Welsh Highland Heritage Railway – Driver, Passenger & Line-side Views.
Another railway in the Welsh town of Porthmadog well worth visiting is the narrow gauge 1 ft 11 1⁄2 in (597 mm) Welsh Highland Heritage Railway (WHHR). Drop in for a drink and a bite to eat in the tearoom before taking a look in the shop where you’ll find an extensive array of books covering the narrow gauge trains of Wales along with many fascinating railways, both in the UK and around the world. Stroll down the platform to join the train made up of both replica and original carriages that once ran on the WHR. The train may be pulled by one of several heritage steam or diesel locomotives. The train runs for about a mile to Pen-y-Mount station just beyond which there is a junction with today’s WHR line to Caernarfon. Passengers can alight here to watch the locomotive run round its train ready for the return trip, stopping at Gelert’s Farm to ride the miniature railway and visit the museum, with its substantial array of rolling stock and artefacts covering the history of the society and the WHR.
The origins of the WHHR started with a small group of railway enthusiasts who formed the Welsh Highland Railway Society in 1961 to preserve and rebuild the original WHR. Construction started on the site in the 1970s following the acquisition of land from British Railways running alongside the Cambrian Coast line at a location known as Beddgelert Sidings. A museum and works has been constructed on the site of Gelert’s Farm, here the line turns though 90 degrees to run parallel with the WHR as far as Pen-y-Mount Junction.
The original WHR has been rebuilt by the Ffestiniog Railway Company, leaving the WHHR to tell the story of the original short lived (1922 to 1936) WHR and look after the surviving locomotive (Russell) and carriages. Welsh Highland Heritage Railway - 24/08/10
A short video at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway in Porthmadog where we see 0-6-0T no.1578 'Gertrude' built in 1918 and visiting for the 2010 operating season after being restored by Exmoor Transport. She is seen running around her train and coupling back up ready to take the train back up the line to Pen-Y-Mount. She is then seen departing and gives some very nice whistles.

An evening with Gertrude on the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway 9th August 2017
A video i haven't uploaded since last year, An evening with Gertrude.
Video starts off at Gelert Farm where Gertrude steams though with the ECS movement to the sheds where she puts the stock back into the sheds.
Later we see a whistling match between Gertrude & Garrett 143 passing on the last trip to Porthmadog. Where later we see in the cab and ride up and down in the yard.
Before we see two last shots from the Sunday before hand (06/08/17) on a normal public running day.
Enjoy!
Welsh Highland Railway - Driver's Eye View - Part 1 - Porthmadog to Rhyd Ddu
With a camera mounted on the front of one of the powerful ex South African NGG16 Garratt locomotives No. 87 our train eases out of Porthmadog station onto the Britannia Road Bridge and level crossing. Number 87 negotiates its way through the town before crossing the Cambrian Coast railway via Britain’s only mixed gauge flat crossing. For a short distance we run next to the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway (WHHR) to Pen y Mount junction, passing under the new Porthmadog bypass into open countryside. Shortly after Pont Croesor station is an interesting bridge carrying both road and rail over the Afon Glaslyn (River Glaslyn). With the distant hills looming on the horizon we steam through pleasant farmland punctuated by the odd river bridge to Nantmor halt after which the character of the line changes as we enter the Aberglaslyn Pass via No.4 tunnel. Bursting from the tunnel onto a ledge high above the pretty river below, with glorious mountain scenery all around we are now traversing one of the most photographed locations in the country. We leave the Aberglaslyn Pass via Goat tunnel to enter Beddgelert station where a Porthmadog bound train is waiting for us to clear the single line. The noise from our engine increases as it lifts its train through the wooded slopes to the summit marker board a mile or so short of Rhyd Ddu station.
Track gauge - 1 ft 11 1⁄2 in (597 mm)
One question that has come up many times in the comments for both the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways is Why doesn't the train leave the tracks when it passes through a switch set for the opposite track - it is not east to explain, but I'll try -
The switches at either end on the passing loop are set to allow trains to pass without the need for railway personnel to set them, in this case the train will always take the right hand track in the direction of travel, when the train reaches the end of the loop the switch appears to be set incorrectly. The switch blades are held in place by a spring mechanism that allows them to be pushed over by the weight of a train passing through them. Once the train is clear they are automatically set to allow a train in the opposite direction to take the right hand track, thus making the passing loop automatic. The system works well so long as a train never reverses before clearing the switch as that will de-rail the train. The first time this system is seen in operation it looks wrong, but it is common practice on many lines where speed is low and costs need to be kept to a minimum.

Old Smokey at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway
I had a play with my old Tich when its new owner brought it to Porthmadog for a visit. There's also a couple of clips of a hilarious tiny pump trolley! Video dedicated to the late Bob Washington who built the 7.25 gauge line.
Welsh Highland Heritage Railway - Wales Trip 2017
After a short drive from my campsite into Porthmadog, I arrive at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway in time for the first train of the day, taking a short journey alongside the other Welsh Highland Railway before watching the locomotive run round and haul the train back to Gelerts Farm, where there is a very informative and interactive museum, as well as miniature train rides, and on select days the chance to drive your own locomotive, for free!
Videos from this trip will be uploaded every Monday and Thursday, hit subscribe to make sure you don't miss any!

UK - Welsh Highland Garratt departs Porthmadog, 17/6/2018
On a rainy morning in June, the first Welsh Highland Railway departure of the day, zig-zags across the road crossing outside Porthmadog Station on its journey of around 40 miles to Caernarfon and back.
Ex.South African Railways 2-6-2+2-6-2 Garratt Class NG/G16, number 87 (Built 1937 by Cockerill in Belgium), is at the head of the train with the Pullman observation car behind. This, of course, will be at the tail end of the train on the return journey.
The locals seem to show little regard for the dangers of the road crossing but the driver of Vauxhall Astra DN17YHA amazed me by driving straight through the red lights almost 30 seconds after the Stop signal began. Are any Police officers reading this?

This year would see Palmerston, Prince and Taliesin haul the Ffestiniog stage of the tour. The locomotives would then swap at Boston Lodge on the way back and would see Merddin Emrys and David Lloyd George take the Welsh Highland Leg.
