Pokai Bay on the West Side of Oahu
Located between the small boat harbor in Wai’anae and Kane’ilio Point, Pokai Bay is a popular beach for locals on Oahu’s leeward (west) coast and a good day trip for those staying at Ko’olina and looking for a bit of local flavor. A crescent shaped rock jetty prevents high surf from disrupting the tranquil waters, making this 15-acre beach park an extremely sheltered beach ideal for young swimmers, snorkeling and lap swimming. Additionally, beginning surfers will find the gentle surf off of the wide reef in the center of the bay conducive to learning. Fun Fact: Before being called Pokai Bay, it was called Malaea, which means “calm” or “serene.”
Highlights: A short drive south of the beach can conclude the day with a spiritual visit to the Ancient Hawaiian Temple site (Ku’ilioloa Heiau) which serves as a memorial where the ashes of loved ones have been scattered.
Water Sports: Swimming, snorkeling, fishing and surfing. The long crescent white sand beach is also a popular walking destination. Check out the surf-forecast.com for current conditions. Select Hawaii-Oahu, then Pokai Bay.
Parking: There is a public parking lot, which fills up early on weekends and additional parking can be found on Waianea Valley Road off of the Farrington Highway.
Shade: The 15-acre expanse offers a wonderful grassy area shaded by trees and often used for picnic gatherings.
Restaurant: Poka’i Bay Restaurant offers a variety of items from guava hotcakes to traditional mahi burgers.
Dangers: Despite its tranquility, the ocean is always to be enjoyed with proper safety protocol which is why you will find lifeguards on duty.
What’s in a name:
Poka’i: Poka’i Bay, named for the Hawaiian Chief Poka’i, who is said to have brought the first coconut palm tree to Hawaii.
Malaea which means “calm” or “serene.”
Ku’ilioloa Heiau This heiau: is named after a dog spirit, Ku’ilioloa, which literally means “the long dog Ku” said to have watched over travelers in this area.

Seeing a dolphin pod off Kaena Point with EŌ Wai'anae Tours
We had the greatest time on this dolphin cruise! This is a family owned business and they go above and beyond to give you a memorable experience! We were picked up from our hotel in Waikiki and drvien to the boat harbor on the west side. Then we went looking for dolphins and saw MANY! After that they took us to snorkel in open water where we saw many turtles and the crew dove down bringing us up various sea creatures to check out. But the fun wasn't over! They the took us to where we could play, jump off the boat, stand up paddle board! Were fed a great terry burger lunch with all the fixings. The crew was fantastic! We had both tourists and locals on the cruise and everyone had a great time. Thank you EŌ Wai'anae Tours! They also have horseback riding. I can't wait to try that next!

This is a short video taken from an iPhone during a hike from Yokohama Bay to Ka'ena Point, Oahu. The date was January 22, 2014 around 4pm. The Waimea Buoy had peaked earlier that morning with a 22 second dominant swell period. The significant wave height readings from the buoy stacked to over 24 feet that afternoon, around the time this video was taken. Enjoy..

PBS Hawaii - HIKI NŌ Episode 703 | Aiea High School | Ha'aha'a | Full Program
Premiere Airdate: October 29, 2015
This episode is the third in a series of six shows in which each episode focuses on a specific Hawaiian value. The Hawaiian value for this show is ha’aha’a, which means humbleness and humility. Each of the following stories reflects this theme:
The top story comes from the students at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School on Kauai. They feature a Kauai resident named Moses Hamilton who learned humbleness and humility when he had to start all over again after a tragic car accident that left him a quadraplegic. While undergoing re-hab, Moses took up mouth painting (painting by holding and manipulating the paint brush in one’s mouth), and is a now a successful artist who sells his paintings at a shopping mall in Hanalei, Kauai.
Also featured are student-created stories from the following schools:
Ka Waihona o Ka Naauao (Oahu): Uncle George, a native Hawaiian stand-up paddle board instructor in West Oahu, exemplifies humbleness by giving away something of great value – paddle board lessons – for free.
Roosevelt High School (Oahu): A Roosevelt High School student uses his experience growing up in poverty-stricken countries to instill a sense of humility in his fellow students.
Lahaina Intermediate School (Maui): A retiree-turned-elementary-school crossing guard proves that a humbleness of spirit comes in handy when dedicating your life to the safety of young children in your community.
Mililani Middle School (Oahu): After years in the spotlight as star quarterback for the UH football team, Garrett Gabriel choses the much more humble profession of counseling.
Iolani School (Oahu): The value of ha’aha’a, or humbleness, teaches us that we are neither indestructible nor immortal. This realization may have saved the life of a coach at Iolani School.
Waianae High School (Oahu): This story explores how a family in West Oahu deals with a very humbling experience: the onset of dementia in the family matriarch.
This episode is hosted by Aiea High School in Honolulu.
