Puerto Rico - East to West and Everything in Between
Puerto Rico is a beautiful country with many great sights. We stayed at the El Conquistador, A Waldorf Astoria Resort in Fajardo for the first several nights. Enjoyed their private Isla Palomino, rode horses, swam with sea turtles and viewed their numerous coral reefs along its beaches. At night we kayaked to the Bioluminescent Bay only about 1/2 mile from the base of our Hotel, where the water glows blue at night. The local food is excellent and enjoyed Mofongo, Pinchos and their local rum DonQ for the first time. El Yunque National Forest was around 30 minutes from Fajardo and offers the only rain forest in the US. Traveling to the West coast (2.5 hr Drive ) we stopped at Cueva del Indio which has Petroglyphs and is the location where several Hollywood movies were filmed including: A Perfect Getaway, Pirates of the Caribbean , Lord of the Ring and several Discovery Documentaries about the caves history and bats and bees that have called it home for thousands of years. Then on the very west end we visited Crash Boat Beach with its colorful boats, clear water and excellent snorkeling. To finish off the trip we enjoyed Old San Juan visiting Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo de San Cristobol while staying La Concha - A Renaissance Resort in the Condado area of San Juan. We had a great time and September if their slower season which means no lines and beautiful beaches all to ourselves. Looking forward to our next trip their again and spending a whole day enjoying the beach adjacent to Cueva del Indio.

American Imperialism: Crash Course US History #28
In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain's hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. John will tell you how America turned this war into colonial possessions like Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and almost even got to keep Cuba. The US was busy in the Pacific as well, wresting control of Hawaii from the Hawaiians. All this and more in a globe-trotting, oppressing episode of Crash Course US History.

Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. As America transitioned from the 19th to the 20th century, she experimented with imperialism through war and annexation; one of the most lasting effects of this time was the annexation of Hawaii, America's 50th state:
America’s imperial aims continued for decades, particularly with the Monroe Doctrine:

Puerto Rico Does Golf Better
You might be surprised to know that golf helped put Puerto Rico on the tourist map.
The gentleman's game goes back to the 1950s, when Laurance Rockefeller built a luxury resort in Dorado and welcomed the biggest stars of the era to the Robert Trent Jones-designed East Course.
We've come a long way since those early days. Today, Puerto Rico boasts more than 24 courses, many of them designed by the sport's most legendary figures. Our geographic diversity gives golfers of all levels the option of playing on courses that face the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, or the lush foothills of the El Yunque rainforest.

Large Meteor Explodes Just West of Puerto Rico
This meteor exploded and lit up the sky just west of Puerto Rico. It also left a large area of ionized debris that most likely lingered for a very long time. The fragment that survived the explosion could have made landfall between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
It was captured on Nov 3, 2018 at 03:34:57 UTC. I used a Watec 902H camera facing west towards the Mona Passage and Mona Island.

TROPICAL Puerto Rican STREET FOOD TOUR | Piñones, Puerto Rico
During my trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico in Partnership with the Intercontinental San Juan, I decided to head out to Piñones to try some tropical authentic Puerto Rican Street Food!
25 Puerto Rican Dishes You Must Eat:
I arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico early in the morning and headed straight to the Intercontinental San Juan to check in and to show you my club level suite. My suite is huge!
From their I grabbed a quick 15 minute uber ride east to Piñones. This area has one road and their are tons of restaurants and kioskos (traditional huts) where they serve authentic Puerto Rican street food.
My first stop was at Donde Olga Bar & Restaurant to try a Bacalaito which is a salted cod pancake fritter and a Alcapurria which is fried green banana stuffed with crab or beef. Both of these Puerto Rican street foods are must tries when you visit Puerto Rico!
Next we walked over to El Barriles Restaurant to try some Mofongo with Seafood! Mofongo is fried plantain mash with seafood. This is the star of Puerto Rican street food dishes. It is so yummy mixed in with the seafood!
On our way to our next stop I stumbled on Ostiones Vivos Kiosko. This is a small hut serving local Puerto Rican ostras or oysters! They are small bite sized oysters but if you like oysters you will love them!
Our final stop is Sabores de Piñones where I tried two local specialities, Pionono is a stuffed fried plantain stuffed with beef and a Rellenos de Papa which is a fried mash potato stuffed with ground beef.
I think the Pionono was my favorite because it was so sweet but the Bacalaito and Mofogo were off the chain!
Big thanks to my friends at the Intercontinental San Juan:
