In 2010, when Canadian brothers Colin Pyle and Ryan Pyle set out from Shanghai on a motorcycle journey that had never previously been attempted, they thought they had some idea of what lay ahead of them. It was a misconception that became evident by the end of Day 1. But, despite the many challenges they faced, 65 days and 12,000 miles later they'd succeeded in circumnavigating China.
In this third episode from Ryan Pyle Productions, Ryan and Colin Pyle leave their moon-scape camping ground at Turpan and head across the salt flats to Xinjiang, China's Wild West. In a few hours they travel from 150m below sea level to 3300m above sea level in freezing temperatures.

The Music of China's Nomads - Part 1: Urumqi, the Urban Setting
The search for the most traditional sounds of Chinas Kazakhs starts in the bustling and sophisticated city of Urumqi, the provincial capital of western Xinjiang Province. According to Chinas 2000 census, of Urumqis more than 2 million inhabitants, only 2.3 percent are Kazakhs. Han Chinese account for 75.3 percent of the population, while Uighurs comprise another 12.8 percent. Since July 5, Urumqi has been the scene of interethnic unrest.
Kazakhs are struggling to maintain their distinct cultural identity in Xinjiang. Not only are demographics working against them, but their traditional pastoral and nomadic ways are running hard up against the reality of urbanization. Although Kazakhs have much in common with Uighurs, including the Muslim faith and their speaking of mutually intelligible Turkic languages, their cultures nevertheless are different. And Kazakhs want to keep it that way. Having survived the trauma of Chinas Cultural Revolution, some Kazakhs are taking advantage of reforms introduced in the 1980s, and are making a spirited attempt to revive and preserve their traditions.
Music has become a main avenue for cultural revival efforts. The Kazakhs musical tradition centers on a two-stringed instrument, the dömbra. These days, Kazakh-language television stations, broadcasting out of Urumqi, provide almost daily concerts and shows featuring the dömbra. The instrument is also found in most Kazakh homes, regardless of whether or not it is played. Book and CD stores in central Urumqi sell the recordings and posters of dömbra-masters, along with posters of Kazakh folk heros and leaders.
The revival in popularity of the dömbra has come to symbolize the Kazakh communitys cultural struggle in Xinjiang. And since the Soviet collapse of 1991, it has also helped foster cross-border ties with ethnic kin in Kazakhstan proper.
In the following photo essay, Han Chinese ethnomusicologist, Professor Zhou Ji, a leading expert on the music of Xinjiangs ethnic communities, discusses the importance of the dömbra in the Kazakh community. He also highlights the instruments role in transmitting the Kazakh communitys history.
Ancient Uyghur Civilization (1)-Cave art by ancient Uyghurs
At the end of the 19th and the first few decades of the 20th century,scientific and archaeological expeditions to the region along the Silk Road in East Turkestan led to the discovery of numerous Uyghur cave temples, monastery ruins, wall paintings, statues, frescoes, valuable manuscripts, documents and books. Members of the expedition from Great Britain, Sweden, Russia, Germany, France, Japan, and the United States were amazed by the treasure they found there, and soon detailed reports captured the attention on an interested public around the world. The relics of these rich Uyghur cultural remnants brought back by Sven Hedin of Sweden, Aurel Stein of Great Britain, Gruen Wedel and Albert von Lecoq from Germany, Paul Pelliot of France, Langdon Warner of the United States, and Count Ottani from Japan can be seen in the Museums of Berlin, London, Paris, Tokyo, Leningrad and even in the Museum of Central Asian Antiquities in New Delhi. The manuscripts, documents and the books discovered in Eastern Turkestan proved that the Uyghurs had a very high degree of civilization.
Tarim basin buddhist wall paintings
The murals in the Kizil Thousand-Buddhist Caves are reputed as The most beautiful murals in Central Asia. They are found in 81 caves with a total area of more than 10,000 square meters (11,960 yards). The diamond grid pattern is the most impressive feature in the caves. There is a story about Buddha's reincarnation in every gird. Each story was portrayed by a single picture instead of a series of pictures.
Besides the themes of Buddha, Bodhisattva, Arhat, Flying apsaras, and Buddhist fables, a variety of depictions on production and daily life, farming, hunting, pastures, riding, mountains and rivers in the West Region, animals, birds and ancient architectures can also be seen in the Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves. The styles are not limited to the local arts.
The earlier caves took the shape similar to Bamian Caves and the murals suggested the influence of Gandhara arts, a Buddhist visual art prevailing in today's Northwestern Pakistan and Eastern Afghanistan in First Century B.C. and Seventh Century A.D. The written documents from the Kizil Thousand-Buddha Cave were composed in Tocharian B language, a branch of the Indo-European language family that originated in central Asia during the first millennium.

Die China Expedition – Erstbesteigung des Berges Xuelian Feng. Im fernen China wollen fünf junge Männer auf völlig unbekannten Wegen den 6500 Meter hohen Gipfel des Xuelian Feng besteigen. Aus einer Vielzahl von Bewerbern aus der ganzen Schweiz hat der Schweizerische Alpenclub SAC das Team dieser jungen Bergsteiger zusammengestellt. Die Expedition führt die jungen Bergsteiger an ihre körperlichen Grenzen und zeigt ihnen, dass Freundschaft oft erfüllender sein kann als Erfolg.
Mit mehr als 6000 Berggipfeln höher als 5000 m ü. M. ist China eine verlockende Herausforderung für die jungen Bergsteiger, die nicht auf ausgetretenen Pfaden unterwegs sein wollen. Die sechs Schweizer haben vor, im abgelegenen Tian Shan-Gebirge im Nordwesten von China ihre Zelte aufzuschlagen. Vom Basislager auf 3500 m ü. M. aus wollen sie versuchen, den Xuelian Feng zu besteigen, der mit 6500 m ü. M. alle Gipfel der Umgebung überragt. Während der mehrwöchigen Expedition im Ausland erleben die jungen Männer Höhen und Tiefen
Nach fast drei Jahren Vorbereitung startet das SAC Expeditionsteam unter der Leitung von Denis Burdet, einem der erfahrensten Bergsteiger der Schweiz. Nicolas, Sébastien, Lukas Roman und Sebastian machen sich auf zum grossen Abenteuer. Mit Flugzeug, Überlandbus und schliesslich einem Treck von zwei Dutzend Pferden reisen die Nachwuchs-Bergsteiger und ihr Lead Guide in das menschenleere Gebiet.
Der Film zeigt, wie das Team erste Akklimatisations-Touren durchführt und den beschwerlichen Weg über einen zerklüfteten Gletscher zum Fuss ihres Wunsch-Berges vorbereitet. Die sechs Schweizer werden von hochsommerlichem Schneefall überrascht, haben mit Verletzungen zu kämpfen, treiben vor dem grossen Aufstieg in einer nächtlichen Zeremonie Rababou, den bösen Berggeist aus – und müssen ständig mit dem Scheitern ihres Vorhabens rechnen.
