West Chester Railroad: The Suburban Heritage Line
Like us on Facebook!
The West Chester Railroad resides in the scenic suburbs of Chester and Delaware Counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Operating along the SEPTA West Chester Branch since 1997, it is the only tourist operation that regularly operates on SEPTA-owned trackage. No longer powered by the overhead catenary, the line is host to rather rare forms of diesel power such as first and second generation ALCO/Montreal Locomotive Works and EMD engines. Today's train is both pushed and pulled by the railroad's ex-Canadian Pacific MLW C424 #4213, painted in a striking gray, black and gold color scheme, along with both former Pennsylvania Railroad and Reading Company coaches. Now, please enjoy this short video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed on August 25th, 2019.
West Chester Railroad: Spring EMD Action!
On a beautiful spring afternoon, Penn Rail Videos was trackside at the West Chester Railroad. On this day, ex-B&O GP9 #6499 was motive power for the excursions, and performed nicely for our camera. We'll see the old veteran at several familiar locations along the line. The horns in this video are a Wabco AA-2 on the MU car, a Prime 990 with 2, 3, and 4 bells (so not a true 990), and a Prime 920. The 990 can be heard at Locksley and West Chester, and the 920 will give us a toot near the Wiggins Tree farm.
West Chester Railroad, Trains and Soldiers
On August 25 2019, the West Chester Railroad Lines hosted our annual Trains and Soldiers weekend to show case some of the old equipment from that time. One of which was an old jeep. The engine powering the train was one of our 2 MLW/ALCO c424s # 4213.

On the afternoon of Sunday, September 17, 2017 I ventured about fifteen minutes from my house over to the West Chester Railroad. After hearing that their RS-18u would be back in service and running that day I figured I'd take a ride over. After getting out the door a little late I started the day off at the Westtown Art Gallery which used to be an actual Station for the Ex-SEPTA West Chester Branch. After SEPTA stopping service to West Chester in the 80's the WCRR has called the line home and has used it ever since for special charters, to daily tourist trains out of West Chester to Glen Mills and back. You can check out there website at the bottom of the description for upcoming events and specials. After being out for several years with the main reason being a Bearing in the Front Traction Motor going out it was nice to see the engine come back to life. Even though this was mainly a Test Run of the 1803 it was still nice to see and witness it run once again. We will also get the train at a few other spots along the line.
So sit back, relax & enjoy!
As always we thank you for watching!

The West Chester Railroad: At the Former WCU SEPTA Station
The first major train station we met at was at the West Chester University stop:
Its along East Nields Street located about a 1/2 mile away from West Chester University.Students and professors at the State Normal School as well as local residents had pleaded with the PRR to construct a station at East Nields Street to avoid walking six blocks north to the Market Street Station. The PRR refused to do so, though trains stopped at Nields Street occasionally after World War I. As late as 1962, residents were still urging the financially ailing PRR to build a station at Nields Street, and by 1965, the PRR offered to do so in exchange for permission to demolish the Market Street Station.[1] However, West Chester Borough Council opposed that plan in the hope that Market Street Station would become a downtown transportation center. The Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission allowed the PRR to vacate the dilapidated Market Street station. It was only after the station was demolished in 1968 that PRR's successor, Penn Central, constructed a small metal passenger shelter at the location, initially named Nields Street and later West Chester University station
This used to be a stop along SEPTA's R3 West Chester Line. However; SEPTA discontinued regular passenger service in September 1986, due to deteriorating track conditions and Chester County's desire to expand facilities at Exton Station on SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line.

Althought not abandoned, this place has some beautiful Victorian Architecture. I just had to add it to my collection. The Mansion originated as a residence, built by Mr. And Mrs. John Hulme, in the late eighteen hundreds. In 1882, Mr. and Mrs. James Smith purchased the Mansion and surrounding grounds and converted it into a park and summer home. After Mrs. Smith's death in 1893, the property was willed to the Philadelphia Protestant Episcopal City Mission. At this time, it was used as a convalescent home for women. The Westtown Township purchased the Mansion and surrounding grounds some seventy years later. Source: OakborneMansion.org
