In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don't know my final destination or the duration of this journey.
This episode is from my last days in Egypt. Crossing the Western Desert can sometimes be problematic – there are a lot of police checks and sometimes I was even escorted into towns. There was so much to see along the way... so much ancient history, so many remarkable places. So long Egypt!
Throughout my journey, I'm raising money for a young disabled child in Poland named Franek. Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. Siwa Oasia, Western Desert, Egypt
Siwa is the most remote oasis in the Western Desert of Egypt, some 300km from the coast on its own desert road. Famous in antiquity for being the home of the Oracle of Amun, it was visited by Alexander the Great who took his symbol of the Ram from its predictions of his own immortality.
Today it still has the Oracle temple, ruined on a small rock outcrop, as well as several other classical remains and a necropolis of tombs.
The remains of the Berber city are still at the heart of the modern oasis, surrounded by the date and olive groves, and the vast salt lakes that look so out of place in the arid desert and sand sea.
The inhabitants are of berber descent, maintaining their own culture in traditions and dress.
The landscapes are harsh but breath-taking.

Cairo is located on the banks and islands of the Nile River in the north of Egypt.
West of Giza, in the desert, are three large pyramids, including the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Approximately 18 km to the south of modern Cairo is the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis and adjoining necropolis of Saqqara.
The Western Desert covers about 700,000 square kilometers (equivalent in size to Texas) and accounts for about two-thirds of Egypt's land area. This immense desert to the west of the Nile spans the area from the Mediterranean Sea south to the Sudanese border.
The Sinai Peninsula lies between the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the south, forming a land bridge from Africa to Southwest Asia. Its area is about 60.000 km².
The Sinai is a magical and biblical desert with as highlights Mount Sinai, where Moses got the ten commands and the Saint Catherine's Monastery with the chapel of the burning bush.

The White Desert of Egypt is located 45 km (28 mi) north of the town of Farafra. Most visitors to Farafra Oasis go there to see the White Desert, el-Sahara el-Beida, the area to the north-east of Qasr el-Farafra which is renowned for its spectacular scenery.
