Newbury College Celebrate 70 Years At West Berkshire Museum
An exhibition of Newbury College’s history is on display at the West Berkshire Museum and the college is hoping to get as many stories as possible from former students and staff members as they celebrate their 70th years in the community.
The college was established in 1948 as the Newbury Institute of Further Education, and was one of the first colleges nationally to offer continued academic studies to young people.

Newbury is a historic market town and the principal town in the west of Berkshire, England and has its own civil parish as well as the administrative headquarters of West Berkshire. Newbury spans both sides of the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal, and has a handsome town centre spread around its large market square.
The historic town centre retains a rare medieval Cloth Hall and an adjoining half timbered granary, an unusually large 15th century parish church, along with a wealth of attractive 17th and 18th century listed buildings. Newbury is famous for its racecourse, and as the headquarters of Vodafone UK and software company Micro Focus International.
The town of Newbury is located in the valley of the River Kennet, 26 miles (42 km) south of Oxford, 25 miles (40 km) north of Winchester, 27 miles (43 km) south east of Swindon and 20 miles (32 km) west of Reading. Newbury lies on the edge of the picturesque Berkshire Downs; part of the North Wessex Downs Area of outstanding natural beauty.
Newbury lies in south central West Berkshire, 3 miles (4.8 km) north of the Hampshire/ West Berkshire county boundary. In the suburban village of Donnington lies the part-ruined Donnington Castle and the surrounding hills are home to some of the country's most famous racehorse training grounds (centred on nearby Lambourn). To the south is a narrower range of hills including Walbury Hill and a few private landscape gardens and mansions such as Highclere Castle. The local economy is inter-related to that of the eastern M4 corridor, which has most of its industrial, logistical and research businesses close to Newbury, mostly around Reading, Bracknell, Maidenhead and Slough.
Newbury spans the River Kennet, the valley of which has for millennia formed an important east–west transport route, served by the Kennet and Avon Canal, and the London to Exeter (via Taunton) Line, one of three routes from London to the West. Today, Newbury is served by two railway stations, Newbury and Newbury Racecourse, which both lie on the Reading to Plymouth Line.

West Berkshire Museum Takeover
Inspired by the Window to My World exhibition at the West Berkshire Museum we are holding a charity exhibition with the theme Through the Modern Ages
We hope to invite as many people as possible to view our drop-in exhibition, but we also want to challange any misconceptions people might have about how museums can't be interactive.
The day will invlove:
A fashion show - Inspired by the theme Through the Modern Ages and having a fun look at how trends have changed from the 1960's!
As well as a photography exhibition that tells a story about modern life, and a shoe-box memrobelia display with lots of interesting things to see.
We're also looking forward to enjoying the day with interactive games, and reminicing with some childhood sweets and homemade cakes!
Entry to the Museum is free (although we do encourage donations that will go towards the local community)
This is an indoor event so the weather should be no problem!
The museum also has a children's play area, 10 exhibition rooms, and a cafe which seres a variety of drinks and light snacks
How We Remember At West Berkshire Museum
This autumn West Berkshire Heritage marks the end of the First World War with a series of events to mark the centenary of Armistice. A new exhibition ‘How We Remember’ has opened at West Berkshire Museum on Wednesday 3 October and is an exhibition of personal histories of a selection of West Berkshire soldiers who fought in world War 1. it was good to go along to West Berkshire Museum to find out more about the memories behind personal treasured items from local families whose loved ones served in the war.....

I found this on an old cine film of my dad's. I've transferred it to DVD and put also on here so my daughter can see it. I was 15 at the time.....a long time ago. The last few seconds is the A343 at Wash Common. This is the old railway bridge, which is now where the Newbury by-pass crosses.

Didcot is a railway town and civil parish in the administrative county of Oxfordshire, England, 10 miles south of Oxford, 8 miles east of Wantage and 15 miles north west of Reading. Didcot is noted for its railway heritage, having been a station on Brunel's Great Western Main Line from London Paddington, opening in 1844.
Today the town is known for its railway museum and power stations, and is the gateway town to the Science Vale: three large science and technology centres in the surrounding villages of Milton (Milton Park), Culham (Culham Science Centre) and Harwell (Harwell Science and Innovation Campus which includes the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory). The town was historically part of Berkshire until 1974 when there was county boundary change due to the Local Government Act 1972.
The area around present-day Didcot has been inhabited for at least 9000 years; a large-scale archaeological dig between 2010 and 2013 produced finds from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Iron Age and Bronze Ages. In the 1500s Didcot was a small village of landowners, tenants and tradespeople with a population of around 120. The oldest house still standing in Didcot is White Cottage, a Grade II listed wood shingle roofed, timber-framed building on Manor Road which was built in the early 16th century.
Didcot's junction of the routes to London, Bristol, Oxford and to Southampton via the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway (DN&S) made the town militarily important, especially during the First World War campaign on the Western Front and the Second World War preparations for D-Day.
Formed by the Great Western Society in 1967 to house its collection of Great Western Railway locomotives and rolling stock, now housed in Didcot's 1932-built Great Western engine shed. The station was originally called Didcot but then renamed Didcot Parkway in 1985 by British Rail; the site of the old GWR provender stores, which had been demolished in 1976 (the provender pond was kept to maintain the water table) was made into a large car park to attract passengers from the surrounding area. An improvement programme for the forecourt of the station began in September 2012 and was expected to take around fifteen months. This was viewed as being the first phase of better connecting the station to Didcot town centre.
