Rotterdam, trams, canals, museums, Netherlands
Starting out at the Rotterdam train station, which is where you would probably be arriving when you come to Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. There's an excellent Tourist Information counter here where you can get a lot of good advice about the main sites you want to see in your visit.
The tram station out front is quite active with eight different tramlines running through it. You'll quickly reach anywhere in town from the central station.
There are very modern buildings in Rotterdam, and they are well planned with apartments in the downtown area and some parks and you've got the idyllic waterfront with the boat traffic and the apartments around it.
There is a culture history museum. There's an excellent art museum. And that's where we are heading soon in the program, show you a couple of fine museums.
First we walk along Westersingel canal, with parks along the banks of the canal, you've got some ducks quacking by and also it's an outdoor sculpture garden with fountains and benches and a wide promenade that makes for very easy and pleasant walking.
Then we visit a great museum, Boymans van Beuningen, which is one of the major art museums in the Netherlands, an amazing collection that spans from the Renaissance and earlier right up through modern design.
Then, the museum we are heading for next is all about people and culture history called the World Museum and English, or in Dutch, the name is Wereldmuseum.
The city population is 640,000 making it second largest after Amsterdam, but if you include the greater metropolitan area extending to the Hague, population totals 2.5 million. Rotterdam has got 38 skyscrapers and 352 high-rises with many more skyscrapers coming up soon.
There are nine different tramlines operating in Rotterdam, making this a very convenient way to get around, and they are thoroughly modernized. Although, in their beginnings, they were founded in 1878 as horse-drawn trams. In 1904 the first electric trams began service and gradually the horse wagons were phased out. By 1906 there was already five electric tramlines operating and then four more lines began in the next four years. The last horse cars stopped running by 1925. The maximum extent of Rotterdam's tramway network was 25 lines, which was reached in 1930.
Throughout the main cities of Europe, there has been a similar history of trams developing from horse to electric, and then declining, and in recent years, a resurgence in popularity of the system. Currently 40 different Dutch cities have operating tram systems, but only two have metros, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

The oldest recipes of the world or the beauty of tradition
The oldest recipes of the world or the beauty of tradition is an installation as part of the exhibition 'I cook therefore I am' of guest curator Abdelkader Benali in Wereldmuseum Rotterdam. A project of Studio Maaike Roozenburg in collaboration with Zcene Moving Media, Yale University, New Haven, Delft Technical University, Leiden University and Maher Al Sabbagh. An installation on the intersection of heritage, design and emerging technologies in which 3D digitalization, video mapping, cuneiform, 3D prototyping and culinary tradition meet.
Three cuneiform tablets from Mesopotamia form the oldest written source of culinary culture in the world. Excavated in present-day Iraq and Syria, they are now part of the Yale Babylonian Collection, New Haven U.S. These tablets of unfired clay are almost 4000 years old, damaged and extremely delicate. This makes them unfit to be accessible for a broad public or travel to The Netherlands for this exhibition.
3D prototyping are emerging technologies that offer new possibilities to render physical objects into digital data and vise versa, such as 3D-scanning and -printing. By using 3D scanning technology we were able to bring the cuneiform tablets outside the walls of the Yale Babylonian Collection and into the exhibition of the Wereldmuseum in Rotterdam. But besides this we where able to investigate the meaning of these objects for us here and now and share this with the visitor and the public. 3D prototyping technology was the means to this coal. We transferred the digital data of the cuneiform tablet into a physical object by 3D printing to hold and to be touched. By CNC milling we made an enlarged tablet in a specific kind of foam ideal for video projection.
In collaboration with chef Maher Al Sabbagh we looked for the traces of these 4000 year old recipes in contemporary cooking in the Middle East. Al Sabbagh, born in Damascus and living in Rotterdam brought with him to The Netherlands his extensive knowledge of preparing food. We selected three recipes now still popular in the Middle East, descendants so to speak of three recipes described on the Mesopotamian tablets. Recipes that are being prepared, altered and refined for ages manifesting the beauty of tradition. On film we documented ingredients, dishes and the process of preparing them.
The archeologists and researchers of Leiden University have an extensive collection of objects native to the Middle East. Among them cooking utensils from the Mesopotamian era excavated in Syria and Iraq: a cooking pot, grinding stone and bowl with traces of garlic. Objects mentioned in the recipes on the cuneiform tablets and kept by our team on film.
Blend together in an installation all these elements make the oldest recipes of the world tactile again and link present day culinary culture to its origin. In a broader perspective it touches on the phenomenon of culture as a process in which migration of people, objects and ideas play an important role.
De exhibition 'I cook therefore I am' will be on show at the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam, The Netherlands between February 10th till July 30th 2017.

