UK must nominate EU Commissioner if Brexit date extended, Irish Hogan will negotiate UK trade deal
If the United Kingdom is granted another Brexit extension by the European Union, then it will have to nominate a European commissioner, Ursula von der Leyen said.
The president-elect of the European Commission was speaking in Brussels as she unveiled the portfolios that her team will get — subject to approval by the European Parliament.
The U.K. is not part of the list as Boris Johnson has said there was no need to nominate a commissioner when the country is leaving the EU on October 31. But that was before the Westminster parliament voted to force Johnson to ask for an extension if there's no Brexit deal in place by October 19.
Von der Leyen, a former German defense minister, said the U.K. will have to nominate a commissioner if it is still a member of the bloc when the new Commission takes office on November 1.
The European Commission has named Phil Hogan, an Irish politician with a hatred of Brexit, to lead the department that will negotiate a free trade agreement with Britain.
British negotiators face the daunting prospect of facing “Big Phil”, who will team up with Sabine Weyand, the former deputy chief Brexit negotiator on November 1.
Mr Hogan was Ireland’s EU commissioner for the last five years and has regularly criticised the British government over the Irish border issue.

Competing to win the right to challenge Trump are 20 candidates, including Vice President under Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and recognisable left wing figure Bernie Sanders. Biden currently leads the polls, but the second place candidate, Elizabeth Warren has proved a surprise package. She has climbed six points to reach 25 percent in the latest polls with Biden on 31 percent, but Warren continues to gain momentum in the race to become the Democratic candidate. In a poll asking who voters in the primaries are most enthusiastic about, Warren leads on 35 percent. She has had distinctive support from liberals and white voters up to this point in the race for candidacy. She currently works as the Senator for Massachusetts, having been an academic, lawyer and served as chairwoman of the Congressional Oversight Panel in 2008, as well as special adviser to the Secretary of the Treasury under the Obama administration. The Senator has enjoyed a quick rise, and now poses a genuine threat to favourite Biden, and therefore could plausibly become the woman to replace Trump in the White House if she wins a general election. Warren's main point of call politically has always been big businesses, something which could tell us more about her Brexit views, and how she would deal with the UK in a post-Brexit world should she take the presidency. She has remained quiet on the state of the United Kingdom, concentrating on domestic issues at home and now her 2020 campaigns. However, she is a staunch supporter for regulation on big business and tech companies that operate internationally. In February 2019, Warren signed a letter to the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Justice calling for regulators to abandon a proposed $26billion merger between T-Mobile and Sprint. Warren said: Fostering robust competition in telecommunications markets is the best way to provide every American with access to high-quality, cutting-edge communications at a reasonable price. In March 2019, Warren outlined a plan for greater regulation and competition in the tech sector, placing sterner restrictions on big tech companies while showing leniency to smaller companies. She said in a blog post: “Today’s big tech companies have too much power – too much power over our economy, our society, and our democracy. They’ve bulldozed competition, used our private information for profit, and tilted the playing field against everyone else.” Most crucial however in regards to post-Brexit Britain, is her praise of the EU's fining of Google in 2018. The EU has filed three separate investigations into Google based on antitrust violations. Trending The $5billion – £4billion – fines in 2018 were lauded by
UK Inflation set to soar to 4% by late 2017
UK Inflation set to soar to 4% by late 2017
Today is Wednesday 2nd November 2016 and we are briefly addressing the issue of rising inflation in the United Kingdom.
Many analysts and economists have predicted that the UK’s exit from the EU will not only result in a lower value of sterling, but also a rise in inflation.
An article published by the BBC today states that a leading think tank has forecast UK inflation will quadruple to about 4% in the second half of next year and that disposable incomes will be cut.
The National Institute for Economic and Social Research (NIESR) is the UK's oldest independent economic research body and was founded in 1938. It quotes:
“The rise in prices will accelerate rapidly during 2017 as the fall in sterling is passed on to consumers”.
The revised figure is sharply higher than the 3% it forecast in August. Growth too will be adversely affected. NIESR predicts that the economy would expand by 2% in 2016 - but would fall to just 1.4% growth next year.
Dr Angus Armstrong, director of macroeconomics at NIESR, told the BBC's Today programme.
Households have really got a choice. Do they spend less or do they start saving less? … Given the savings ratio was at its lowest level since 2008, the most likely scenario is that they spend much less, hence the weaker [growth] forecast for next year.
Consumer Price Index inflation rose to 1% in September, up from 0.6% in August, the Office for National Statistics said last month. That was the highest rate for nearly two years.
On the positive front, the think tank also predicts that inflation would only return to the Bank of England's target of 2% in 2020.
The question to ask of course is simply; that if inflation does rise to 4% can it be reduced again without raising interest rates, and if not, then what further damage to growth will occur if they are raised? Something to ponder in the US too, should the dollar come under selling pressure for whatever reason.

