Diving the SS Stavronikita Wreck in Barbados with West Side Scuba Centre
Very impressive deep dive to the huge prop, but this whole 365 foot WWII vintage Greek Freighter gutted by fire and then sunk deliberately in 1978 after the salvage bill went unpaid is loaded with life in particular the two masts that rise to within 25 feet. Note use of wide angle lens means everything is in fact bigger than it appears.

SS Stavronikita Wreck, Barbados
SS Stavronikita
The SS Stavronikita is the wreck of a 365ft Greek freighter which ran in to trouble off the coast of Barbados in 1976. The ship caught fire and was severely damaged. It was towed into the port of Bridgetown where she sat for almost two years.
In 1978 The Greek Government disowned her, so the Barbados government decided to deploy the ship as an artificial reef in the calm tranquil waters of the west coast, just off of Fitts Village in the Parish of St James. The shipwreck lies bolt upright with her bow facing East and the prop is at 40m/130ft. The top of the mast is at 6m/20ft. The house and main deck are to be found at 24m/80ft. The huge forward and aft cargo holds, and the cabins, stairways and engine rooms can be penetrated.

West Side Scuba is located in The Boatyard, Barbados. It's an easy taxi ride from the cruise port. I made my arrangements the day I docked in Bridgetown at the tourist services desk.
Bonus Davy Jones walks the promenade at the end. Shot with a GoPro Hero4 Black with light red filter. Opening shot with a Samsung Gear360. Editing was done in PowerDirector 16.

SCUBA Diving The Strav - Barbados
The wreck of the SS Stavronikita is one of the highlights of any Scuba trip in Barbados. The wreck is very big with lots of coral and encrusting sponges. Penetration is not possible becasue of the deteriorating conditions of the structure some areas have already collasped. Barbados was a stop over for us for a couple days to dive there then onward to Sail and Dive in Bequia and the Grenadines. We had arrived right after a tropical storm that flooded the island and the dive site was quite green from the run off. The colors have been adjusted. We enjoyed diving with Peter at West Side Scuba Centre. He helped re-connect us with our battery charger for the UW lights I left at the hotel in Barbados. Next time we are in Barbados we will dive with them again.
Diving Barbados Summer 2015
During my last vacation in Barbados I realized beautiful scuba dives and I documented everything with my new GoPro.
After a quick installation I can finally post them here.
A sincere thanks to the staff of the West Side Scuba Center and a greeting to Mauro from Bergamo.

SS Stavronikita (the Stav) - Wreck Diving Barbados
In 1976, a 365ft Greek freighter was burnt severely off the coast of Barbados. It was towed back to Bridgetown, where it stayed for about 2 years.
In 1978, the Stav was bought over by the Government of Barbados and deliberately sunk just off Fitts Village, St. James for the sole purpose of creating an artificial reef. This artificial reef is now home to a great number of fish and coral alike. The Stavronikita rests in 120ft of water and is said to be one of the best wreck dives the island has to offer.
