A visit to the Westbroekpark in The Hague, The Netherlands
It was quite late in the year that I went to the Westbroekpark, so I kinda missed out on the beautiful colours of the plants, trees and flowers. Luckily a lot of roses were still in bloom.

HOLLAND: Rosarium Westbroekpark - Den Haag
HOLLAND: Westbroekpark - Den Haag

HOLLAND: Scheveningen boulevard 2009 - The Hague
Scheveningen is a modern seaside resort in The Hague (Netherlands) with a long sandy beach, an esplanade, a pier (2:45), and a lighthouse.
Night life centers on the movie and musical theaters, and seafront boulevard with its bars, restaurants, gambling and arcade hall.
Work on renewing the boulevard began end 2009, an operation that will last 2-3 years. Scheveningen seafront will be given a complete makeover by giving such buildings as the Kurhaus, the Palace Promenade complex and Sealife a more open character.
History: in 1818, Jacob Pronk constructed a wooden building on a dune near the sea, from where people could bathe from four separate rooms. It marked the start of Scheveningen as a bathing resort. Since then, Scheveningen has attracted numerous tourists from all over Europe. The pier was completed in 1961.
Filmed on May 31, 2009. This is my first longer video. The panoramic shots were filmed on a tripod which did not rotate as smoothly as I hoped.

About the Westbroekpark and Rosarium: The Westbroek Park is one of Europe's most beautiful parks. This 20 ha. English-like park built in the twenties, to a design by Peter Westbroek. To mark the 50th jubilee of Queen Wilhelmina in 1948, the park was decorated by the Dutch growers of trees and shrubs for this jubilee exposition.
The Rosarium was realized in 1961 and that is were the Westbroek Park owes its international fame. From June to November, the 20,000 roses bloom here in 300 varieties! Rose growers from around the world send their latest annual plant varieties to the Westbroek Park, where they are planted in the experimental garden. Here they grow for two years to test them against our changeable climate.
Every year in July the International Rose Competition takes place. For this event rose growers from around the world come to Westbroek Park. An expert panel completed by a lay jury judge the roses on their quality. The winner receives, in the presence of many dignitaries, the Golden Rose of The Hague City. In Westbroek Park you can also admire an exhibition of 1000 Dutch species of perennials. The Westbroek Park is therefor the most beautiful front yard of a royal city!

HOLLAND: Clingendael - park in The Hague [HD]
Clingendael is a big park /estate situated between The Hague and Wassenaar.
In 1818 the Van Brienen family became the exclusive owner of Clingendael. The name 'Clingendael' means 'valley in the dunes'.
The Clingendael estate still offers a true glimpse of the past. The vast, inclining lawns, the clumps of trees and the unique water features are typical of the garden art of this time period.
In 1954 the estate became the property of the city of The Hague who opened it to the public. The Dutch and Japanese Gardens are a precious part of the estate.
The Dutch Garden in Clingendael (6:49) was created around 1915. It was designed by duchess Marguerite Van Brienen (1871-1939). Her regular contact with British aristocracy influenced her and her design was based on the typical British 'Dutch Garden'. This type of garden consisted of a geometrical pattern of flower filled box hedges, complemented by nicely shaped shrubbery. The terrace steps were created in 1887. The Dutch Garden was restored in 2009.
For information about the Japanese Garden in Clingendael, created early 2Oth century, see my other video.
On the estate is located Huys Clingendael (1:42), a building built between 1643 and 1660 for Philip Doublet, whose family had moved to The Hague from the south of the Netherlands.
Since 1983, the Clingendael Institute (the Netherlands Institute of International Relations) has been located in Huys Clingendael. Clingendael acts as a think-tank as well as a diplomatic academy in order to identify and analyze emerging political and social developments for the benefit of government and the general public.

Japanese garden in Clingendael park, The Hague (Den Haag), Netherlands
The magnificent Japanese Garden (Japanse Tuin) in Clingendael Park in The Hague is the only Japanese garden in the Netherlands from around 1910 and therefore has a high historical value. The Garden can be visited only during a short period during Spring and Autumn, due to its fragility.