Some things to think about when developing or improving a property in regards to well location. Consult your local hydro geologist, and spend some time determining the best place to drill a well. Common Salt - a show and tell about nature, empire and memory with Sheila Ghelani and Sue Palmer
Common Salt is a performance around a table – a ‘show and tell’.
It explores the colonial, geographical history of England and India taking an expansive and emotional time-travel, from the first Enclosure Act and the start of the East India Company in the 1600s, to 21st century narratives of trade, race and culture.
Sue and Sheila activate insights into our shared past, laying out a ‘home museum’ of objects and stories; of the Great Hedge of India, of borders, and collections – all accompanied by original Shruti box laments.
“Common Salt … was exquisite … A miniature with epic undertones.”
Audience on Twitter
Common Salt is a reckoning; the interconnectedness between history and global power, artefact and trade, race and memory is hidden in plain sight.
“Common Salt was incredible – Sheila Ghelani and Sue Palmer create a completely hypnotic space. Honestly unlike anything I’ve seen before.”
Audience on Twitter
“… like reading a book in 3D real life. Both my friend and I were gripped throughout and couldn’t stop talking about all the ideas it sparked.”

Victorian house
In the United Kingdom and former British colonies, a Victorian house generally means any house built during the reign of Queen Victoria. During the Industrial Revolution successive housing booms resulted in the building of many millions of Victorian houses which are now a defining feature of most British towns and cities.
In the UK, Victorian houses follow a wide range of architectural styles. Starting from the early classicism inherited from Regency architecture, the Italianate style gained influence in the 1820 and 1850s, and the Gothic Revival style became prevalent by the 1880s. Later in the Victorian era, the Queen Anne style and the Arts and Crafts movement increased in influence, resulting in the transition to styles typically seen in Edwardian houses. Victorian houses are also found in many former British colonies where the style might be adapted to local building materials or customs, for example in Sydney, Australia and Melaka, Malaysia.

The Indian government is in a dilemma as it decides what to do with billions of banknotes recently invalidated in a massive policy change. Ameera David has the details. Then, Bianca Facchinei takes a look at the U.K.’s Investigatory Powers Bill, which is on its way to become law, while expanding the government’s surveillance capabilities. Afterwards, Rick Rule, CEO of Sprott Holdings, breaks down what’s going on with gold demand.
Following the break, Cate Long of Puerto Rico Clearinghouse gives her take on the state takeover of Atlantic City, Donald Trump’s infrastructure plans, and whether or not Chris Christie could find himself in the president-elect’s cabinet. And finally, in The Big Deal, Edward Harrison examines the European Central Bank’s latest moves to shore up the European economy, and if it could actually be creating the next crisis instead.

Theresa May 'cross and insulted' by Tory MP who hints former PM is 'apologist for miscreants'
Former UK Prime Minister Theresa May appeared cross and insulted by Tory MP John Hayes as he praised Priti Patel as Home Secretary hinting the former Prime Minister was an apologist of miscreants when she led the Home Office.
The Conservative backbencher began by telling Home Secretary Priti Patel her position in Government is causing excitement in the nation.
Mr Hayes then took a swipe at former Prime Minister Theresa May as he appeared to claim she was an apologist of miscreants.
The Tory MP was then caught by the parliamentary cameras looking across his bench at the former Tory leader. He said: “Her acquisition of this role is causing great excitement in South Holland and The Deepings and across the nation.
“Because at last, we have a Home Secretary who is not an apologist of miscreants and believes, as my constituents do, that people who cause mayhem and misery should be caught, convicted and locked up for a very long time.”
Commenting on the exchange, Change UK The Independent Group leader Anna Soubry tweeted that Mrs May was cross and insulted.

Starbucks sees China as its Future
Starbucks sees China as its Future
Today is Monday 7th November 2016 and we are looking at Starbucks announcement last Friday about its future growth lying predominantly with China.
Starbucks announced that it had made an operating income of almost $4.2bn for the year ending 2nd October 2016, up 16% on the previous year.
That was mainly down to a strong showing by its largest market, the Americas, where net sales rose 11%. However, in the fourth quarter of its financial year, global sales at existing stores rose by only 4% almost 1% lower than analysts expected.
The fastest growth level was achieved in the China and Asia Pacific region, an increase of 23% for the year. Starbucks boss Howard Schultz said its Chinese stores were the most efficient and lucrative and that expansion in China will secure its future for decades to come, especially as Starbucks plans to more than double its stores in China to 5,000 by 2021.
It currently operates 25,085 stores in 75 countries worldwide, with 690 new ones having opened in the last quarter. An additional 2,500 stores in China will fundamentally change the company’s focus especially as it is experiencing headwinds in the West where an increasing number of ‘shop at home’ consumers avoid visiting their coffee houses.
A host of other Companies also see China as their gateway to the future. Amazon for example have developed trade links with China which is witnessing dozens of factories opening on a weekly basis enabling the Chinese to sell directly to Western consumers via Amazon and there are numerous similar examples.
Why do we raise this we hear you ask? Well, we want each of our listeners to fully appreciate and not underestimate the importance of China both to our economic, and trade systems. With China more or less on target to achieving its annual GDP growth rate of 6.7% and likely to continue with similar rates for a few years to come, the West in particular, is relying on China for future growth.
If this, for any reason were to be disrupted due to a financial crisis for example, then if one thinks times are hard now, in a couple of years one may look back and think that these were truly halcyon days.

