Western Gailes Golf Club, Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland
Western Gailes Golf Club, Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland - Located in North Ayrshire about 10 minutes from Troon, Western Gailes is considered by many as the hidden gem of Scottish links. Dating back to 1897, the club provides a combination of the traditional and modern style links. Contours of the land coupled with severely placed bunkers make it a fair but challenging links. Relying on natural defenses created by the sand dunes and wind, Western Gailes runs in a loop with its toughest stretch along the banks of the dunes that generally plays into the prevailing wind. It comes as no surprise that professional and amateur golfers alike continue to travel from all corners of the world to play this enjoyable links course.
Western Gailes has hosted many notable tournaments over the years which include serving as a final qualifying venue of The Open at Royal Troon and Turnberry, along with the Curtis Cup and eight Scottish Amateur Championships. In addition to the course, the Clubhouse is reason for a visit as it sits above the links with views across the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran, Ailsa Craig and beyond…making Western Gailes an experience you’ll never forget.

Royal Troon Golf Club, Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland
Royal Troon Golf Club, Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland - Host of the 145th British Open in 2016, first hosted the Open in 1923. Found five miles north of Prestwick on Scotland’s west coast, the club was founded in 1878. In 1978 it was the last club in Great Britain to be granted Royal status. It’s a traditional out and back links layout opening with a relatively relaxing series of short par fours along the Firth of Clyde where a clear day will reveal Ailsa Craig to the south and majestic mountains on the Isle of Arran to the west. Good rounds are typically born on the outbound loop as the prevailing north-westerly wind can make the return extremely difficult. Troon lays claim to both the longest and the shortest holes in Open Championship golf – the “Postage Stamp” No. 8 at 123 yards and “Turnberry” No. 6 at 601 yards. Impressive history was made in the 1973 Open when Gene Sarazen at the age of 71 aced No. 8 then holed his sand shot the following day for a 2! It was quite a conclusion to The Squire’s Open career given he had played in Troon’s inaugural championship in 1923.

Machrihanish Golf Club, Campbeltown, Scotland
Machrihanish Golf Club, Campbeltown, Scotland - Machrihanish Golf Club is located in Argyll, Scotland, on the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre between the Isle of Arran and the Hebrides. The club was formed in 1876 with ten holes. In 1879, it was “re established” when Old Tom Morris expanded it to eighteen holes including the famous first where your opening tee shot must carry across a corner of the Atlantic Ocean! The 6,462 yard par 70 plays fast and firm through larger than normal Scottish dunes to greens some like punchbowls, some like plateaus. Otherwise, Machrihanish is one of the most natural links in the game. Its fairways pitch and roll, the views it offers are striking. The only less than loving reflection you'd ever hear about this consistently ranked world top 100 course is its location on the Mull of Kintyre. The choices used to be a 3 hour road trip (from heaven, the scenery is spectacular the entire way) or a 40 minute flight. Now there's a third travel option and it is the ticket. The Kintyre Express is a speed boat ferry that crosses the Firth of Clyde with 12 passengers in just over an hour. This exposed links course is one of the finest hidden gems in the British Isles and should not be overlooked on your next trip to Scotland.