What to do in Rotterdam City - Netherlands
The second largest city in the Netherlands, Rotterdam lies on both banks of the Nieuwe Maas, the tidal southern arm of the Rhine, where it's joined by the little River Rotte. It's also the world's largest port, home to the massive Europoort facility through which so much freight passes on its way to and from the continent. Although almost completely destroyed by German air attacks in 1940, central Rotterdam was energetically rebuilt after the war and re-planned with modern shopping streets, residential districts, and high-rises, making it one of the most modern and architecturally interesting cities in Europe. Despite it's modernity, the city dates back to medieval times and was already prosperous by the 13th century, when a dam was built to separate the Rotte from the Nieuwe Maas (hence the city's name). Rotterdam has also long been important as a cultural hub, its early prosperity leading to the birth of Rotterdam's most celebrated citizen, the humanist Erasmus, born here in 1467. Today, it's as popular for its vibrant entertainment options as it is for its many fine museums, splendid architecture, and maritime tourist attractions.
The Old Harbor (Oude Haven) is a boat basin filled with restored historic boats, many of which are houseboats where their owners live. In good weather, you can sit outside in one of the many cafés or stroll around and watch the boats being painted or repaired. Signs identify the ages of the boats and show pictures of this area in its heyday as a commercial port and shipyard.
A short walk from here, Maritime Museum Rotterdam was established in 1873 and provides a fascinating look into the city's connection to the sea and its many waterways. The large collections cover the history of shipping and seafaring, including ship models, a reconstruction of a 2,000-year-old vessel, and numerous seafaring paintings. Another marine-related tourist attraction is the adjoining Harbor Museum, an open-air facility that's home to the wonderfully preserved 19th-century Buffel, an ironclad ram ship, as well as an old lightship (all told, more than 20 historic vessels are on display). Both facilities offer English-language guided tours. A recent addition to Rotterdam's roster of important old vessels is the SS Rotterdam, launched in 1958 and considered the finest Dutch-built passenger vessel. This sumptuously decorated vessel is now a hotel and museum, and one of the favorite things to do here is have lunch or dinner in its dining room.
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, one of the Netherlands' (and Europe's) most important art centers, is known for its superb collections of paintings, sculptures, and applied and decorative arts from across Europe. Painters of the 14th to 16th centuries are particularly well represented, with works by Hubert and Jan van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The 17th century is represented by Rembrandt and Rubens (26 of the latter's works can be viewed), while later centuries are represented by Monet, Gauguin, and Van Gogh. Modern painters represented include Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall. Another museum of note is the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam, an ethnographic museum established in 1883, with excellent displays of artifacts from ancient and modern cultures from around the world.
Address: Museumpark 18, 3015 CX Rotterdam
Great St. Lawrence Church - Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk - is all that's left of Rotterdam's medieval buildings, most of which were destroyed during WWII. In Grote Kerkplein, the late Gothic church dates from the 15th century and was built on once marshy ground giving the building a peculiar lean that was only halted after its foundation was rebuilt in 1650. It was heavily damaged in bombings, but was fully restored at the end of the war.
Upon entering the church, you'll be struck by the beauty of the bright interior, an effect heightened by the colored glass of its windows. The church is famous for its three Danish organs, the largest of which stands on a marble base on the inside wall of the tower. The bronze doors of the main entrance, on the theme of War and Peace, are by the Italian artist Giacomo Manzu, and in front of the church is a statue of Rotterdam's most famous son, Erasmus. Guided tours are available, although the small admission fee includes a very informative audio guide.
Address: Grotekerkplein 15, Rotterdam
Rotterdam is home to many fine examples of modern architecture, much of it inspired by the city's waterside setting as well as a response to the devastation of WWII. Pushing the architectural envelope to the max are the city's famous Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen). Designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom, this block of houses, with their unique cube-shaped upper stories, are clearly visible from a walk through the Old Harbor, and one of them, the Show Cube, is open to visitors and contains displays on the design and history of the buildings.

Rotterdam Travel Guide - Netherlands Joyful Times
Rotterdam Travel Guide - Netherlands Joyful Times
Rotterdam is a municipality and city in the Dutch province of South-Holland, situated in the west of The Netherlands and part of the Randstad. The municipality is the second largest in the country (behind Amsterdam), with a population of approximately 601,300 people and over 2.9 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area (combined with The Hague).
The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe. From 1962 to 2004, it was the world's busiest port; then it was superseded by Shanghai. Now Rotterdam is the fourth biggest port in the world. Rotterdam is known as a city of architecture. A few square kilometres of the city centre offers a complete overview of what the twentieth century has produced in terms of modern architecture. Due to this more modern atmosphere and the presence of several relatively high buildings (for Dutch standards), the city is especially interesting for Dutch people to visit.
The atmosphere of Rotterdam is absolutely distinct from other Dutch cities. The mentality can best be described as 'can do'. From the waiters you meet to the businessmen and the people who have just arrived as migrants, all of them breathe a dynamic optimism of getting forward with things and their town. The modern looks of the city, the bustle and its building spree all add to this impression. That said, you might also find that people are sometimes somewhat too straight with you. And yes, the city is not the cosiest, or the most picturesque of towns, especially on drab winter days. But; get acquainted with this small metropolis, easiest done on days of one of the festivals with nice weather, and you will come to love it.
Like any city in The Netherlands, Rotterdam is very, very bicycle-friendly. Getting around by bike is probably the fastest way of travel within the city. There are separate bike lanes on most major streets and there are separate traffic lights for bicyclists. Avoid getting your tire in the tram rails. Always cross tram rails at an angle. Always lock your bike securely when leaving it, preferably chained to a fixed object.
There are five metro lines operated by RET. Lines A (green), B (yellow) and C (red), share tracks between Schiedam Centrum and Capelsebrug and offer an east-west connection. Lines D (light blue) and E (blue, also known as RandstadRail) share tracks between Rotterdam Centraal and Slinge and offer a north-south connection. Interchange between all lines is possible on Beurs station in the city center.
The area around metrostation Blaak, called Oude haven (Old Harbour), is not only worth seeing but has also a lot of pubs and restaurants. The Rotterdam dining scene is developing very fast with new restaurants opening very often. While most of the attention focusses on new Michelin-star aspiring places, there is very much a trend towards high quality mid-range restaurants offering French/Dutch cuisine.
Innovation here takes many forms, and one that is immediately apparent is the quality of the coffee served in the city's huge array of cafes. Until recently, there was only one coffee roastery in Rotterdam – the excellent Man Met Brill – but at last count there were 12, all roasting direct-trade beans to caffeinate coffee-obsessed locals. Cafes of every type (hipster hole-in-the-walls to traditional grand cafes) dot the city streets, functioning as work and study spaces for the digital generation as well as places where friends and family catch up over a drink or casual meal.