Whatley, Mendip
Whatley is a small rural village and civil parish near Frome in the English county of Somerset. Whatley is located near rural villages such as Chantry, Mells and Nunney.
According to Robinson, it was called Watelei in the Domesday Book of 1086, when the tenants of the Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey were Walter Hussey and John the Usher. He suggests the village name means 'The wet meadow' from the Old English woet and leah.
The village gives its name to Whatley Quarry, which lies to the north-west of the village at grid reference ST731479 and is said to be one of the largest in Europe. It is owned by Hanson plc and has been the object of protests against its impact on the environment.
The gatehouse at Manor farm was built around 1500 and is a Grade I listed building.
The hamlet of Lower Whatley is to the south of the village.
The hamlet of Chantry lies 1 mile to the west. It is one of the Thankful Villages which suffered no casualties in the First World War. Chantry Park is Grade II* listed: The Chantry is a neoclassical villa built c. 1825 to the design of Bath architect John Pinch the elder. The Chantry Estate and school were established by the family of James Fussell, an iron magnate operating the Old Iron Works, Mells in Vallis Vale between Mells and Great Elm.
The parish council has responsibility for local issues, including setting an annual precept to cover the council’s operating costs and producing annual accounts for public scrutiny. The parish council evaluates local planning applications and works with the local police, district council officers, and neighbourhood watch groups on matters of crime, security, and traffic. The parish council's role also includes initiating projects for the maintenance and repair of parish facilities, as well as consulting with the district council on the maintenance, repair, and improvement of highways, drainage, footpaths, public transport, and street cleaning. Conservation matters and environmental issues are also the responsibility of the council.
The village falls within the Non-metropolitan district of Mendip, which was formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, having previously been part of Frome Rural District, which is responsible for local planning and building control, local roads, council housing, environmental health, markets and fairs, refuse collection and recycling, cemeteries and crematoria, leisure services, parks, and tourism.
Somerset County Council is responsible for running the largest and most expensive local services such as education, social services, libraries, main roads, public transport, policing and fire services, trading standards, waste disposal and strategic planning.
It is also part of the Somerton and Frome county constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament by the first past the post system of election, and part of the South West England constituency of the European Parliament which elects seven MEPs using the d'Hondt method of party-list proportional representation.
The Church of the Holy Trinity at Chantry dates from 1844–46 by George Gilbert Scott and William Moffatt, with further work by William George Brown of Frome, for James Fussell, who owned the local iron works. It is a Grade I listed building. In 1858 Richard William Church was among the clergy of the church. The Church Of St George in Whatley dates from the 14th century. There is a Sarsen stone in the church which may have pagan origins. The parish is part of the benefice of Mells with Buckland Dinham, Chantry, Great Elm and Whatley within the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

Annotated video: A circular sightseeing-flight departure from New York's central LaGuardia Airport in the tightly confined airspace sandwiched between Newark and JFK airports. One full climb circle later, the nearly continuous left-loop ascent takes this departing EMB 175 back over LaGuardia Airport before proceeding directly south over mid-field JFK to fly south toward Sandy Hook, New Jersey, on this scenic 6,000-foot-cruising-altitude short hop to Philadelphia.

CNN’s senior White House correspondent took his anti-Trump road show to Davos, Switzerland, where President Donald Trump is attending the World Economic Forum. Jim Acosta, who routinely embarrasses himself in the White House press room, was humiliated on the international stage on Thursday.

Acosta followed Trump all the way to Europe this week to harass him over his “America First” agenda. Of course, he could have stayed home and done this from the comfort of his own living room, but instead, CNN’s biggest dumbass trecked it all the way to Switzerland to attack the president.
Trump spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, touting his “America First” agenda while speaking with foreign leaders and business executives from the world’s largest corporations. “We’re very happy to be here,” Trump said as he arrived. “The United States is doing very well, and will continue to do well and this will be a very exciting two days.”
The president is set to address the forum Friday. He is expected to showcase the booming U.S. economy and measures like his recent tax overhaul, claiming that a thriving America benefits the world. A vocal critic of trade deals he sees as unfair to the United States, Trump will also stress the need for what he sees as fair competition.
