Wiltshire Country Walk Avebury Stone Circle and West Kennet Long Barrow round
Our video is a guided walk in Wiltshire. Starting from Avebury World Heritage Site we walk past Silbury Hill to the West kennet Long Barrow. Then after by-passing the villages of West Kennett and East Kennett we continue to The Sanctuary and return to Avebury to walk round the Stone Circle and Henge.This is an easy to moderate walk on grass and gravel public footpaths, tracks and bridleways.
Elevation: approx lowest point 143.40m (470.47ft) approx highest point 193m (633.20ft) approx ascent 105.80m (347.11ft)
Approx 5.75 miles allow 3 hours using OS Explorer Map 157, Marlborough and Savernake Forest. This walk is done anti-clockwise.
Start point: Avebury, National Trust pay and display car park. The charge is £7 for all day.

So the weather was looking good so hoped on the bus to Avebury from Oxford you have to change at Swindon. Get the stagecoach S6 bus to Swindon bus station. Change bus at Swindon bus station get the stagecoach 49 to Avebury.
Its a hike i done before although i never camped on Milk hill before which is Wiltshire highest hill and the Second highest chalk hill in the UK. I have hiked up here before and camped neat Adams grave. The views from the chalk ridge are amazing it must be the most remote part of Wiltshire, Many times more stunning than the Ridgeway and not busy. I saw no one the whole time i was up there. I go as far to say its breathtaking there some thing magical about the Landscape here. If your visiting Oxford its well worth the ticket price.
Not only is it a walk to Wiltshire highest hill. Avebury is said have the worlds biggest stone circle it said by some to be 1000s of years old but the truth is no one knows when or why i think that what makes it so magical. Its a circle with a circle with in a village. There also many sites of unknown origin all around the area the age and reason unknown. Up the hill there is wansdyke you may have heard of Offa's dyke well wansdyke is not as long but the part of it in this area is just as impressive as any of Offa's dyke. Wansdyke is amazing you really should check it out.
So i did wild camp at milk hill putting tent up late and leaving early.
Milk Hill - is the highest point in the county of Wiltshire 295 m / 968 ft above sea level also the second highest chalk hill in the UK,. location of the Alton Barnes white horse. it is also the highest summit along a 50 km ridge extending all the way from the South Downs, across the southern Chilterns and into Wiltshire. It starting point for longest hang-glider flight ever in the UK on May 10, 2011 by Nev Almond. It was also the starting point for the longest paraglider flight in the UK, by Mark Watts on 3 August 2014: 275.5 kilometres, to near Felbrigg in Norfolk.

Wansdyke - Like Hadrian’s Wall, Offa’s Dyke and the Antonine Wall. Wansdyke is in the West Country south west England. It is the most mysterious of them all.
Avebury is a henge monument containing three stone circles, around the village of Avebury. it is said its largest megalithic stone circle in the world but there could be larger ones we do not know about. It is not possible to date or know how much its been altered over time. The purpose of of it is unknown.

ANCIENT WILTSHIRE PART 2 - WEST KENNET LONG BARROW [4K]
The West Kennet Long Barrow, also known as South Long Barrow, is a chambered long barrow located near the village of Avebury in the south-western English county of Wiltshire. Probably constructed in the thirty-seventh century BCE, during Britain's Early Neolithic period, today it survives in a partially reconstructed state.
Archaeologists have established that the monument was built by pastoralist communities shortly after the introduction of agriculture to Britain from continental Europe. Although representing part of an architectural tradition of long barrow building that was widespread across Neolithic Europe, the West Kennet Long Barrow belongs to a localised regional variant of barrows in Western Britain, now known as the Cotswold-Severn Group. Of these, it is part of a cluster of around thirty centring around Avebury in the uplands of northern Wiltshire.
Built out of earth, local sarsen megaliths, and oolitic limestone imported from the Cotswolds, the long barrow consisted of a sub-rectangular earthen tumulus enclosed by kerb-stones. Its precise date of construction is not known. Human bones were placed within the chamber, probably between 3670 and 3635 BCE, representing a mixture of men, women, children and adults. There is then an apparent hiatus in the use of the site as a place of burial, probably lasting over a century. Between 3620 and 3240 BCE it likely began to be re-used as a burial space, receiving both human and animal remains over a period of several centuries. Various flint tools and ceramic sherds were also placed within it during this time. In the Late Neolithic, the entrance to the long barrow was blocked up with the addition of large sarsen boulders. During the Later Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, the landscape around West Kennet Long Barrow was subject to the widespread construction of ceremonial monuments, among them the Avebury henge and stone circles, the West Kennet Avenue, The Sanctuary, and Silbury Hill.
During the Romano-British period, a small coin hoard was buried in the side of the long barrow. The ruin attracted the interest of antiquarians in the 17th century, while archaeological excavation took place in 1859 and again in 1955–56, after which it underwent reconstruction. Now under the guardianship of English Heritage, it is classified as part of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites UNESCO World Heritage Site and is open without charge to visitors all year around [WIKIPEDIA]

