If you are looking for where to surf on the South Island then we have the activity for you today. We are currently staying in Bazils Hostel in Westport which is not only a cool and colourful backpackers hostel in New Zealand. The time has finally come to join Bazils Surf School and do some surfing in Westport!
We join fellow backpackers and hostel WWOOFers for a morning at North Beach in Westport where we get a surf lesson in Westport. As beginner surfers, we get heaps to learn how to surf in New Zealand. Westport is well worth considering when looking for New Zealand surf lessons.
We spend all morning seeing what it’s like to surf on the South Island before heading back to the Bazils Hostel. On the evening, the Kiwi Experience bus arrives so we join the Kiwi Experience bus passengers for a bonfire on the beach in Westport. We drink and toast marshmallows around the beach bonfire in Westport with Kiwi Experience.

Welcome to Westport and The Northern West Coast
A Guide to Westport, New Zealand
I spent a few days in Westport, New Zealand during my travels. While in this rainy West Coast town that I witnessed many people passing over. I really enjoyed it and wanted to share it with you.
There is the beach and all the water sports and activities that you would expect. Westport is know for being a good surf spot in New Zealand so take to the waves if you're up to it.
There are also paths and bushwalks if you prefer to stay on land like the Millennium Walkway and the Cape Foulwind Walkway. And of course, there is the seal colony to see near Cape Foulwind.

So we are now on the beautiful South Island, enjoy all that it has to offer!, Sadly there was a cyclone in the area of Abel Tasman National park a few weeks before this, and the road is closed because of damage, so we were unable to get to the Abel Tasman National Park!, but its on our list of things to do while here! So for now enjoy this tastes of Westport, a great spot to locate yourself on the west coast because it is near the Oparara Arches and the Punakaiki Pancake rocks and Blowholes. Both of these things are something you should see while on the South Island. Beautiful Creations of Nature! West Coast Surf - Tauranga Bay
Experience surfing at a stunning location on the West Coast of the South Island- Tauranga Bay! Providing both first timers with a safe environment to learn in as well as providing world class waves for more experienced surfers.
Offering lessons for new surfers and coaching for the more advanced levels. Whatever your needs Mark will provide a unique, safe, fun and informative experience for you.
Tauranga Bay is surrounded by beautiful walks and hosts a seal colony that has an excellent viewing platform and views out to the Tasman sea. The cliff top walk takes you along the edge of the coastline to the lighthouse and beyond to Cape Foulwind and the Star Tavern. There are numerous accommodation options in the area including our own place West Coast Surf Retreat where we can offer package deals on surf and stay.
OKARITO WEST COAST NEW ZEALAND 2019
Okarito is a magical spot for nature lovers and the ornithologically inclined. Set on a sandspit snug beneath the Southern Alps, 25km from Franz Josef Township, the land folds towards Okarito Lagoon, combining rainforest and wetland to great effect.
Renowned for its animated estuary and boisterous Tasman Sea beyond, this area has always been a haven for birdlife.
For Maori making regular visits to the area since their arrival an estimated 600 years ago, the region would've been a giant pantry with kai from land, sea and sky keeping the people well provisioned.
In fact Okarito is Maori for place of the young bulrush shoots which are said to be rather tasty when picked young.
The Terrace track
This easy walk winds a short way along the bush-clad terraces at the south end of the village.
There is no access beyond the bridge due to a slip and you will need to return the way you came.
Take a torch and explore this walk at night to see glow-worms in the forest, especially under and around large fallen trees alongside the track.
