Much Wenlock is a small town in Shropshire, England.
The Wenlock Olympian Games established by Dr William Penny Brookes in 1850 are centred in the town and at other locations across Shropshire. Dr Brookes is credited as a founding father of the modern Olympic Games.

Much Wenlock is a small town and parish in Shropshire, England, situated on the A458 road between Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth. Nearby, to the northeast, is the Ironbridge Gorge, and the new town of Telford.
Much Wenlock was historically the chief town of the ancient borough of Wenlock. The Much was added to the name to distinguish it from the nearby Little Wenlock, and signifies that it is the larger of the two settlements. Notable historic attractions in the town are Wenlock Priory and the Guildhall. The name Wenlock probably comes from the Celtic name Wininicas, meaning white area (in reference to the limestone of Wenlock Edge), plus the Old English loca, meaning enclosed place. The town was recorded in the Domesday Book as Wenloch.
The Wenlock Olympian Games established by Dr William Penny Brookes in 1850 are centred in the town. Dr Brookes is credited as a founding father of the modern Olympic Games, and one of the Olympic mascots for London 2012 was named Wenlock after the town.
Richard Fletcher mentions Much Wenlock as one of the possible locations where a Sub-Roman British Christian community may have survived the Anglo-Saxon occupation and eventually integrated with the conquerors and influenced their culture. The town of Wenlock is known to have grown up around an abbey or monastery founded around 680 by Merewalh, a son of King Penda of Mercia, with the small town within its parish boundaries. King Penda installed his daughter Milburga as abbess in 687. Milburga of Wenlock was credited with many miraculous works.
Much Wenlock has become known as the birthplace of Wenlock Olympian Games set up by Dr William Penny Brookes and his Wenlock Olympian Society (WOS) in 1850. In 1861 he was also instrumental in setting up the Shropshire Games and later in 1866, the National Olympian Games. Dr Brookes is credited as a founding father of the Modern Olympic Games. In 1890 it was the turn of the Raven Hotel to be the venue for the annual post Wenlock Olympian Games' dinner, and Baron Pierre de Coubertin was the guest of honour. Copies of some of the WOS's archive images are on display in the hotel, including letters from Coubertin to Brookes. The Wenlock Olympian Games, a nine-day event staged on eight sites across Shropshire, are still held annually during July, and are still organised by WOS. Much Wenlock's secondary school is named after Dr Brookes.
A borough of Wenlock existed until 1966 which, at its height, was – by area – the largest borough in England outside London and encompassed several of the towns that now constitute Telford. The borough had unusual boundaries, covering Much Wenlock itself, but also Little Wenlock, Broseley and Ironbridge, a total area of 71 square miles (180 km2). In 1966 the core Wenlock parts became part of the Bridgnorth Rural District, with other parts also going to Dawley Urban District and to Wellington Rural District.

Haunted History of : Wilderhope Manor ,Wenlock Edge,Shropshire, England.U.K
Wilderhope Manor is a 16th-century manor house in the care of the National Trust. It is located on Wenlock Edge 7 miles (11 km) south west of Much Wenlock in Shropshire, England. The manor is a Grade I listed building and since the mid 20th century has been used as a youth hostel.
A diehard Royalist, Smalman's home was once besieged by Roundheads during the latter stages of the Civil War. The Major managed to escape on horseback, his ghost now seen galloping away from the building. The manor itself is also reported to be haunted by both Smalman and the shade of a young girl who smiles at any witnesses before screaming horribly.The other frequently witnessed ghost at Wilderhope Manor is possibly the most terrifyingly chilling that you will ever hear of, and one that leaves even the most hardened of Eerie Evenings' staff rather apprehensive and excited at the prospect of encountering it. This particular spirit appears in the unassuming form of a little girl, who approaches visitors with a beaming smile. However, her smile then suddenly disappears and she lets out a bloodcurdling scream, leaving those who have witnessed it completely petrified and clamouring to get as far away from the place as possible.
The Manor's owner during the English Civil War was Major Thomas Smallman. He was a Royalist who was forced to flee from Cromwell’s approaching troops. After managing to escape on horseback, Major Smallman took a do-or-die plunge down a steep slope at Wenlock Edge. His horse was killed but Smallman survived thanks to an apple tree breaking his fall. Since then the ghosts of Smallman and his horse are said to appear in an area now known as Major’s Leap and have been said to have been seen at the manor.
Built in the latter part of the sixteenth century by Francis Smallman whose initials, and those of his wife Ellen, appear in the plasterwork of the ceiling.
A writer spent a week's holiday at Wilderhope because he'd heard about the ghost of a cavalier who haunts the main hall.
For the first night nothing happened but the following day when he was up on scaffolding painting the fine plaster ceiling he suddenly became aware of a tall figure standing in the doorway.
At first he thought it was the warden checking up on him but then he noticed that the man was dressed in a full cloak, a floppy hat with a large plume, and thigh length boots.He then thought he was a visitor in fancy dress, but when he said 'Hello' all the visitor did was to raise his head slightly, before walking across the room and passing through a solid wall.
To stay at the Hostel ..Nearest town of Church Stretton,is a 15 minute drive.

Ironbridge To Much Wenlock Walk was about 6.5 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of: field and woodland paths and tracks; a riverside path; hard surface tracks, lanes and road sections. The walking was easy on level ground or gentle slopes. Route finding was easy with obvious paths and good waymarking and good landmarks. Take care on the riverside path through Ironbridge as it is quite close to the edge of the river. There was 1 stile to negotiate.
