Regenerative Medicine Research Center at Sichuan University West China Hospital
Bioprinting Patient’s-own Stem Cells for a Truly Personalised Medicine.
A personalised approach to medicine is essential to improving quality of life and lowering medical costs. The current disease-based approach, waiting until a disease fits an existing treatment plan means damage is done to patients despite our best efforts. A new personalized approach is possible using regenerative medicine.
The Regenerative Medicine Research Center at Sichuan University West China Hospital has developed a new technology to re-establish tissue injury signals in scarred tissues, such as chronic ischemic infarct heart tissue. This is used in combination with a 3D bio-printing technology to rejuvenate the self-repair process. Together, this novel process is called Destination-Engaged Vector Evolving Lineage Organ Regeneration, or DEVELOR.
In trials, stem cells are taken, propagated, and processed to constitute a fundamental unit of bioink, called Biosynsphere. This newly developed bioink is applied to a bioprinter, producing a vascular graft composed of biosynspheres, adhering to a synthetic vessel to form a hybrid vascular graft for vascular transplantation. So far animal trials have been very successful, and approval for clinical trials by the China FDA as well as the FDA is expected soon.
The possibilities of DEVELOR are recognised worldwide, and researchers aim to use this new technology to provide regenerative therapies for a range of chronic diseases, reaching heart patients, and many others, with this life-changing therapy.

HONG KONG: HERBAL MEDICINE
Cantonese/Mand/Eng
Lizards, sea horses, scorpions and snakes are not the kind of ingredients that most Westerners normally turn to when they are feeling sick.
But in China herbal medicine is big business, and if Hong Kong has its way, in ten years time it will be at the centre of this lucrative trade.
The project has been dubbed herbal port.
Chinese medicine has been around for over twenty-three centuries and the numerous shops that sell herbal medicines in Hong Kong reflect its importance to the Chinese people.
Chinese medicine comes from all aspects of nature: animals, plants and minerals.
In Hong Kong's Wan Chai market,. Dr. Poon Pak-sun sees a steady stream of patients amid a colourful array of exotic herbs and animals.
There is no privacy here.
Patients listen to Dr. Poon delivering his prognosis on their health, whilst the next one waits in the queue.
Clinical is not the word a Westerner would use to describe the atmosphere of Dr. Poon's stall.
Wood is used, rather than aluminum, to grind and mix the patients medicines.
Various dried herbs in glass containers are on display, ready to be mixed or bunched together to cure common colds, indigestion and other non-serious ailments.
The dried animals, or bits of dried animal, may not look pretty, but they clearly don't put off the locals.
Lizards, according to Dr. Poon Pak-sun, can be good for curing backaches, or weak kidneys.
And when combined with Chinese herbs, 'lizard' it can cure other ailments.
As a soup it can cure coughs.
But it isn't quite so effective for Malaria.
To cure that you need to borrow a snake skin.
And if you are feeling a bit stressed out, and need to be relaxed, then a scorpion is the best means - although what you are supposed to do with it exactly is uncertain.
Is Chinese medicine better than its western equivalent?
Dr. Poon says they complement each other.
And to reassure the squeamish, Dr. Poon tell us that they don't just hand out medicines that can be poisonous to unsuspecting clients.
SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese)
For medicines that are potentially poisonous, we will give them special processing. Many western medicines are actually made from Chinese medicine and are prescribed to ordinary citizens. This is an undeniable fact.
SUPER CAPTION: Poon Pak-sun, a Chinese doctor
At Hong Kong's Baptist University, they follow through on what Dr Poon's says about western medicines.
Here the pharmacists use Western science to prepare and process traditional Chinese medicines.
But although the doctors and nursing attendants dress in white and have a room set aside for private consultations, the theory behind the practice is still strongly linked to the traditional Chinese understanding of the body and mind.
But that is where the similarity ends.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We regard the whole body as an integral part. Each is very closely related to the other. That probably is the major difference.
SUPER CAPTION: Dr Albert W N Leung, Associate Professor and Course Leader of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University
Chinese medicine regards the human body as part of the universe.
Chinese medical practitioners diagnose the man according to the Ying and Yang, earth and heaven, winter and summer, cold and hot, wet and dry - at the core of it's philosophy is the restoration of harmony in the system.
Its common sense logic has attracted a following through generations.
But its use and development has largely been unregulated.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
In modernizing Chinese medicine, from conducting studies on its raw material to marketing of the final products, the entire process requires a stable quality and quantity control system.

China - Alternative medicine revival

Xi Yuan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Beijing does
not look like a clinic on the leading edge of modern medicine. But here, and increasingly around the world, people are putting their health in the hands of traditional healers. The science on which it is based goes back thousands of years. Yet surprisingly China currently commands only a small fraction of the world market in Chinese herbal treatments despite its long history of using the preparations. China has an ageing population and must increasingly search for cost-effective treatment for the elderly. Western consumers are eager for natural green remedies for their ailments, but doctors in the West rarely have more than a college level biology understanding of the practices.

FORBIDDEN CITY (PALACE MUSEUM) BEIJING, CHINA
Forbidden City, also known as the Palace Museum, and Gu Gong in Chinese, lies at the city center of Beijing, and once served as the imperial palace for 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368 - 1911). It was first built throughout 14 years during the reign of Emperor Chengzu in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Ancient Chinese Astronomers believed that the Purple Star (Polaris) was in the center of heaven and the Heavenly Emperor lived in the Purple Palace. The Palace for the emperor on earth was so called the Purple City. It was forbidden to enter without special permission of the emperor. Hence its name 'The Purple Forbidden City', usually 'The Forbidden City'.
Now known as the Palace Museum, it is to the north of Tiananmen Square. Rectangular in shape, it is the world's largest palace complex and covers 74 hectares. Surrounded by a 52-meter-wide moat and a 10-meter-high wall are more than 8,700 rooms. The wall has a gate on each side. The distance between the south Meridian Gate (Wumen) and the north Gate of Divine Prowess (Shenwumen) is 961 meters (1,051 yards), while the distance between the east and west gates is 753 meters (823 yards). There are unique and delicately structured towers on each of the four corners of the curtain wall. These afford views over both the palace and the city outside.
