Grand Junction Colorado National Monument
Grand Junction Colorado National Monument. Address: Rim Rock Drive, Fruita, CO 81521, USA
Grand Junction is about 250 miles west of Denver along the I-70, quite a drive, but there is breathtaking scenery along the way over the continental divide, and its from here you can visit the Colorado National Monument, a US National Park which is a very short distance to the south-west.
This natural wonder covers 32 square miles of sandstone rocks carved by the elements over centuries.
The stillness here is broken only by the many birds, deer, coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats, squirrels, foxes and lots more wildlife who call this place home.
The 23 mile rim rock drive which includes 3 tunnels through the rocks, one of which is 530 feet long, can be covered in just an hour, or take all day if you take advantage of the many places you can pull over off the road to explore each marked area and take a photo opportunity.
The drive is popular as a road race circuit and a road biking trail, and within the area are 14 hiking trails. Serpents Trail has 54 switchbacks within the short space of 2½ miles.
The Independence Monument stands 450 feet high in Monument Canyon, the largest free-standing rock formation in the park.
The Coke Ovens is a series of colorful rock domes sculptured by the eroding forces of the wind, water and ice over the past one and a half billion years.

A Man Worth a Thousand Words
Grand Junction, CO - There's common saying that, A picture's worth a thousand words, and in the case of Dave Davis, who was a prominent art figure within the Grand Valley, this couldn't truer. Just like the piece that stands in front of the Art Center, his memory will live on through his works.
Davis had always had a passion for art. It's what brought him to study the art of sculptures at Mesa State College.
I met Dave as a student in Mesa College when it was still a junior college in 1971. We were both students in the studios, he was studying primarily sculptures and I was in ceramics, says Terry Shepherd the Director of Ceramics at the Western Colorado Center for the Arts.
He went on to become the Executive Director of the Art Center. It was there, which is something that he may have been aware of at the time, that he started an artistic movement within the Grand Valley which would eventually lead him to create Art on the Corner, where the downtown crowd mixed with local artists.
He started Art on the Corner, for one, in 1984 and single-handedly he got that off the ground. He was the kind of person who's energy was so infectious that artists wanted to participate. There's a lot of other things that Dave did and we're really grateful for what he did for the Art Center, says Shepherd.
This downtown art movement would spread throughout the nation, something he helped pioneer as he noticed other cities taking part in, and helped local artists afford their next meal.
Art on the Corner was developed by Dave shortly after the bust back in the 80s when the oil companies left town. Anybody who lived here back then can tell you it was a terrible time, says Robbie Breaux the Board Director for the Art Center.
Pavia Justinian is one of his former pupils, but to her, Davis was one of her best friends.
Dave brought so much light and warmth, and joy to everyone he knew. He touched so many lives here in the Valley and elsewhere, and I know just seeing the reactions of people and hearing what they've had to say, his loss is huge, says Justinian.
Mr. Davis is held to the highest regard by many in the art community. Not only did he bring a thriving this art community together in the Grand Valley, he also helped many artists during struggling economic times, which are efforts that he'll be remembered for dearly.
