Traditions
By Paul King
Marvin Wotring began making rifles in 1974 while he had his leg in a cast to keep himself occupied. Thirty-seven years later and he's handmade 879 different guns and still going. This includes the mountain rifle the WVU Mountaineer mascot uses each season. Since 1976, Wotring has worked with all the mascots to build the rifle that is fired at West Virginia University sporting events.
They are a bunch of really fine people that I enjoy working with, Wotring said. It's great to see them, a lot of them will call me when they're in town and stop by.
On average it takes him close to 100 hours of work to complete each gun, all made from West Virginia hardwood in his shop in Morgantown, WV. He sells his guns and parts locally and has even shipped them across the United States as far as Alaska and North Dakota. Wotring also shares his experience and helps others looking to building their own guns.
I think anybody could do it if they set their mind to it, Wotring said.
The flintlock and percussion rifles Wotring builds are used in national shooting competitions and sold to the general public. His guns have become such a hot commodity that he's backed up for nearly three years on orders. He averages close to 20 or 30 rifles each year and donates a rifle or two annually to the WVU rifle team to help raise money for their season. He stays true to his hobby for one reason, I do it to keep the shooting sport going, Watkins said.
