Wendover Will - World's Largest Mechanical Cowboy (West Wendover, Nevada)
By entering West Wendover from the west, you can see Wendover Will welcoming you to West Wendover as he sits right in the middle of the road! You cannot park in the middle of the road like you can with the Las Vegas welcome sign, but parking is close by to take pictures etc!
-----------
Wendover Will is a sign created for the Stateline Casino in West Wendover, Nevada in 1952. It is now a landmark for the town of West Wendover.
Address: West Wendover, NV 89883
Hours: Open 24 hours
His job was to wave to tourists passing by on US Highways 40 and 50, later Interstate 80. Wendover Will took part of his name from the town of Wendover. He was decked out like most cowboys of the time - a white hat (he was one of the good guys), a yellow bandana, a red shirt with a Bull Durham tobacco tag hanging from the pocket, Levi's, cowboy boots, a cigarette dangling from his mouth, and a six-gun around his waist.
Will stood in front of the Stateline Hotel and Casino, never taking a day off from 1952 until he lost his job a few years ago. Millions of travelers were welcomed to Where the West Begins. It was okay if they didn't stop, he waved anyway. Most, though, after a long drive over the Salt Flats or an even longer drive over the high deserts of Nevada, were ready to stop and have a cold drink, fill the car with gasoline, and maybe drop a few coins in the casino slot machines.

West Wendover Nevada -Utah
West Wendover is a city in Elko County, Nevada, United States. The population was 4,721 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern border of Nevada and the western edge of the Great Salt Lake Desert, and is contiguous with Wendover, Utah, with which it is sometimes confused. Interstate 80 runs through both cities.
Because of its ties with Wendover, Utah, and its economic ties with central Utah, the U.S. Department of Transportation moved West Wendover to the Mountain Time Zone in October 1999, while the rest of Nevada remains in the Pacific Time Zone. (Jackpot, Nevada in northern Elko county only observes Mountain Time on an unofficial basis.)

Wendover is a resort town of about 6,700 people (2012) straddling the border that divides the American states of Utah and Nevada, 120 miles due west of Salt Lake City. The location on the state border makes Wendover the nearest legalized gambling for millions of people, which has led to the construction of large, extravagant casino resorts despite the town being otherwise very small and remote. This, in turn, has made Wendover sort of a quieter, more laid-back alternative to Las Vegas even for those who don't live in the region. Wendover is also the destination of choice for those attending land speed racing events at Bonneville Speedway, just east of town on the Bonneville Salt Flats!
Recreational Marijuana Coming to West Wendover, Nevada
The West Wendover City Council has voted to approve recreational marijuana sales, which means legal marijuana will soon be sold less than two hours from the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Fox 13's Ben Winslow reports.

Wendover Will
Wendover Will Reclaims Skyline Once Again
Wendover Will has been greeting travelers to Wendover since 1952. His name comes from the founder of the State Line Hotel and Casino, Mr. William “Bill” Smith, who started the State Line Service, a cobble stone service station, on the Utah/Nevada border in 1926. Prior to Wendover Will arriving, visitors were greeted by a shimmering light atop a tall pole that provided a signal of sorts to weary travelers crossing the Great Basin Desert, that they were within reach of this small but important oasis on Highway 40 called Wendover. With gaming legalized in the State of Nevada in 1931, State Line Service grew into the State Line Hotel & Casino, a company which until its sale in 2002 to the Wendover Nugget Hotel & Casino, was on record as the single longest held gaming license in Nevada. As this growth took place, in 1952 after 26 years that light atop the pole was retired making way for what has become a community and State icon, Wendover Will.
Wendover Will was constructed and erected by Young Electric Sign Company out of Salt Lake City, Utah, who has been providing electric and other signs services since 1920. At the time Wendover Will was created, his smaller twin “Vegas Vic” was also completed, who today stands adjacent to Las Vegas’ famous Fremont Street. Wendover Will made the Guinness Book of World Records as the “world’s largest mechanical cowboy”. At the time he stood some 63 feet tall, had 1,184 lineal feet of neon tubing with his two large waving arms powered by a single 3/4 horsepower motor, his eye winking and cigarette flicking. The original pedestal of Wndover Will proclaimed proudly “This is the Place” “Where the West Begins”.
Wendover Will through time proved to become not only an icon of the State Line Hotel and Casino, but as well became an icon of the community itself. When West Wendover, Nevada was incorporated in 1991, Wendover Will took a prominent position in the creation of the City Seal which proclaims proudly “Come Grow With Us”, a true reflection of the original light atop a pole and later the waving arms of a towering mechanical cowboy, welcoming all to this desert oasis.
Wendover Will was given to the City of West Wendover by Wendover Nugget Hotel & Casino in 2004 and now he once again stands tall representing to all, the heritage of our community as “this is the place”, “where the west begins”.
This monument is hereby dedicated in loving memory to two important founding members of our community, William “Bill” and Anna Smith.

Hey guys
A bunch of friends and I took a fun bus from SLC to Wendover. The drive was 2 hours. When we got there we went to a nice buffet that was included with the bus trip. After that we just explored and gambled. It was super fun.
Thanks for watching!

Day 11: Ely, NV to West Wendover, NV
Woke-up feeling pretty quiet and discouraged which is unusual for me. However, after some time on the bike all my worries seem to melt away. God has a pretty incredible way of filling the cracks in my heart as I talk to Him. I have been feeling pretty alone lately so I decided to listen to my Dad’s podcast (The God Journey). I knew that hearing his voice would help me. After listening to a few episodes—he brought up RFW and my ride across the country. It felt like God had winked at me to let me know that everything will be ok.
Praise’s: Got a mexican feast donated—it was the first time we were all full on the trip, all the boys made money at the casino on black jack ($90 between the 4 of us), camping was fun—our tent kept us dry, rode through a lightning storm, TAILWIND—20mph avg speed for the first half of the ride, we had the earliest start at 7:45am and the earliest finish at 2pm, we got showers!
Rebukes: Daniel’s farts have been atrocious, We are all confident in our gambling abilities, campground wifi was tough, Strava route for tomorrow looks like it will have some complications

Hotel Room Tour: Peppermill Hotel & Casino, Wendover, NV
This hotel is owned by the same company as Montego Bay (and Rainbow Casino). They did a good job renovating and maintaining these hotel rooms. The room is very nice and clean, but the amenities here are lacking. No fitness center or pool or computer lab, the casino is the only amenity, you may use the amenities at Montego Bay if you are staying here however. Also, the external security on the hotel doors is non-existant, no card readers on exterior doors, they're just open. Not too big of deal most of the time, it's just something I notice as an access control nut.