Avebury is a Spiritual Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, in southwest England. One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest stone circle in Europe. It is both a tourist attraction and a place of religious importance to contemporary Pagans.
Constructed around 2600 BCE, during the Neolithic, or 'New Stone Age', the monument comprises a large henge (a bank and a ditch) with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles situated inside the centre of the monument. Its original purpose is unknown, although archaeologists believe that it was most likely used for some form of ritual or ceremony. The Avebury monument was a part of a larger prehistoric landscape containing several older monuments nearby, including West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill.
By the Iron Age, the site had been effectively abandoned, with some evidence of human activity on the site during the Roman occupation. During the Early Middle Ages, a village first began to be built around the monument, which eventually extended into it. In the Late Medieval and Early Modern periods, locals destroyed many of the standing stones around the henge, both for religious and practical reasons. The antiquarians John Aubrey and William Stukeley however took an interest in Avebury during the 17th century, and recorded much of the site before its destruction. Archaeological investigation followed in the 20th century, led primarily by Alexander Keiller, who oversaw a project of reconstructing much of the monument.
Avebury is owned and managed by the National Trust, a charitable organisation who keep it open to the public. It has been designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument, as well as a World Heritage Site, in the latter capacity being seen as a part of the wider prehistoric landscape of Wiltshire known as Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites.

On a warm but windy day in May 2009, I headed back to the wonderful ancient landscape around the village of Avebury, Wilts. It is the centre of what I like to call Weird Wiltshire - and it is a term meant with all due respect! The landscape is surrounded by ancient Neolithic and Bronze Age stone circles, standing stones, henge, round and long barrows (burial mounds) and makes for a great day out, and a chance to escape the city!
As anyone who has seen any of my other videos knows, I am strictly an amateur, point and shoot merchant, just trying to capture what it's like to be there.

I love exploring, and I love motorbikes, so to me it makes perfect sense to combine to two and seek out adventures wherever I am able. I am no historian, I know very little about most of the places I visit, and mainly like to take in what I see without having researched the places as I feel it adds more to the exploration for my enjoyment. For this visit, I did do a little research as I felt it offered more to you the audience to do so.
I really wish I'd had the time and energy to get to more of the sites around Avebury, it is truly wonderful there with so so much to go and take a look at, and all for free too!
I find it utterly mind blowing how old these structures are, I wish we knew more about what they signified. The effort to build them is staggering, it would even be a challenge for us modern humans with machinery! Absolutely amazing stuff.
If you get the chance, do get down to Avebury, it is fantasticles :-)

The boys have an outing to three ancient prehistoric British monuments: Stonehenge, Avebury Stone Circle, and West Kennet Long Barrow, in the Wiltshire countryside, summer 1975. Back in those days, while it was still managed by English Heritage (then as now,) Stonehenge was completely open . The keeper, with his cap, even put children on the stones, and would take a picture of all of you sitting on one of the stones if you asked him nicely!

Avebury is the lesser known part of the Stonehenge and Avebury UNESCO site, but it is impressive. Some people think of it as a Stonehenge alternative, but I think both are definitely worth visiting.
Join us as I take you on a tour of Avebury and the associated Neolithic sites in Wiltshire, England. I will show you what to see in Avebury, England.
There are several Neolithic Wiltshire monuments that you must see during your day in Avebury. First, we visit the Avebury Stone Circle, which is the largest stone circle in the world. Next, I take you to see the West Kennett Avenue. Then, we visit Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow. Finally, we end our trip to Avebury at the Sanctuary.
