Driver's view BS 21 'Panter' at Wester Pickston Railway
After a day's play on the 7 1/4 Gauge Society's AGM Gala sunday I held up my camera for a driver's view. After depart from Geoff's Halt I needed both hands to switch gear before commencing the video. The load of logs make hard work for the engine up the 1 in 70 gradient, full throttle in second gear it still manages 12 k. When reaching the cutting I stop, to investigate a suspect rail joint which led to derailing earlier, when my train was hauled by the two River Class locos.
BS 21 'Panter' is driven by a three speed 50 cc two-stroke engine. It is my first loco, built by me in 1984. The engine is sourced from a Puch moped, drive is through an ex-DAF forward-reverse gearbox and chains to the four wheels. The exhaust is scratch built by me. It is not a scale model, the outline is based on old industrial Narrow Gauge locomotives, so minimal gauge, 12 inches to the foot. It is both a fast hauler and a versatile shunter, did many days of passenger and works train service on several tracks in Holland, mostly at SWZ in Zuiderpark The Hague and Maasoeverspoorweg Barendrecht, where it is currently based.
