A look inside Britain's biggest private country residence
It is a year since the Wentworth Woodhouse (interior pictured bottom ), hidden in the South Yorkshire countryside just outside Rotherham, was bought by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust for £7 million. This modest purchase price - the cost of a flat in parts of central London - is just the beginning of a mammoth investment needed by the trust as it works to reverse decades of decay. Trust chief executive Sarah McLeod believes that the total bill could be between £150 and £200 million. This is because the task she faces is epic. Wentworth Woodhouse's 606ft facade (pictured centre) is wider than Buckingham Palace - a building it stood in for during the filming of Oscar-nominated movie Darkest Hour - and its floor area is about the same as the Grand Kremlin Palace in Moscow.

Places to see in ( Yorkshire - UK ) Wentworth Woodhouse
Wentworth Woodhouse is a Grade I listed country house in the village of Wentworth, near Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. It is currently owned by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust. Considered to be the largest private residence in the United Kingdom (larger royal residences such as Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle are not privately owned), it has an east front of 606 feet (185 m); the longest country house façade in Europe.
Wentworth Woodhouse has more than 300 rooms, although the precise number is unclear, with 250,000 square feet (23,000 m2) of floorspace (124,600 square feet (11,580 m2) of living area). It covers an area of more than 2.5 acres (1.0 ha), and is surrounded by a 180-acre (73 ha) park, and an estate of 15,000 acres (6,100 ha).
The original Jacobean house was rebuilt by Thomas Watson-Wentworth, 1st Marquess of Rockingham (1693–1750), and vastly expanded by his son, the 2nd Marquess, who was twice Prime Minister, and who established Wentworth Woodhouse as a Whig centre of influence. In the 18th century, the house was inherited by the Earls Fitzwilliam who owned it until 1979, when it passed to the heirs of the 8th and 10th Earls, its value having appreciated from the large quantities of coal discovered on the estate.
Wentworth Woodhouse comprises two joined houses, forming west and east fronts. The original house, now the west front, with the garden range facing northwest towards the village, was built of brick with stone details. The east front of unsurpassed length is credibly said to have been built as the result of a rivalry with the Stainborough branch of the Wentworth family, which inherited the Great Strafford's minor title of Baron Raby, but not his estates, which went to Watson, including the notable series of Strafford portraits by Anthony van Dyck and Daniel Mytens, who added Wentworth to his surname. The Stainborough Wentworths, for whom the Strafford earldom was revived, lived at nearby Wentworth Castle, which was purchased in 1708, in a competitive spirit, and strenuously rebuilt in a magnificent manner.
The English Baroque, brick-built, western range of Wentworth Woodhouse was begun in 1725 by Thomas Watson-Wentworth, (after 1728 Lord Malton) after he inherited it from his father in 1723. It replaced the Jacobean structure that was once the home of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, whom Charles I sacrificed in 1641 to appease Parliament. The builder to whom Wentworth's grandson turned for a plan for the grand scheme that he intended, was a local builder and country architect, Ralph Tunnicliffe, who had a practice in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.

WE Great Place present MAN ENGINE at Wentworth Woodhouse and Elsecar Heritage Centre.
The largest mechanical puppet ever constructed in Britain is coming to Yorkshire this month.
Man Engine, a 36ft (11m) tall miner powered by Volvo, will visit Barnsley and Rotherham as part of its 2018 Resurrection Tour.
The giant mechanical miner will visit Elsecar Heritage Centre in Barnsley and Wentworth Woodhouse near Rotherham from 23 to 24 June. The events will include theatrical shows, live music, fireworks and storytelling to celebrate the area’s iron and coal industrial heritage.
In 2017 Man Engine won ‘best arts project’ in the National Lottery Awards. The invention was made to mark the tenth anniversary of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape being added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
Yorkshire’s Man Engine festivities will begin at Elsecar Heritage Centre from 7pm on Saturday 23 June for the ‘after darker’ where pyrotechnics will light up the night sky. The celebrations will continue at Wentworth Woodhouse near Rotherham on Sunday 24 June from 12 noon with a 1940s vintage-themed picnic. Entertainment will include live music, street performers, craft activities and food and drink stalls.
The events have been funded by Great Place Wentworth and Elsecar - a three-year partnership between Barnsley Council, Rotherham Council and the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England.
Cllr Roy Miller, Barnsley Council’s Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “The arrival of Man Engine celebrates the iron and coal industrial heritage of both Elsecar and Wentworth in a big coming-together event.
“Mining was the backbone of Elsecar and Wentworth and an intrinsic part of their histories. So, it’s fitting that Man Engine should visit both of these great places in what will be a truly unmissable weekend.
“We can’t wait for people from across Yorkshire to see the star of our show and experience some spectacular white-hot pyrotechnics.”
Cllr Sarah Allen, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener Communities, said: “It’s a really exciting summer of events in Wentworth, with the Tour de Yorkshire, the Wentworth Music Festival and now the Man Engine!
“With Rotherham’s proud mining history, I hope that many people from across the borough will take this opportunity to come along and enjoy what promises to be an amazing spectacle.”

Great Place by Dan Ryder - Great Place Wentworth and Elsecar
Great Place Wentworth and Elsecar put the A(arts) into STEM creating some STEAM at the Get Up To Speed event at Magna in April 2018. We used the opportunity to engage with hundreds of young people around ideas of what makes a place great. We gifted the event a poet in residence who engaged with visitors and collected their words to feed into the Great Place poem that will help inform how we create events and what factors are needed to make events great.
Great Place Wentworth & Elsecar is a project funded by Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Arts Council England (ACE), looking at the heritage, culture and community engagement.
Great Place is led by Barnsley Council, representing a close partnership with Rotherham Council and Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust.cription
