Grand Bahama Island 2017 - West End Ecology Tours
An unforgettable day in West End with West End Eco Tours on our visit to Grand Bahama Island during our photography project.
We had an amazing day meeting and feeding stingrays on Sandy Cay, snorkelling a wreck in shallow water where we saw some more rays and a moray eel. Headed out for some fishing, caught some barracuda, took them back home to fry for the best dinner and freshest fish you could ever have.

NEW! West End Ecology Tours - Stingray Experience @ Sandy Cay - Promo Video
Thanks to two great marine conservationists - Justin and Madison from Grand Bahama for creating a fantastic video of their Stingray Experience @ Sandy Cay. Included is footage of the lemon sharks and extreme close-ups of thousands of fish on the Boat Wreck located just off shore of Sandy Cay. Justin also helped to remove several Lionfish which is an invasive species now found throughout the Caribbean and is delicious to eat. This is an excellent representation of what guests will experience on the Stingray Feeding Tour. Be sure to set defaults to 1080p for best resolution.
Stingray Feeding | Compilation Promo Video 2 | West End, Grand Bahama
This video compilation #2 was intended to capture the wild STINGRAY FEEDING experiences of guests who have visited West End, Grand Bahama Island. Most humans have never met stingrays up close and these educational tours provide anyone interested in learning about a marine animal where there is very little scientific or research information about their natural habits.
The cay where the stingrays reside and filmed have been fed by humans for many years. Sometimes local fishers would visit the cay to clean their conch and fish from their daily catch and would feed the waste to the rays. This may be just one of the reasons why over 60 adult and juvenile stingrays inhabit the area and made it a permanent home to bear their young and rest on the sandy bottom.
Despite incidents where individuals may have been impaled by a stingray barb or sadly killed by one that unfortunately took Steve Irwin’s life. It is very rare that an unprovoked attack on humans would occur. Injuries from rays may happen when walking the beach where the stingray may be resting close to shore. Stingrays cover with sand to camouflage from sharks which are their natural predators. Stingrays do not randomly attack humans as many are led to believe.
Stingrays forage for their food along the bottom of the ocean or along the beach where they are seeking crustaceans including crabs, clams, fish remnants and other small shellfish.
For more than 10 years our focus has been on conservation best practices of marine resources and protection of all wildlife that frequent the West Grand Bahama region including endemic and migrating birds.

Tran Family Stingray Tour - West End, Grand Bahama Island
Every once in a while, you meet visitors who make quite an impression and the Tran Family from San Diego made a indelible mark that will not be forgotten soon. Let's see where do we begin - Dustin and Salene Tran along with their 5 children - Madison, McKenzie, Brandon, Chase, Riley and their Uncle James Tran were recommended to give us a try. They were looking for something unique, something that would give the children a memory of a lifetime. When they heard about the Stingrays it seemed interesting and Dustin really did not know how it would turn out but when we were done and ready to leave Sandy Cay no one wanted to head back to shore. Sad I know! :) After a short stop at Settlement Point Reef we moved quickly to the Boat Wreck where they were met by two rays and plenty of fish. Stopping at the Boat Wreck can be described as an underwater power aquarium in less than 8 feet of water. Once the children headed back to the boat it was time to head over to Sandy Cay where we immediately spotted stingrays and everyone got excited. After the briefing it was time to get to know the rays. All of the children wanted to jump right in but we had to take it slow as there were five children all wanting to feed these magnificent animals. This family was one of the most incredible and ecology conscious groups we have ever had on Sandy Cay. While the rest of the family snorkeled with the rays, Salene and baby Riley stayed at the shore and found the rays to be quite soothing as they sat in the water and just watched the rays swim around them – truly a memorable experience for her and the entire family. I truly hope they will come back and visit Grand Bahama again!

They have been residing on island for the past 3 years and are heading back home soon. I have a feeling they will be planning a return trip in the not to distant future.
West End Ecology Tours - Freeport News and Guests Feed The Stingrays and Meet the Sharks!
The Freeport News is our local newspaper on Grand Bahama Island and thanks to a dear friend she arranged for the reporter and photographer to visit Sandy Cay to experience the Stingrays. Today's video interaction typifies what all guests feel when they are up close to the rays fear. The inquisitive lemon sharks also showed up on time and interacted with the rays and guests. Without question they were all able to overcome their fears and shared a valuable learning experience about Bahamian Wildlife. Isn't education wonderful! (Watch at :53 seconds on the video for the stingray as she opens her mouth and takes in the fish - it is pretty amazing to watch)
Sandy Cay Sharks Oh My!
