a short ten minute walk around we cannot do the city justice, so will have to return in the future.
Wells is a cathedral city and civil parish in the Mendip district of Somerset, on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills. Although the population recorded in the 2011 census was only 10,536, and with a built-up area of just 3.245 square kilometres,Wells has had city status since medieval times, because of the presence of Wells Cathedral. It is often described as England's smallest city.

Wells cathedral clock, United Kingdom.
Dial face and automata of the Well´s cathedral clock.
It was constructed in 1392, so, before the discovering of the Chioggia´s clock, in Venice, Wells cathedral clock was considered the second oldest surviving one in the world. The clockwork mechanism is now restored and in working condition in the Science Museum of London, but the dial face and the automata are still in the cathedral.
The face was made in 1392 and shows two series of 12 hours, the minutes and the moon phase. The automatons on the top were started each hour and they represent a medieval tournament of knights. One of them is stroked by another one and it falls on his back.
There is also another automaton named Jack Blandifer which strikes the quarters and the hours and moves his neck.

The Wells Cathedral Clock, Wells, England - 1390 CE
May 22, 2015
We visited the Wells Cathedral and as we came upon the Clock we noticed that we had to wait only 2 minutes to see this very ancient clock strike the quarter hour.
We watched the four knights on horses jousting around in tournament.
The Wells Clock is circa 1390 CE and is one of the oldest medieval clock faces in the world.
The Wells Cathedral clock is an astronomical clock in the north transept of Wells Cathedral, England.
It was made by Peter Lightfoot, a monk at the Abbey.

Wells Cathedral:
The Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew, commonly known as Wells Cathedral, is an Anglican cathedral in Wells, Somerset. The cathedral, dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle, is the seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells. It is the mother church of the diocese and contains the bishop's throne (cathedra). It was built between 1175 and 1490, replacing an earlier church built on the same site in 705. It is moderately sized among the medieval cathedrals of England, between those of massive proportion such as Lincoln and York and the smaller cathedrals in Oxford and Carlisle. With its broad west front and large central tower, it is the dominant feature of its small cathedral city and a landmark in the Somerset countryside.[9] Wells has been described as unquestionably one of the most beautiful[10] and as the most poetic of English cathedrals.[11]
The cathedral's architecture presents a harmonious whole which is entirely Gothic and mostly in the Early English style of the late-12th and early-13th centuries. In this respect Wells differs from most other English medieval cathedrals, which have parts in the earlier Romanesque style introduced to Britain by the Normans in the 11th century....
United States:
The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America (/əˈmɛrɪkə/), is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19]
At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2)[20] and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area,[fn 7] and the third-most populous. Wells Cathedral - England
Wells Cathedral is a Church of England cathedral in Wells, Somerset, England. It is the seat of the Bishop of Bath and Wells, who lives at the adjacent Bishop's Palace.
Built between 1175 and 1490, Wells Cathedral has been described as the most poetic of the English Cathedrals.Much of the structure is in the Early English style and is greatly enriched by the deeply sculptural nature of the mouldings and the vitality of the carved capitals in a foliate style known as stiff leaf. The eastern end has retained much original glass, which is rare in England. The exterior has a splendid Early English façade and a large central tower.

The first church was established on the site in 705. Construction of the present building began in the 10th century and was largely complete at the time of its dedication in 1239. It has undergone several expansions and renovations since then and has been designated by English Heritage as a grade I listed building.[4]
Peter Price is the current Bishop of Bath and Wells having been appointed in 2001; and John Clarke took over as Dean in September 2004 after previously being principal of Ripon College, Cuddesdon, Oxford.

Bishops Palace:
This splendid medieval palace has been the home of the Bishops of Bath & Wells for over 800 years. The first bishop of Bath & Wells received a crown licence to build a residence and deer park to the south of the cathedral. Within the fortified Palace walls lie the ruin of the Great Hall, the Bishop's private chapel and 14 acres of gardens, including an arboretum, Community Garden and Garden of Reflection. This uniquely moated palace has an imposing gatehouse with portcullis and drawbridge which give the impression that you may be entering a castle structure, but inside is a peaceful and tranquil residence for the visitor to enjoy.

Europe:
Europe is a continent located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere and mostly in the Eastern Hemisphere. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. It comprises the westernmost part of Eurasia. Europe is generally considered as separated from Asia by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways of the Turkish Straits.[5] Yet the non-oceanic boundary between Europe and Asia—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—is arbitrary and amounts to a historical and social construct.
Canada:
Canada (/ˈkænədə/; French: [kanadɑ]) is a country which is located in the northern part of North America. Its ten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98 million square kilometres (3.85 million square miles), making it the world's second-largest country by total area, and the fourth-largest country by land area. Canada's southern border with the United States is the world's longest bi-national land border. The majority of the country has a cold or severely cold winter climate, but southern areas are warm in summer. Canada is sparsely populated, the majority of its land territory being dominated by forest and tundra and the Rocky Mountains. It is highly urbanized with 82 percent of the 35.15 million people concentrated in large and medium-sized cities, many near the southern border. Its capital is Ottawa, and its three largest metropolitan areas are Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.
