EGYPT: Nile Cruise & Ancient Monuments (Luxor, Aswan, Giza)
Impression of Egypt along the Nile. More videos of the 7-day Nile Cruise:
Egyptian civilization have depended on the river Nile since ancient times. Most of the population and cities of Egypt lie along the Nile valley north of Aswan. Silt deposits from the Nile made the surrounding land fertile because the river overflowed its banks annually. The Ancient Egyptians cultivated and traded wheat, flax, papyrus and other crops around the Nile. The Nile was also a convenient and efficient means of transportation for people and goods. Nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along river banks.
The Nile was an important part of ancient Egyptian spiritual life and considered to be a causeway from life to death and the afterlife. The east was thought of as a place of birth and growth, and the west was considered the place of death. Thus, all tombs were west of the Nile, because the Egyptians believed that in order to enter the afterlife, they had to be buried on the side that symbolized death.

For more detailed information about each monument see the description of each individual video. Except for:
The Colossi of Memnon (51:16) are two massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned in Egypt during the Dynasty XVIII. For the past 3,400 years (since 1350 BC), they have stood in the Theban Necropolis, located west of the River Nile from the modern city of Luxor. Two shorter figures are carved into the front throne alongside his legs: these are his wife Tiye and mother Mutemwiya. The side panels depict the Nile god Hapy.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (55:30), known commonly as the Egyptian Museum, in Cairo-Egypt, is home to an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. It has 120,000 items, with a representative amount on display, the remainder in storerooms. It houses the world's largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities.
Part of the collection will be moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum set to open in 2020. It will house Tutankhamun's complete collection of between 4000 and 5000 artefacts, many of which are undergoing restoration and have never been displayed; the vast collection we have viewed at the old museum represents only about a third of the whole. The Grand Egyptian Museum is located on 50 hectares at Giza, two kilometres from the Grand Pyramids. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo will remain open.

Camping in The Valley of the Whales El Wadi Hitan, Egypt
One night of camping in the Valley of the Whales, El Wadi Hitan, was ahead of us. Stops along the way to pick up dinner and breakfast makings. Rice, potatoes, tomatoes, and a live chicken that only had a few more hours to cluck.
The Egyptian Desert is cold during the winter months - a vast understatement. The Park Reserve staff took pity on us and let us sleep inside their souvenir shop. The wind was whipping up a small sandstorm as we set off on a walk to see the 40 million year old fossils of whales (video will appear tomorrow).
A Fennec Fox appeared at our dinner to investigate his possible dinner and, you must admit, a night sleeping in the desert did nothing for my appearance.
Camping in The White Desert, Egypt
Driving through the eerie, white chalk formations during the day isn't the same as actually camping among them for one night. There are no designated camping spots. Each tour operator picks whatever spot they want, hunkers down a distance from each other and I could see campfires glowing in the distance throughout the night.
The big highlight was a little Fennec Fox, Desert Fox, that visited our campsite when it smelled chicken being barbecued. So cute with big ears and eyes. We put out a plate of food for it to take back to its den and, sure enough, the food was gone by morning.

Underground Nazi lair reopens in Egypt
(11 Sep 2017) LEADIN:
After a 7-year renovation plan, the Rommel Cave Museum in Marsa Matrouh (450 kilometres north of Cairo) has finally been reopened.
STORYLINE:
This stretch of beach west of Alexandria has a special place in modern history.
Beneath the sand is a cave, once inhabited by a Nazi general.
These visitors are about to wend their way downwards into the former den of the Desert Fox himself, Erwin Rommel.
This cave was used by Rommel as his headquarters while conducting the North African campaign during World War II.
Rommel was nicknamed the Desert Fox for his surprise attacks and string of successful campaigns.
A fortnight ago, Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities and the Matrouh governorate reopened the Rommel Cave Museum after seven years of closure, following a restoration costing 2.5 million Egyptian Pounds (141,660 US Dollars).
The cave hosts the personal belongings of the German leader such as his his military suit and pistols.
During World War II, Rommel led troops in France and Italy. But the military tactician won his fame and his nickname commanding the Afrika Korps. He arrived in northern Africa in 1941 to help Italian troops fight the British.
Ahmed Al-massry, a history researcher, explains he was:
A German leader sent from Adolf Hitler in co-operation with Mussolini, who ruled Italy and occupied Libya, during the Second World War, to occupy Egypt which was under British occupation through Libya. At that time the British army moved from Alexandria and they met at El Alamein in a battle that ended with the victory f the Allied countries over the countries of the Axis.
He defeated the British at Gazala in May 1942, followed by his taking of Tobruk and promotion to Field Marshal. When the German troops entered El-Alamein, a town in the northern Matrouh governorate, Rommel selected a site in the area's cliffs as his headquarters, where he plotted military operations against the British forces.
Ever cunning, Rommel attached airplane propellers on trucks and ordered them to rumble about to create dust and simulate an assault in one area while he attacked another. Battling searing temperatures, insects and sand storms, he repeatedly outmanoeuvred his opponents, but eventually was overcome.
If Rommel had won in El Alamein over Montgomery (British Leader) it would have changed the history of the world, as it means that Rommel would occupy Egypt. But his defeat here in that area put the world on its current status, explains one visitor, Khaled Al-massry.
Rommel lost his command when he told Adolf Hitler that it was useless to continue the war. In July 1944, he was implicated in a plot to kill Hitler.
He was given a choice between committing suicide, in return for the preservation of his reputation and a promise his family wouldn't be persecuted, or facing trial, which would end in his disgrace and execution. He chose the former and took a cyanide pill.

旅する鈴木558:On the way to Aswan@Egypt
DAY 558 : TO ASWAN
There are so much to see in Egypt. The pyramids in Giza, the northern mediterranean city of Alexandria, the eastern beach towns along the Red Sea, the western archeological spots inside Sahara dessert along the Niles and so forth. I had a strong feeling it will send us back to Japan if we visit them all, so we decided to go alongside the Niles. The train to Aswan run along the Niles all the way through the dessert. Trees grow and people have lives only along the riverside surrounded by nothing but dessert. It looked kind of strange to me while I was watching through the train window. From the ancient times to the present, the Niles has been inevitable to human lives.
