West Coast Wilderness Trail - Gravel bike journey
The West Coast of the South Island is rapidly becoming New Zealand’s premier multi-day bike packing destination, you’ve got the Heaphy in the North, followed by the Old Ghost Road (surely being one of the top 10 in the world), the new and nearly finished Paparoa Trail and finally, the West Coast Wilderness trail. I’m not sure if too many other regions can compete with this many high class, multi-day trails.

OKARITO WEST COAST NEW ZEALAND 2019
Okarito is a magical spot for nature lovers and the ornithologically inclined. Set on a sandspit snug beneath the Southern Alps, 25km from Franz Josef Township, the land folds towards Okarito Lagoon, combining rainforest and wetland to great effect.
Renowned for its animated estuary and boisterous Tasman Sea beyond, this area has always been a haven for birdlife.
For Maori making regular visits to the area since their arrival an estimated 600 years ago, the region would've been a giant pantry with kai from land, sea and sky keeping the people well provisioned.
In fact Okarito is Maori for place of the young bulrush shoots which are said to be rather tasty when picked young.
The Terrace track
This easy walk winds a short way along the bush-clad terraces at the south end of the village.
There is no access beyond the bridge due to a slip and you will need to return the way you came.
Take a torch and explore this walk at night to see glow-worms in the forest, especially under and around large fallen trees alongside the track.

Shantytown, West Coast.
Shantytown is a tourist attraction in the West Coast Region of the South Island of New Zealand. Located 10 km south of Greymouth, the town was constructed and opened in the early 1970s and consists of 30 plus re-created historic buildings making up a 19th-century gold-mining town. The town is surrounded by native forest, and is one of the region's most popular attractions.
Shantytown also contains a re-created narrow-gauge bush tram line that follows a 19th-century sawmill tram track from the Shantytown train station to a stop at the Infants Creek Sawmill and a terminus.
Other attractions include having an old time photo in costume taken, a holographic theatre show, and a playground. Short bush walks around the area lead to a surveyors monument and lookout.
The town's inter-denominational church, built in 1866, can be booked for weddings, Shantytown offers a cafe and souvenir shop, and is open all year round with the exception of Christmas Day.
